I actually bought a Q8 e-tron, it is a great car, no complaints, and from the outside it looks very good, away from EV usual styling. Just a comment, I have found EV manufacturers have a tendancy to hide the true weight of their cars, i weighted my Q8 e-tron, it weights 6’000 lbs (no passengers, no cargo). it is a heavy car, but like most EVs in this range. Do not go by the manufacturers weight indication. Air suspension in these heavy EVs is a must to cope with the extra weight.

great review as always. just to chime in on your question about motor whine. I am an owner of one of these with 7000Km so far. - the motor whine is artificial, for pedestrian safety. I agree with you that it is very loud and the most noticeable noise coming into the cabin. you can actually disable it by removing a fuse on the passenger footwell. - with respect to efficiency: I have noticed a very interesting pattern. Q8 etron is more efficient on the highway than city (provided that one stays below the speed limit). my average for highway is around 18-19 kwh/100km for highway vs 22-23kw/100km for city driving. the only explanation that I can think of is that on the highway, and in efficiency mode, the car disengages the front motor, hence better efficiency. - wheel size seems to play an important role in efficiency. I have the 20" wheels as opposed to all the press cars you folks get which is 21", and I see a big discrepancy between my numbers and what bloggers/youtubers report.
@jeffy2107 ай бұрын
Couple notes as I owned both a 2021 e-tron and now a 2024 Q8 e-tron: - every person I've had in the car loves the sound of the "motor" sound, they say it sounds "futuristic" and I love it too - The Q8 is more efficient than the previous generation. I used to get 2.4 - 2.7 mi/kw and now i average 2.7 - 3.0 mi/kw, which explains why they only increased the battery by about 15-20% but range went up almost 30%. It feels like it's related to rolling resistance and aero - In terms of wheels, larger wheels equal larger linear velocity but equal radial velocity. That means that the motor spins at the same speed but you'll go faster/farther so having larger wheels will help there.

Alex and I find ourselves in disagreement on this issue but I think the best solution is to have both options available. Full 1 pedal driving mode and full coast as an option as well. It's down to software (except for manufacturers like Tesla or Rivian who don't have blended braking). -Travis

Thanks for a thorough review and comparisons. I took delivery of a Q8 10 days ago. I liked the fairly low price, and that is has 30 miles more range than the base Merc EQE SUV. I do think the Bang & Olufsen sound system is quite good and the comfy suspension and quiet cabin are great. I would add that the regen from the paddles is stronger than on earlier e trons. With the appropriate settings it comes close to one pedal driving, which i like. IF I had unlimited funds I would have gone for the top spec BMW iX. but the Q8 is better value for my money. It's main weakness is that the MyAudi app has a very poor reputation among e tron owners. The MyBMW app is superior.

@AAutoBuyersGuide11 ай бұрын
I think you're referring to one pedal driving when you say automatic regeneration but just because the vehicle doesn't utilize one pedal driving doesn't mean it isn't using regenerative braking. It's simply a different way to utilize the same system. The mileage for this Audi isn't "less" because it doesn't have one pedal driving. -Travis

I have known what you just said to me above for years, but it is clear I did not really "understand it" until just now. Your response to me cleared up a lot of things for me. I can now see the Porsche/Audi logic much more clearly, especially the part about being able to utilize free-rolling much more easily with their brake pedal initiation of regeneration, rather than always operating in one-pedal driving mode, which would require shifting to neutral for free-wheeling (not recommended). Hi, A question… When you/they talk about range of EV cars it is with a 100% charged battery right? However, when you/they talk about charging %/time it is always up to 80%? So my question is, should you charge an EV to 80% or to 100%? If no one charges to 100%, one have 20% less range right?
@jamesinsteamboat Жыл бұрын
The charging to 80% spec is informative because it's how you charge on road trips. The charging rate slows down as you approach full charge, so you're better off leaving the charger when you hit 80% (after 31 minutes) and continuing your drive, rather than waiting several hours to hit 100%. It's also courteous to the other people waiting to charge if there is a line.
@ThinQsome Жыл бұрын
@@jamesinsteamboat Thank you for your reply! If you only charge the battery to 80%, than you have to charge it more often so your argument about beeing courteus to others can’t apply?! And why is it that the charging rate slows down after 80%? I would like Alex to do an episode on EV batteries please! About: - Charging time (hurdles) - How many times can you charge a battery? - How many miles does a battery last? - What happens to the car when you can’t charge it enough any longer? - What will eventually happen to the battery? - Second hand value of an used EV (5 - 10 years). It must depreciate quite a lot and quite quickly since you can’t change the battery? Probably many more aspects to consider, both moneywise and environmental wise…
@storresfalcon Жыл бұрын
Charging times depends on the power of the fast charger. Level 2 are the ones you install at your garage or what you find at hotels and some convenience stores. They are proper way to charge most of the time to get your battery last and they need 8-10 hours to fully recharge a battery from 0% to full. There is no limit number of charges to the battery, it will degrade slowly and you'll get less miles with 100%. The Teslas model S that have been on the market since 2014 still run Al keep charging to 100%. With about 20% fast level 3 charging (the one you do on the road with 30-40 min from 10 to 80%) and the rest at level 2 you can reasonably expect about 90% of the original range after 150k and more than 80% at 250k miles. If you want to replace your battery, it will be at a dealership and those materials in the old one are quite valuable and they are starting to be recycled to produce new ones.
@ThinQsome Жыл бұрын
@@storresfalcon Thank you!
@holmiumh Жыл бұрын
@@ThinQsome I think the critical information you are looking for is the fact that a properly engineered EV should only allow maximum charging speed when the battery is somewhere between 20%~80% state of charge (SOC) It's somewhat like how humans eat, when you are hungry for 24hrs (0% charge), you probably should start eating gently to get the digestive system to start working and you get to check if the system is still healthy, and then up to a point (20% SOC) you can eat as fast as you can, but at some point when you are about to get full (80% SOC), you need to slow down again. And the consumers always like want big numbers to compare, so the car makers give you the biggest numbers, which is 20%-80% charge speed/time And if you are on a road trip, you want to make sure you are charging at the maximum speed so the charge time is reduced to minimum, that means you try to stay between 20%~80% SOC.

@ALMX5DP Жыл бұрын
I think the laws here require a certain amount of light surface area on the initial illumination. Mustang and Corvette have initial elements that are large enough where the first illumination is enough, whereas here the small progressive strip does not light up enough. This is why Lexus or some others have progressive decreasing lighting elements to get around the additional solid light that Audi uses here.
