Brock Purdy is the NFL MVP, and that is apparently an extremely hot take. Despite putting up easily the best stats, and leading a historically good and efficient offense, there are narratives galore that say that he is a product of the system. Yes they have elite talent everywhere you look, and yes they have the best system in the league thanks to Kyle Shanahan, so how do we determine how good Purdy actually is, And whether or not he deserves the MVP. Well, we turn on the tape. This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 to analyze San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Brock Purdy in his quest to win the MVP.

Or how their ownership allows the GM to kick all the contracts down the line to avert the “salary cap”. Very similar to what the Rams did a couple years ago. Nothing wrong with this mind you but having an owner committed to winning it all is the biggest factor.

One thing you didn't mention was Purdy's accuracy. He not only throws with anticipation, which you mentioned, but those anticipatory throws have to be accurate to hit, and to get the YAC we have seen (and that the national media uses to try and bring him down). I also mention this because accuracy is actually why Purdy ended up at Iowa State. He got a walk-on preferred to Alabama, but not only was it not a scholarship, during the interview they talked about his lack of accuracy, and he knew they did not know who he was/hadn't seen his tape, since accuracy is something he prided himself on. You mentioned Jimmy G briefly, but him and Nick Mullens are clear examples of what an actual system QB looks like, for multiple reasons, and Brock is elevating the system while working within it.

Purdy has the 9th worst bad throw % at 17% of his passes. He's 14th in on-target % (75% of his passes). Despite all that, his team still has the fewest drops in the NFL (1.9% - nearly only half of the 2nd fewest drops by a time at 3.5%). Meanwhile Mahomes is 5th in on-target % (80.7%), and has the 3rd lowest bad throw % (12.4%) yet his receivers lead the league in drops (dropping a whopping 7.2%). Purdy also rarely has to throw the ball (21st in passing attempts). He barely has more attempts than Burrow, despite playing 4.5 more games lol. He legit has the fewest attempts out of all the QBs who have played the entire season, and even fewer than some who have only played 10-13 games. If you take into consideration total yards, Mahomes actually leads the NFL. This is not an insult to Purdy. Just merely pointing out how, despite having a much worse team, Mahomes is actually quietly having an all pro caliber season. If you adjusted his team's drops to match Purdy's team's drops, KC would only have one loss on the season and Mahomes would be on pace to have over 5000 yards and 35 TDs (as well as 4-5 less ints). It's actually crazy. Too bad when we look at MVP, we don't actually look at 'MVP.' We just look at the teams with the best records and say 'Well, that QB deserves it more than that other QB.' It's not a legitimate 'where would their team be if they didn't have X at QB.' The 49ers are 12 win team regardless who their QB is. Freaking Jimmy G, once they added McCaffrey and he actually got meaningful snaps (unlike the KC game - his first game, where he only had like 12% of the snaps) legitimately had a higher EPA than Purdy does this year. Legit, if Jimmy G didn't get hurt last year, would you have said he was worthy of the MVP? Probably not. The NFL is only giving Purdy this love because he was Mr. Irrelevant, and the 49er faithful actually love him (unlike how they HATED Jimmy G)

There were always people saying Brady was a system QB. It took a Superbowl with the Bucs AND this disaster of a season for the patriots to totally eliminate that narrative. Even if Brock is "the next Brady" or whatever, there will always be a narrative that he's a product of his circumstances due to his draft position. Go watch the QB school. Purdy actually misses a lot of wide open guys downfield. You just don't notice it because their offense has so much talent that multiple people are always open everywhere. If he makes a 10 yard pass to an open guy, you won't even think about or realize the fact someone was open on a deep crosser or something for 40 yards deep lol
@faveology
@faveology 9 ай бұрын
@@LaffinKingThe hardest throws to make, and even Purdy turns them down a lot, are the deep posts towards the boundary and the deep crossers. It takes a special arm to throw those, and most QBs will just turn it down for something else. If your team is good enough - such as Purdy's team is - you tend to have someone else open anyways, so you don't have to make the crazy throw. Like Mahomes and Allen this year have made some unreal deep boundary throws where they had to sling it in perfectly to even give their guy a chance. That stuff is honestly so impressive and blows my mind.

