There is one very important feature that you forgot to mention. If the battery in the key fob is dead, you can not only open your car with the traditional key that slides out but you can also start your car electronically. For that you have to hold your key fab close to your start button and the tiny induction field that your key fab generates is enough is then to start your car.

This also applies to Toyota & Lexus. On all other brands, the spot to hold remote may not always be the start button. It is a great idea to verify, BEFORE you are stuck at night, in the dark, in the cold. it is all in the owner's manual. Also, be sure to use the hidden key once a month, and lube the door lock with Houdini lube or Silicone spray ONLY. Otherwise lock will seize up from lack of use or hardened lubrication.

Yes, and no. If you have a power lift gate, go kneel down and look above your license plate. You'll see the backup camera, the button for manually activating the power lift. And to the far right a small black button. You can program that - before your remote dies, with a 5 digit sequence which will unlock the car even without the key or fob. Only one guy shows how to program it. I bought my '16 outback used and I can't get it to program... Thinking it was previously done...

Hi Alex, could you verify regarding that you need 3 clicks on the fob to arm the alarm. Some say that 1 click on the fob or the 3 lines on the door handle or the lock button on tailgate will activate the alarm. They said the 3 clicks is some sort of discreet vehicle finder instead of triggering the panic button. Thanks

I am new to Subaru since May 2022 with a 2018 Outback Limited and loving it. Thanks Alex for your great videos, you are clear and concise and I appreciate all your efforts to help us get the most out of our vehicles. I watched this video previously and have been clicking 3 times and have come back to find my car unlocked. I did more internet searching, and I have read the same as the comment above, so I thought it was me hitting the button too many times and unlocking it. I then tried only 1 click and I do see the flashing light on the dash, so I am thinking this is the alarm. However I am now still finding my car unlocked. When I say unlocked I mean I put my hand on the driver handle and I do not feel or hear it click to unlock. I try the handle and it's unlocked already. I do not understand why anyone would want to lock the car but not enable the alarm. If anyone has similar experience please let me know. Thanks.

So far I have gone out to the garage twice and found my lift gate up. I must have leaned against something and accidentally pressed the button. I think the key fobs would benefit greatly with a flip cover to protect the buttons from accidental activation.

Hi Alex, great video! I had something happen today with the key for the first time. I locked the car via the little strips on the handle and did some shopping. When I returned, the door wouldn't open either by grasping the handle, nor did the electronic key work. I used the manual key, and once I opened the door, the security alarm went off. It stopped once I started the car. Later on in the day, everything seemed to work as normal. I'd like to know for future reference if there is a reason this happened. I have a 21 Subaru Forester, Ltd. Thank you!

If someone is inside a locked car, with their key, the door will remain locked for a secondary remote. I suspect you had another key in the car, which was actually used by car to lock the car when you touched the handle.

Just bought a 2022 Outback Limited and learned that when the liftback is automatically opening or closing, you can press the liftback button on your fob to pause. Very useful when, for example, you have a kayak on the roof that would otherwise cause the hatch to bounce back to close.

Alright, so, I just traded in my 07 Impreza for a 22 Outback Onyx (in Madrid, Spain. A shame Subaru does not sell Wilderness' or WRX anymore in Europe!), and the guy from the dealership had it all wrong. I was told there is no unlock button on the fob, and to use the proximity sensors to do that instead, which has not been working as expected... Thank you so much for this video :)

Have 2018 Crosstrek. For three years key fob could not open the car. Brought it back to dealer 4x. Replaced battery. That was about all they did. Problem persisted I would be sitting in car with it running and access key not detected warning would appear. I would take key from my pocket and wave it around inside the car and warning would disappear. Then dealer replaced BIU beginning Dec2022 as warranty was about to expire. No problem until this week. Car would not unlock without numerous tries. The yesterday it took 5 tries before it would unlock. Any ideas? Concerned about taking car to rural areas in case I get marooned out there.

Does the hidden emergency key allow the car to start? I’ve been wondering if having that key duplicated, as a spare, is possible. We’ve just forked out a king’s ransom for a duplicate key fob - so I feel that not having the option of an old-style key is a bit of a racket. The key cost more than my partner will get for her car. And, in case you ever need audio cues to tell if the car is locked or unlocked (hit the key fob without looking at it, it's dark, etc.) ONE beep equals lock, TWO equals unlock. Just like the number of syllables in each word.

Yesterday i came out of Costco, opened car, put keys, phone and purse on front seat and opened rear gate to put groceries in.When I went to get in the car all the doors were locked and there was no way to open them. I am 74 yr old and knew I could not get to the front seat so I asked for help. My new 22 wrx i did this all at the dealer very quickly and realized i had everything backwards after fighting it 3 times today pressing the lock button over and over on the handle realizing it wouldnt unlock lmao. The keyless proximity sensor normally only unlocks just the drivers side but you can change it in the settings to unlock all doors when in proximity. Great for moms

If you haven;t done so already, you might do a short vid on how to change the battery in the key fob. After 5 years, the warning light came on indicating low battery in the fob. It was fairly easy to change the battery. We did so on both of our fobs.

I don't know if you've ever mentioned it to customers, but the power rear gate on subarus is probably one of the best ones out there - they lift up high enough that you won't hit your head trying to put stuff in the trunk (like a Toyota), and they open fast enough that you don't feel like you're being slowed down by them (unlike a Toyota.)

Alex, I just watched two of your videos (about the 2021 Outback). They were very helpful....better than most of the videos on Outbacks I've seen. On one you were using a dead cat microphone cover. Thanks for doing that. As someone who has made a living doing voice-overs, radio announcing and TV work over the last 40 years I have a couple of recommendations that will help you stand out. Begin every video with a brief introduction, and I mean brief. Your name, where you work, subject of your video. Please, please do not use phrases such as: "hi guys", "hey guys", "what's up guys" "how ya doin' guys", "hope you guys have a great day" etc, etc. Another thing to avoid would be starting phrases or sentences with words such as: "So", "Aaaand" or similar words and phrases. Thanks for looking professional (beard trimmed, clean shirt, hat on straight, etc.) and speaking clearly.

