The 2015 Mercedes C-Class has received a complete redesign that changes the "baby-Benz" from class average to a class by-itself. As I discuss in the video, much of the change for this generation is down to the 2014 Mercedes CLA250 ( • 2014 /2015 Mercedes B... ) taking over the role of "the cheapest Mercedes in America". By adding the CLA to the line-up, the base C-Class no longer has to compete with the Audi A3, BMW 320i, Lexus CT, etc for entry level sales. Thanks to this rework of the Mercedes price ladder, the C300 is able to boast the most interior refinement of any vehicle in the class, more standard features and more power as well.

I still prefer the luxury trim, particularly on the C. The grill is wider and more pronounced, giving it extra character.

Hum, I was trying to call you old, I was not trying to be arrogant. the luxury grill is the "Classic" grill harking back to merc's of old...young people don't want their car to look like an "old mercedes" Who brought up boy racers? Bob Hope Now that is untrue. I'm 18 years old, so I could be considered young. I'm considering the MB C300 with the Luxury Package. Not due to heritage or anything like that, but it seems as if it demands respect with the hood ornament, reflects class and sends a message to those who look at it. I suppose he brought up 'boy racers' because the moment a 17-20 year old male hears the word 'Sport' in the name of the car he is considering to buy, he immediately thinks of burnouts, lots of low-end torque and the growl that a V8 makes when you slam the accelerator. I can vouch for this thought due to the fact that most of the male peers I have are just uneducated in the field of automotive engineering. Just because something says 'Sport' or, in this case, 'Sport Package' does not mean it will go faster or accelerate more rapidly. All in all, Just wanted to make a point. You don't have to be old to prefer a classy look over a stylish look.

I know you rarely do, but I think you should include in your review something like a 30-40 seconds of exhaust note, for every car (I don't mean you have to rev it up to 7k rpm, I just mean this to hear the sound of the engine, since it's an important part of the car). Think about it ;)

Thanks so much for explaining the reasoning for the screen sitting on the dash instead of inside. It does make the front seating area appear roomier by making the dash less bulky. I hated it when I first saw it last year. Now it's doesn't seem such an eyesore.

Turbo lag is exactly the reason why to choose the C400 over the C300. The twin turbo charged V6 is phenomenal! I can tell you because I just bought a C400

Just had this car as a loaner.Excellent handling.Great acceleration.Very comfortable.On NYC streets shocks could be better.It is not quiet on most highways.On the NY State Thruway road noise was very loud.

The only way that you're able to get the Burmester sound system is by adding the Premium package 2 to the vehicle, which mandates leather seats. So, this car does in fact have leather seats, at least it would according to the Mercedes website.

I have a 328i and i prefer it to my friend's C300. Sure it's not as nice on the inside but it takes corners better, picks up faster, and looks better on the outside (in my opinion)

Alex, great review, what is your opinion on ride quality with those steel suspensions of Sport Pkg on the review car? Are they super stiff? Have you tried the new C300 without a sport package for ride quality comparison? Again awesome review, very very thorough.

The C300 is tuned toward the softer side of the spectrum, so the Sport package is stiffer than the standard C300 but not as stiff as the sport springs on the other sedans in the category. The suspension is slightly stiffer than the BMW 3-Series or Volvo S60 in standard form, but not as stiff as teh S60 or 3-Series with their sport packages.

Good video. I took a test drive of the BMW 328xi with the M Sport package yesterday; the car had more body roll and less steering feel than expected and the rear seat seemed accommodating for my teenager. I had not considered the C Class because the previous generation was cramped in the back and not very agile, but will take a look at the C300 now.

As you can see, I don’t keep vehicles for the long haul, just to enjoy the experience.

Eugene Neale It's all about the value. The C-Class is a great car, but the price tag is a little bit steep. Then again, I think that is good for Mercedes as a brand, but personally I tend to favor the "deal"

it's interesting to note that the Cadillac ATS was engineered after the e46 bmw 3 series. Cadillac actually bought some older 3 series and basically modeled the ats after it. this is according to the chief ats engineer. sadly all the cars are big and porky now.

Most comparison reviews concede that the ATS is now the best car to drive in the segment. That used to be BMW's specialty, but they've changed their formula and dulled down their cars. The ATS especially steers and handles much better than the 3 series, though BMW still makes the better engines.