So let me get this right. His oline is average on their best day, he’s blitzed the most, and has the least time to throw, yet he’s able to make explosive plays down the field, use his legs to buy extra time, and attack you wherever on the field? Nah, it’s the SYSTEM. He’s no good!! Honestly, I think people should start calling him Neo bc he’s able to slow down time and pick you apart on every level of the field.
@faveology
@faveology 9 ай бұрын
He's tied for the 2nd highest pocket time in the NFL at 2.6 seconds. Also, the blitzing % is higher because he has the fewest passing attempts out of any QB who has played all 14 games this year by damn near a mile. He's pressured on only 20.9% of his drop backs (16th in the NFL). Legit, the only stats he leads the NFL in is passing TDs and YAC/completion - which the YAC/completion is by damn near a full yard from the second place person (which I would argue is a testament to the talent around him). The elite defense and running game legit makes it so he never has to truly struggle. When he has to play from far behind, or when he is forced to throw vs them being able to run and play field position for their elite defense, his stats drop drastically. That's counting for last year as well btw. Go look at all his career games where he has 30 or more attempts. He has one good game. He has only faced two elite defenses in his career. The Eagles last year in the playoffs (which I don't count since he got injured), and the Browns this year. He looked like trash vs the Browns. 12/27 passing less than 150 yards, and 44% of his throws were deemed bad throws. We'll see how good Purdy is when they face the Ravens. If he can put up a 3+ TD 0 int performance, then yes, he deserves MVP. Otherwise, heck no.

Other than that, the initial comment is actually a pretty sharp observation..nfl qbs are suppose to be role models, heroes to some…I know one thing that makes me really dig Purdys whole story, Is the fact that his very presence in the nfl currently (with his accomplishments in mind) questions the efficiency and legitimacy of the nfl drafting process…opens the door for many others who were overlooked for their size and other things the nfl doesn’t slobber over.

Purdy had the same, on fewer successful throws, playing at his absolute worst. The entire game was won by the defense, and even the ravens team admitted this was an unusual game for Purdy in the first place and their entire victory hinged on the defense stepping up. You should have brought up all the false narratives that they try to perpetuate when delegitimizing Purdy 1. "He can't win if a one of his stars is missing" 2. "He can't win when trailing in a game" So for number 1 its really this simple: -He went 3-0 last year without Deebo. But NOBODY seems to be any to remember that For #2 its a little tougher because he's only had 5 games in which he was trailing in the second half The first one was against the Raiders last year where he led a 4th Quarter comeback and eventual OT win. But for some reason that doesn't count in people mind The second one was in the playoff game against Seattle. Nobody seems to remember that the 49ers were losing that game in the 2nd half because they ended up winning comfortably The third was the Browns game this year that, YES he and the rest of the offense was terrible all game. But on that last drive... with Deebo, CMC, AND Trent all injured he drove the ball into game winning field goal range and the kicker missed it The final 2 times he sucked in the comeback attempt. There's no denying it. But hey.... it happens. Mahomes threw a horrible game losing pick to the Packers. Hurts threw 2 horrible game losing picks (one WITH the lead) to the Seahawks, Dak throws horrible game losing picks every year seemingly.... it fucken happens So to sum it up. Purdy is 2-3 when trailing in the second half of games and would be 3-2 if Jake Moody makes a 40 yard field goal And 3-3 in games where Deebo was out or missed most of the game And f.y.i Patrick Mahomes is 0-1 in games without Kelce and Chris Jones... so I guess that means, using this retarded ass logic that people like to apply to Purdy: "Patrick Mahomes can't win without Kelce and Chris Jones" Which is stupid to say I know. The way you can tell he's truly good is because he makes it look so easy that people start thinking anyone can do it. Before this season no one was calling Deebo or Aiyuk "All Pro"; in fact Eagles fans were even saying Deebo would be WR3 on their team. Also, no one in the entire Shanahan scheme is doing the things that Brock is doing: not Tua, not Stroud, not Jimmy G, NO ONE. The closest would've been Matt Ryan and he won MVP
@faveology
@faveology 9 ай бұрын
What? No way you are serious with that lmao. Aiyuk, sure, but Deebo? Hell no. People may have said they didn't view Deebo as a true WR, and I agree. If you only put Deebo outside and had him play like a traditional receiver, he wouldn't even be top 20 in the NFL. HOWEVER, when you use him to his strengths - screens, runs, motion handoffs, etc. he is easily a top 10 WR in the NFL. He just isn't in the traditional sense. Aiyuk, however, was always viewed as true WR1 potential by most people in the NFL. He isn't all pro worthy, though. Idk where you get the thought process that he is all pro worthy. Lastly, they also have Kittle and CMC. CMC is the best 'do it all' RB in the NFL by a mile. Kittle is easily a top 3-5 TE. If anything, I think they are underutilizing Kittle. That man only has 76 targets? No way. He's on pace to have less than 100 targets. That is nuts. He should be getting 8+ targets a game. The fact he isn't just further proves how stacked the 49ers are Edit: You also say nobody in the Shanahan system is doing what Purdy is doing. Tua doesn't need to. He has the lowest pocket time in the NFL at 2.1 seconds. Yet he leads the NFL in passing yards. You can say 'well he has Hill and Waddle' but that would be comical coming from anyone saying Purdy deserves MVP 😂