I am the recent proud owner of a 2021 Outback XT Touring... The trunk lock button also locks all the doors, fuel cap and folds the mirrors not just the trunk. If you use the door handle sensor on the passenger side it unlocks all the doors - These settings are programmable in the menu system .. I have mine set to unlock all the doors when opening the tailgate.. Also I have mine set to lock all the. Doors as soon as I move the selector out of P rather than while moving. The technology in this car is awesome :-) ...

Locksmiths can now program prox equipped Subarus with ALL KEYS LOST.. no need for dealer to pull ECU and BIU, send it to the mothership for reprogramming... all not needed. PRogramming done via OBD with legit scan tools, no hocus-pirate-pocus.

I opened the hatch and she was able to unlock the door herself. I was in a rush when I picked up the rental so I had no time to acclimate myself to the vehicle. I pulled up your video and within 2 minutes, problem solved. It really helped because I was traveling and I needed to lock the car!!

I just bought a 2022 Subaru outback touring with 20,000 miles on it and I got home from buying the car at 9 o’clock at night and I had to be to work at 4:30 in the morning as soon as I got to work… I couldn’t lock my car. The key five didn’t work. I think it might’ve said something on the dash so soft to the window programming…. But I have a feeling I bought a very bad car and I paid $35,000 for it and only reason I had to buy a car is because my car was stolen and totaled.. I wish I could put a picture of the light that’s on my dashboard it’s green and it’s in the lower left-hand corner in between the corner in the middle and it looks like a key fob like a circle with a key fob in the middle…. i’ve been watching videos constantly, and I only have four hours in between shifts and I can’t find what this warning light is. The only thing I did find that looks similar is telling me to get into getting it into Subaru ASAP. Dealer said they did a 125 point check in the car was in great shape blah blah blah I can’t believe they got me for $35,000. Anyway I’m still totally cool but I’m 67 years old I had 0% interest on my car and I only owed $10,000 and I was just had three year anniversary on Labor Day weekend. I am in the shit and I am in this shit big time. It was the car I wanted it wasn’t my most financial smartest car deal because I could’ve made some way smarter deals, but this was the car I wanted and I think I bought a lemon I am so scared to drive to work in the morning, because I think there’s something wrong with the car do you know what this is? Hit the unlock (blue Subaru button) twice. First time unlocks only the driver’s door, second time unlocks all doors.

Help please. Lost forester 2021 Fob with key in another city and dealer says have to make a new one at cost if 2000 dollars because I don’t have the duplicate. That they have to remove computer, send it to Subaru who will analyze it and destroy access to the present code to car (wglhich therefore the have?) then inform dealer who will program new fob. Will take a week and Altogether $2,000. My second key is somewhere in boxes in another city. Tow truck says cannot put on flatbed because can’t put in neutral without a fob. Do you know if any cheaper solutions? Thanks muc!

Did you know that if your car battery is flat dead, even the legacy key will not open any doors? We discovered that on our 2021 Forester. The car had not been driven for a couple of months and the battery had zero charge. Once a service technician had opened the car through the window and the car was started, the key worked fine. I've searched for something in security settings that might change this, but no luck so far. 8:33

Is there a way to reset remote start on your kefob for 2021 Outback Premium with remote start? One of your videos showed how to use the key fob instead of the Starlite app but mine won't work.

Is there some way to deactivate the drivers seat belt chime temporarily? Example: I go thru a drive thru and release SB. Chime starts as I pull off. I park In parking area to eat and have to turn off car to stop warning chime.

I don’t know if this was mentioned. Quite a few comments. My concern with keyless entry is for the life of me, no matter the settings, I cannot get it to unlock only the driver side. If someone is in the passenger side and I touch the handle on the driver side, the passenger side unlocks if they touch it. I have it set to driver only on my 2023 outback. I had a man hop in my car one time because of this. I don’t feel safe at all! Please tell me I’m doing something wrong because I need this fixed!

You may have discovered this by now, but hitting the 'unlock' button twice, unlocks all the doors.

Hello Alex, can I open all four doors of my forester, I own a nissan and if I click the button to open the door once, it'll open only the driver's door, and clicking it twice it'll open al 4 doors. Thank you

I’m putting my 🤚 up as one of those people who didn’t know the blue logo on the fob was the unlock button. I had to unlock boot and climb through to the driver seat 😂 then I rang the dealer and asked how to unlock my car, not more than an hour of leaving the car yard with it.

Is there a way to make our 2019 Subaru Outback 3.6R stay on after remote starting and opening a door? If u pop the back or even open any door it shuts off which makes no sense as u now have to start the car again when u get it?

Love the videos however I can't use my fob to remote start my 2022 Onyx. The dealership say I have to pay to get that option. Is that true?

I have a 2019 Forester, and the panic button is so easy to hit because it's flush with the surface of the fob. I've disable the alarm system, but is there a way to disable the panic button without drilling the button out of the fob? It's seriously a design defect in the fob that Subaru needs a new fob design for.

I ordered the engine block heater, and battery warmer. I don't think they came with any kind of manuals to give me an idea of when to use them, best practices, etc. It would be great if you made a video on that.

open fuel lid with key fob, I get it. for safety since fueling in other side of car at gas station, Can I use fob to lock doors then just push close the lid. Will it cause to break the pin inside lid. I feel at risk when standing on other side of car fueling and driver door is unlocked. Please let me know if there is a better way to stay safe at station.
