I bought a used, extremely low mileage FWD Volvo 2020 T5 S60. I am completely pleased with it. It is loaded with options that if buying this from new I would have never selected. I have owned Volvos for many years and consider this to be a beautiful styled car. This was to replace my last 2007 S60 that got totalled by a high speed red light runner. I did not receive any injuries and that is what I consider true Volvo performance!

Great numbers but car and driver tested the BMW M340i and got a 3.7 seconds to 60 and 33MPG.

@@kamilb8232 car and driver got 41mpg doing the same 75 mph test on the S60 T6 (the one that the M340i got 33 in). So the Volvo still beats it by 8mpg AND can run almost 25 miles on pure battery. If you have a bunch of shorter trips you can never even use gas.

I own this car. I use it as a commuter and only used two tanks of gas in my first 7 months of ownership since I mainly use it for my 13 mile commute (26 mile round trip). In the warmer months I get truly about 45 miles on battery. In cold months about 33. I finally took a 1800 mile road trip and used it to look at average gas milage and found myself getting about 35 mpg at 72 mph, and on back roads averaging 60 mph with hills and corners about 40-41 mpg. Definitely not a sports car but handles well and when pushed can get to 80 in a heartbeat so no issues with merging or passing when needed.

I've currently got a base 2022 S60 B5 (mild hybrid). I have been blown away from the fuel economy. If I'm in Eco mode and try to be efficient, I average around 38mpg on my work commute. I've gotten that as high as 46mpg! But conditions and traffic have to be just right.

I love that you did this Volvo review - I just leased a 2023 Volvo XC60 B5 Ultimate and I couldn't be happier for the money I'm paying for it and what I receive from the vehicle. Yes the B6 varient would've been nice for the plug-in nature, but it wasn't ultimately needed. Can't wait to see you do a review on the XC60, and hopefully in my configuration/version.

Here's the deal. I owned Volvos since 1976, I also had a 760 Turbo that I totaled and walked home not one scratch. I buy Volvos as the Family cvar and my Wife drives it 80% of the time. My car since 1966 had been the Chevy Corvette. I have never wrecked a Vette. Our latest Volvo is a 2018 S60 T5 AWD Polestar. We both love the car, the feel, the pep and mileage. We know we are safe and with AWD rain or snow is not a deal.. We also want to support the environment, but I do not want to be worried about finding a charger. I find this Hybrid is perfect for 90% or our driving on Battery. Then If we need to go somewhere to see her family in New York or my family in Illinois we would not hesitate with either our current Volvo or the T8 S60. What I wish I could get is a Volvo capable Drive train in my Corvette. The new E Ray Hybrid Corvette costs $105,000 base model and does not use the Electric Motor for Economy. I really want the T8 tech applied to my Corvette. But you know 455 HP is not too shabby, When i drive the 2018 i do use Sport Mode and the cars does feel more sporty than it should. I think we would argue over who turn it was to drive the S60 T8. Not even considering Bimmer, Mercedes, or anything else. Volvo S60 T8 is a great transition to the future. When in Hybrid Max Mileage mode you get 74 MPG with a full charge. That feels great. Dennis

Why do we constantly have to hear about China in the comment section? This is getting old. Volvo is Scandinavian and operates out of Gothenburg with the financial backing of its Chinese parent company. But directly Volvo is a Swedish operation and spends a lot of time making their cars reflect Scandinavian design and content in the form of materials choices, sustainability concerns from the choices of materials and carbon footprints in manufacturing to the recycling of materials at the car's end of life, safety content that draws upon and expands Volvo's heritage in safety design, and their vision in how they move the company forward. So saying they're "Chinese" because of their parent company is a stretch. I don't agree that Volvo's look like scaled versions of each other. The s60 and S90 have different profiles, glass greenhouses and shapes (while being distinctly Volvos). The XC40, XC60 and XC90 aren't really the same either in profile. Inside, they're similar, but not the same. By contrast, Mercedes C, E, and S are far more scaled versions of each other than Volvo's two sedans are though Mercedes SUVs may also differ. The s60 is a nice vehicle and I wish I saw more of them on the road vs. Volvo's crossovers. The refinement and performance are excellent. However, this is Volvo's now "last generation." A new Volvo design is coming as seen in the EX90 and EX30. Problem is, these are BEV only. That's where Volvo is going. Thanks for your usual excellent and thorough presentation.

