The Canadair Regional Jet family of aircraft is another one of Bombardier's commercial aircraft programs that was sold off as part of their exiting the commercial aircraft market.
The CRJ program was bought by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan, with the deal closing in June of 2020. Let's see what it's like flying on Air Canada Express' Mitsubishi/Bombardier CRJ-900!

Oh my...I've been on this route (YYC-YQR) many times (in-law's in Yorkton). Gotta appreciate the "bustling" Regina airport. Thanks for sharing. This plane quickly became my favorite. Although I love the Dash-8's, the CRJs are always quiet and comfortable. I'm 6'5" and I've got plenty of legroom in any row. I do find the seat bottoms a bit flat, if not sloped downward which feels like I'm sliding down toward the floor.

Air Canada has probably one of the best CRJ-900 economy cabins out there. Yes the IFE screens are old, but they still function, and the seats are quite comfortable and well padded. I have done the YYC - IAH route on one of these and found them to be nicer than the United 737 aircraft.

During Bombarider's first brush with Bankruptcy after 9-11, it was bailed out by the Beaudoin family (descendants of Armand Bombardier) who bought the recreational prducts division (the original Bombardier) from Bombardier Inc. The family that created the company were not allowed to use the "Bombardier" branding, so what used to be Bombardier is now BRP. When Longview/Viking Air bought (progressively) all the ex deHavilland products from Bombardier, there was no branding problem because Bombardeir had bad reputation of abandonning these products (sucy as Twin Otter which Viking restarted), and the Dash-8 which Bombardier saw no future anymore since it was so focus on C-Series only. The water bombers had remained well known aroudn the wrld as "Canadairs" (like Q-Tips). so when Viking got them, there was no need to use "Bombardier". I have to assume that the name change for the CRJs is also due to legal requirement to stop using the Bombardier brand. Also, MHI wants to establish its name in the industry (which is why it bought the CRJ to get contacts within aviation industry) so would explain push to get airlines to use the Mitsubishi brand for CRJs. Nitpick: MHI did get "sales" but that refers mostly to parts and used/leased aircraft. They did not get anyt production capacity. Prior to transaction closing Bombardier delivered the last new CRJ and closed production line. The hangars at Mirabel were set to be sold to IArbus so it could increase C-Series production. Not sure if this happened. But MHI did not buy any capacity to build new ones. The one remaining question is what happens to the "Bombardier" name when what is left of Bombardier sells its remaining 2 private jets (Challenger and Global 7500) to anothetr company and folds. Will the name go back to the Beaudoin family and they can rename BRP back to Bombardier focused only on recrational products?

Update: 12F has a window but it's a wall next to the seat and you have to bend forward to look out as the window is a foot ahead. Do not get 12F if you like window seat to look outside. Dude. These are 90 seat airplanes that have been configured to carry 76. They have more legroom than any other Air Canada plane. You could have been seated in any row. Also, compared to the smaller 50 seat CRJ, the 900 has a lower floor which gives more headroom (and better views out the windows). This is also a very fast regional jet, 3 hours for that trip is pretty respectable.

Great video! I wonder if AC plans to phase out the PTV's on their CRJ's.. Your aircraft was one of the earlier examples Jazz received in the mid-2000's... back then they were known as CRJ-705's and flew fairly long distance flights like KIAH-CYYZ and KORD-CYVR... recently though, all the older models have been re-identified as CRJ-900's. Through Jazz Aviation has since been taking deliveries of new examples of the -900 since about 2016, only a handful of their "NextGen" models have the IFE system... all of the ones delivered in the last couple of years have the same seats and layout, but lack the IFE.. I'm hoping they either install IFE on the newest models they have or try and assign the shorter flights to those jets. for right now it really is inconsistent and it seems like you lucked out my friend! Cheers!

The 900's taken from Skywest had no IFE and I don't think they plan to install new ones. Not sure about the next gen series. Westjet's 737 max's don't have IFE while AC does so I thought AC would want all their aircraft to have that perk. I guess not.