@bazimyan 9 ай бұрын
@@faveology huh? People are literally saying both are "All Pro" which is why Brock is so successful; you're arguing with their arguments, not mine. And yes, Deebo was considered top 10 receiver before but they weren't calling him "All Pro" before this year which means top 2 in the entire league. Brock's detractors are now saying that Aiyuk/Deebo were the best at their positions when before this year only Deebo was considered "top 10", and Aiyuk was lauded for his potential, as you said, rather than his actual production on the field.

What i love about Purdy is that hes continued to get better. Usually young qbs top out in middle of their 2nd yr. Hes getting better vs the best teams. He is making me a believer in him being an elite top 10, possibly top 5 qb. Some of the best qbs in nfl now usually struggle vs pressure and they usually win out on arm talent or scheme. Purdy does it with leage best anticipation and understanding of the pre snap look. He actually knows the likely outcome of the progression play to play. He is showing why the film room will elevate your play in the most crucial situations. Very good coaching and obviously Purdy and Shannahan are in complete agreement on tempo, philosophy, and execution. This is the best NFL team and one other reason is huge, Trent Williams. Hes probably the best LT in last 20 years.

That is a clear-out route, he might not even have been a receiving option on the play. You know how football works, right? Not every player running a route is necessarily a target on the play. Without knowing the play call, you can't say he missed, or made a bad decision.
@faveology
@faveology 9 ай бұрын
That was also just a great route by the receiver. He keeps it flat instead of rounding it off, and he kind of slows himself down in the soft spot. He basically made Purdy's job as easy as possible. Those type of plays are less 'great throw by the QB' and moreso 'great decision-making making and finish by the receiver.' You might think the receiver is making the play every receiver should, but the amount of receivers who would mess up that route and either have their QB throw an int or an incomplete pass is astoundingly high - even for the NFL level.

Would love to see a comparison of Purdy vs Lamar and how they each elevate their respective teams. If only we could see that play out in a real game... oh wait :p

The Aiyuk bad route completion really highlights that its not just scheme and teammates. Lol a lot or these are Aiyuk messing up a route but getting the ball delivered perfectly. (ie not just ones you highlight)

Awesome video. I agree it’s important to highlight how much of Purdy’s success is about avoiding the negative plays just as much as hitting the big ones. Most of those don’t make the highlight reels, but they’re critical to keeping an offense moving. Just being able to turn a sack or a throwaway into a 5-8 yard gain is huge. Plus, of course, the ones where he extends the play until a receiver comes open 30 yards down the field. 😁

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a consorted effort by the media to actively ignore a players ability and talent. I don’t know why more people aren’t trying to find ways to give Brock praise. He’s arguably the best qb story in the NFL right now. I guess people are just ignorant or jealous. They’ll come around 😅 At a point I don’t think they’ll have a choice

It's the ego of the media. They didn't anoint him as a narrative, so they want to ignore him now.