I might get hate from this: I am one that's not interested in Volvo gasoline car, their inline-5 legendary era is long gone. But their EX90, or the $40k and 0-60mph in sub-4 seconds EX30, plus those Zeekr and Polestars are much more interesting.

Zeekr isn't part of Volvo. Of course, Polestar is very related. Zeekr shares a platform but they don't overlap in development and personnel. Polestsar did base their 4 on the Zeekr001, however. I'm interested in the next-gen Volvos as well but still like the Volvo sedans over the crossovers and look forward to the next-gen sedan.

The S60 PHEV remains as a top contender to replace my current PHEV for the reasons you cited. Being able to knock out my daily commute on electrons AND having the gasoline option for long road trips. The only downside is my current PHEV gets about 50 m.p.g. between full fill of the gas tank about every two weeks which is better than the 30-ish m.p.g. you said you were getting with the S60.

Question about the charge function while driving. Lets say I drive 30 miles to get to the highway using only battery power. Then when getting onto the highway i put it into charge mode and go for a 6hr highway drive. Will it automatically go to hybrid mode after battery is full during this highway trip? Or do i have ro do it manually?

Thank you for this informative and interesting review (as always). If I should choose, it would be the V60 for it's practicality. I'm thinking right now of leaving my Lexus IS for the V60 plug-in. If you want practicality but not an SUV, there are not many options in this configuration. That is why I haven't considered the plug-in version of the Lexus NX and also because it is way more expensive, at least in Europe. There is the BMW 3 series, but it is less practical (smaller cargo capacity, less room in the back) and the EV range is much lower. So the V60 (or S60 to a certain extent) is an all rounder and therefore the winner. And by the way, if Lexus marketing people are reading this, please stop making only SUV's. We lost the IS in Europe and the ES is too big for most European cities. And you lost and will continue to loos some long term clients...

Life long Volvo driver here. I’ve owned a bunch. I cannot conceive owning a Volvo this complex. You will have engine lights and dealership visits until you are nauseous. They just can’t get reliability down on these flagships. For me I wouldn’t trust more than a base B5 setup in a S60, V60 or XC60.

No, it’s only RWD when it’s in pure EV mode. In hybrid mode the front genertator can generate power and it can deliver up to 155HP on the rear axle for the 2024/2025 model year cars, ~90HP for the ones prior

@@spinedoc893 Replying to an old question. But with the Volvo PHEVs generally you can put the car into "Constant AWD" mode which will always but some power to the front and rear wheels. It will basically always send some power to keep the battery charged so that the rear wheels will always have power and the battery will never drain in that mode.

To say that I was disappointed in my 2021 leased S60 would be an understatement. My car was equipped with a 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive, and the premium package. The classy interior is gorgeous along with the exterior design, fit and finish were top-rate. Unfortunately, the driving dynamics were horrible, the ride, shockingly harsh, and unbecoming of a sporty/ luxury ride, the steering was numb and the car liked to wander on the HWY, the engine sounded awful, and The OEM Pirellis on the optional 19" was hard and incredibly noisy, all in all, an uninspiring, and boring driving machine. The car had exhibited a chassis vibration at HWY speeds from day one that technicians at Weston Volvo in Fort Lauderdale could not remedy, new tires were also no help. The car also would not start occasionally for no obvious reason, this issue got progressively worse, and again Volvo could not figure out the issue. All of this as well as 3 sets of Brake rotors within 26000 miles! as they would warp in just a few thousand miles. No wonder Volvo is dead last in JD power rankings in every category. My first and sadly my last Volvo. The replacement 2023 Alfa Romeo Jiulia although cannot yet be judged for reliability, is the antithesis to the staid Volvo in the joy of the driving department.

honda civic is big yet lighter etc, they shouldve made car small and in exchange, safer in crash , maybe like volvo, but for cheaper. the other thing volvo is nice for is twin charged electric assited turbo , which at least theretically, could keep emissions down to the point where it doesnt really help to lower them any furthur. they give option for very fancy quality sound system, its quiet enough inside. i think honda can do it, just in a smaller car at least, and that would be more meaningful anyway

My current 4runner is 24 years old and has 222k on it. I'm terrified it will break soon. Hearing other people's Nissans, BMWs, VWs, Stellantis cars and Fords breaking with under 100k and being less than 10 years old is a big nope for me. I could never justify the risk.