Wolvesq With this latest wave of BMW and Cadillac models the order has reshuffled. I know I'm not the only one to say this in essence but I was one of the few that was willing to call Cadillac the new BMW. BMW is perusing higher margins and larger volumes, and that means making bigger more luxurious cars with fewer compromises. In many ways Cadillac is where BMW was in the 1990s and BMW is where Mercedes was around the same time in terms of driving dynamics and luxury amenities. With this modern Mercedes it appears that Mercedes is repositioning themselves to be a semi-step above the rest in luxury and in price.

Alex on Autos Totally agree. I just hope the market starts rewarding Cadillac soon. The rebates offered on ATS's and CTS's (even the glorious vsport) are massive compared to the competition. But I guess brand image doesn't change overnight, and in this segment, people put a premium on brand cache.

I'm always amazed at how you're able to do the work of 3 to 4 guys from Consumer Reports. How are you able to take the time and afford to do this with a day job as Editor-at-Large? I know part of it is funded by auto makers with loaners and flying you to press events, and your own car rentals. You haven't solicited for donations like some other car reviewers. But you also have organic egg farm, mountain gardening, home remodel and Jeep Commanche project. I presume your wife also pulls a decent salary as well so you can continue this "habit". I'm sure every time you do another Child Seat Review, you get another subtle hint from the Mrs...

What I don't understand is what you would call cars like the Acura ilx, Mercedes CLA, and Audi A3? I am confused about what there moniker is? I wouldn't call them Sub-Compact by no imagination but still. It intrigues me.

Too bad about the nav screen. It looks like it's glued on to the dashboard. To my taste, Mercedes has a nav-screen challenge in general. Only the S-class has a decent size, but every other mercedes uses the 7.1 inch screen. Even the E-class and the CLS class. That's way too small for such upscale medium sized cars.

I'm pretty much sold on the C300 that is somewhat loaded at around $50k-$52k (Obviously to save as much money as I can without dismissing some options) but I'm also thinking about the CLA 250 Fully loaded at around $45k, but when I mean fully loaded I mean fully loaded. So we are talking of a difference in price more of around $6k to $8k for a somewhat loaded C300. I'm leasing either car and probably putting down like $3k to $3.5k and using 15k miles per year for 36 months. I guess my question is.. is it better to have a less expensive fully loaded CLA250 than a $6K-8K more expensive somewhat loaded C300? I understand the C300 is a better car overall than the CLA250 but I wanted to hear your thoughts about it. Also do you think my lease payment is going to be very different on both cars? I mean more than $150? Thanks again for all the info.

Since Mercedes controls the lease rates, it really depends on what they are offering at the moment. Personally I would take the C300, I really think it is a much better car than the CLA, especially if you ever plan on having passengers in the rear.

No, I just liked the ride with the air suspension and I think that for just over $1,000 it's a good deal.

mountainhobo It is hard to say exactly, but the OE non-air struts are about half the price of the air struts. Estimates on longevity vary but it is not unreasonable to expect 100,000 miles out of it. I have heard of compressor failures, but I have had a few vehicles with air suspensions (both complete and partial) and so far no excessive expenses have surfaced. Of course now that I've said that....

Alex on Autos "Of course now that I've said that...." -- Knock on wood. I've heard about people converting ex air suspension to regular after failures to avoid repair costs, so I suppose there is a way out if all else fails (and on a Mercedes, it will :)).

Great review...really found it quite Informative ....how would you compare this to the BMW 328 in terms of ease of getting in and out of the car and overall seat comfort...I ask because I am trying to find a safe comfortable car for my parents who are in their 80's ...although I do not have any data on this it seems to me that the 3 sits lower to the ground and it is not as easy for ingress and egress. Also the front seats in the BMW did not seem as comfortable to me.... What do you think? Thanks very much...

The Mercedes seats are more comfortable for my body shape but not everyone has the same tastes so I would recommend spending as much time in both options as possible before making a decision.

None of this class cars are suitable for 80 y/o's to get in and out of easily. Seats sit low and you step up and out of them. Volvo has the best seats.

In performance yes, but in most other measures the C300 is the better car. The C400 is very comparable to the 335xi in performance