Sorry I still stand by that it should still be referred to as a Bombardier CRJ since it was built under Bombardier and not Mitsubishi the same way you would not call a DC-10, MD-11, MD-88 (ok all mostly retired but you can get the point) a Boeing ____ . Last Christmas we ended up flying 4 hours on a American Airlines CRJ700 operated by Skywest which was originally supposed to be a A319. Even in first class 4 hours is too long in a CRJ especially with not IFE and no working wi-fi.

McDonel Douglass was purchsed by Boeing, Boeing owns the "McD" trademark so you could theoretically still call its McD DC-10. Mitsubishi only bought the rights to the CRJ product line, a dead/retired product, it did not buy the rights to use "Bombardier" name. Bombardier had stopped new sales of CRJs (since it was focusing on C-Series) and ceased production of the last orders before transaction to Mitsibishi.

Ah, Regina. The Canadian city that gave its name to a Swedish electric train, despite Regina itself not having electrified rail. Bombardier built six sligthly different variants for Swedish regional transit agencies and trans-regional train partnerships. I think the CRJ was going to be rebranded as SpaceJet, but it didn't quite sell under Mitsubishi ownership, only exasterbated by the pandemic. So MHI quietly discontinued the program during or after the pandemic.

Thanks for this. I will be on one in a few months and although I would have preferred a turboprop for the experience, at least I know what to expect and that I didn't pick the wrong seats.

Always enjoy your videos. Miss flying due to Covid. Incidentally, I worked in that AC hangar for a while a number of years ago. I commuted between YYZ and YUL. Good times.

I have flown the AC CRJ 900 6 times in the last 40 days and again next month. It’s fascinating that the newer ones have no IFE but have slightly better overhead storage. I would prefer if they installed a tablet holder instead of IFE. 3 hours on a CRJ is a long flight. Good call on the exit row. Thanks for putting together this trip report. Great quality work as always.

Re: last to board: happened to me twice. Once in 1990: person with mega problems at check-in made me very very last minute. I had lots of film so needed manual inspection with each roll of film extracted. Had no time to repack. Was still dressed as cyclist. Plane was on the remote wing at Dorval (still there nut much smaller. Running like mad across tunnel. Get to plane dressed as cyclist, hugffing and puffing, and as I walked the aisles film dropped here and there so had to stop, bend down to pick them up and walk till next films and other stuff dropped :-) This happened to me in 2019 as well, at DCA: Arrived at airport plenty of time, even accompanied boxed bike down to baggage room. BUT, a whole Southwest charger flight arrives in buses, pre-checked, and they all queue at Security at same time, I am behind them. Not only this, but security agent sees my boxes of salt water taffy from the beach that are taped together and insist to pen and check every candy. Air Canada agent (who had checked me in) walks from gate area, sees me being scrutinized by guy, guy sees here and magically all my baggage is fine. Had to pickup everyhing as loose baggage, including cycling shoes and run to plane wearing socks and cycling closes (no time to change), so same rigamorole of being last on board with loose luggage falling down and I was at last row of the CRJ700 so EVERYONE got to see me do this :-(. I just dumped all the loose stuff in overhead and repackagaged stuff once we landed.

I refuses to call it a Mitsubishi... It will always be the CRJ. I do miss the Jazz CRJ9 Flight from Calgary to Houston. I was hoping to get on it. But then COVID happened, now I have to wait. Lol

I just booked 19 A&B. Based on ur review. Seat guru is not that great on this aircraft. It shows the seat behind as a better option. They look the same ?

Mitsubishi, Bombardier…it doesn’t matter. I like the CRJ series. These small jets are useful for short, domestic flights and their rear-mounted engines make for a cool design

As it should. Mitsibishi did essentially nothing to them but buy it to use it for their MRJ program.

Most two-class regional jets (at least here in the states) have wireless entertainment, but seatback screens are really something.