Head restraints: Volvo needs to come up with some adjustability. Perhaps it could involve access to the restraint or seat back while stopped, to allow a new fixed position. This would be different from the usual clicking mechanism that allows adjustment at any time while seated. I traded my 1998 V70R AWD after a year because my 5'2" tall wife could never get comfortable with the head restraint. Otherwise a wonderful car.

My '23 S60 PHEV since Nov, through the Pa. winter, 7500 miles, has achieved 95mpg. ~45% of those miles were trips of 170 miles or more. (My last BMW 4 cyl ICE got 29.7 driven the same way.) It is plugged in level 1every night (charging cost ~$1.20 per day @ .18kWh). Critical information for longer trips: Enter the trip or round trip in navigation and the battery will be apportioned over the entire trip!

The fact that you have "a mechanic" is why you deserve that to begin with. Have your car serviced and maintained by the dealer service network as the manufacturer recommends. I don't know why americans make such a fuss about maintaining cars and just refuse to do what the damn car manufacturer recommends, and then you wonder why your cars break down all the time. And what do you do when they break down because you didn't maintain them in the first place??? You take them to some random mechanic who has no clue what they're doing, haven't had any training or experience on your super modern and complex car, and then wonder why they don't know how to fix your car or keep it running.

I agree with most everything you said except one thing… I get VERY good fuel economy on my M340i XDrive… and I drive quite “spirited” on my daily commute. Since new I’m averaging 31.2mpg and that’s over 32,000 miles with plenty of time spent idling. My commute to work is 26 miles one way and only half of it is freeway. I average about 33-36mpg on the commute to work… and it was actually about 10% better with the factory Pirelli Cinturato A/S runflats. I have since swapped the tires for Michelin Pilot Sport A/S for more grip and comfort.

Right? It looks midsize to me. But the industry has changed its view of a vehicles scale and dimensions. Cars that were compact are now midsized. Midsized cars are now being called full-sized. Look at the Honda Civic. The thing is huge now but I'm sure they're still calling it compact. Nissan was calling the Maxima a full-sized vehicle. Full-sized vehicles to me in this day and age are mostly luxury brands. Does GM still sell the Impala? That's a full-sized vehicle off the top of my head. I guess the 300C/Charger too but I'd consider them mid.

I always ask the same about US cars, considered everyone seem to think 80 mph is very quick and never drive any faster, so why do you need 600-700hp? Meanwhile in Germany people travel comfortably at 200+ km/h in cars with less than 200hp.

I still wish they made the smaller subcompact Volvos. Especially with gas prices now. Truth is, I don't think they are Swedish owned at all anymore so I wouldn't buy a Chinese car.

hybrid reduces emissions more than ev, it uses the worlds limited batttery supply, to reduce emissions where they happen most across all cars throught the rest of human existence, which is in low speed high torque ( stop and go traffic) without being heavy (which is less crash safe espcially for others in crash, and weight also worsens normal wear damage to road which cost emissions etc to fix). a small but essential part of the battery cannot be recycled after short lifetime due to high energy flow into and out of battery causing normal dendrite forming battery wear damage, this is why aftermarket electric cars go down in value as much as they do. see volvo study on how it suppsoedly takes more emissiosn to make electric car, motors arnt recyclable . mahle says its working on recyclable electric motor. its best to have small combustion charge battery size somewhat closer to optimal size for longveity , because more battery is exponentially more energy wasted which worsens longveity, ebcause yoru nto using all thee energy all that long range ev big battery mass carries, and current ev tech is much heavier per amoiunt fo energy vs combustion. sir joseph center enegry and others are working on converting linear combustion energy to elctric drive , and maybe assited by hydrallic drive. bio fuels, hydrogen , e fuels, propane etc are all more sustainable tech than relying more on electric battery car, so only use enough battery to reduce emisions to a resonable amount for the sake of human health etc. it will more much easier to own too, cheaper, lightweight driving fun more similar to lotus elise mid rear engine weigth distrubution(for saftey and being abel to preserve momentum around turns, which is more effceint than regenrative braking), manual steering, a car structure that can give you precise feel of how car is moving , rear wheel drive (less regenerative braking , so more longveity of battery) etc.

lectric car batteries of today and the past have not and will probably not be recycled if they arnt freshly dead when 100 percent full mass recycling that is also not too chemically toxic, becomes a real thing.... the batteries end up rusting and short circuiting at landfills.
