CJ Stroud is the runaway rookie of the year, and for him, that’s just the beginning. The Houston Texans absolutely hit a homerun selecting the Ohio State Quarterback in the 2023 NFL draft, and now they have set their franchise up for success. What makes Stroud so good and how are the Texans deploying him within their scheme to help him dominate? This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 to analyze the Houston Texans rookie Quarterback CJ Stroud.

What’s craziest about that TD throw to Schultz late in the game was it was CJ’s idea to have him run the double move. He knew exactly what the LB and S would do after seeing it twice and he convinced the coaches to run the play and score

As a Panthers fan when panthers traded up to #1 all that could be talked about were the three QBs. AR looking like Cam 2.0. Bryce having elite anticipation. And Stroud having the typical QB form and good arm power. But everyone was like "Young is an elite processor. Stroud you may have to worry about. Just dont know being an ohio guy" Well... now we know. Now we definitely know.

As a Carolina Panther fan (who wanted CJ over Bryce) seeing Stroud play so well is insanely bitter sweet. Stroud seems to have everything the scouts were so high on Young about. Anticipation. Reading defenses. Manipulating defenses. Accuracy. I hope Young can turn it around but HE was the one who was supposed to be the sure thing. Good thing we didn't trade two first round picks for him. OH WAIT. Stroud's making our front office look foolish.

Yeah dude when Carolina traded with Chicago I assumed CJ was the pick up until a week before the draft. I don’t think Bryce should have been taken in the first 2 rounds let alone number 1. This will be a decision that’ll get Reich fired. I can’t imagine trading all that capital for a. 5’8 QB when the following year the draft class is loaded with QB talent.

@@steveosborn7224 Bryce might not be off to a great start, but saying he shouldn't have been taken in the first 2 rounds is just straight up nonsense. Hating is one thing but if you watched any college football at all, you'd know Bryce had the best college career from this year's draft class and EVERYBODY agreed on that, even the ones who had Stroud as QB1 on their board. The only thing negative people had to say about Young was his size. Also, how about we stop making up numbers? Yes Bryce is small, but he's not 5'8. Couch GMs sure love spewing bullshit. At least get your facts straight.

Don't be silly. Offering Matt Ruhle guaranteed $ then hiring Proven Failure Frank Reich as HC is what makes them look foolish. We can watch in excitement as Reich paces the sidelines looking for what's just wrong enough in his o-line schemes to tweak for the 2nd straight year at least because he sure isn't going to abandon what he;s convinced should work. Indy's o-line was better before & after him. Last season this o-line won _with_ Sam Darnold & without run-CMC. Then came Frank Reich. He gets the least out of his QBs.

I never understood Bryce young going high. Even before the offseason buzz. Thought he would be a 2nd round QB based off his tape, he has zero potential. Dont mean to doom your team, poor panthers, but even AR had the potential to be like cam or vick, who does Young play like? Johnny Manziel? Scramble for a wide open 10 yard pass, throw deep once or twice and let your wr win the 50/50 jump ball everytime because you’re in an elite offense. I mean you watch him play in college you start to realize he’s already arrived. He wasnt better than this in college

You rightfully highlight his anticipation and poise. However, a more complete answer to the question of why he is the runaway rookie of the year contender would also have addressed a) his accuracy, and b) the fact that he is accomplishing all this with an inexperienced receiving corps while missing FOUR starters on the O-Line.
@t4d0W
@t4d0W 9 ай бұрын
The receiver group may not be great but in comparison to other teams with 'bad' receiver groups, they still have traits that pressure the secondary. Collins is tall, has a nice catch radius and can routes well enough that if he hauls the catch down he's getting YAC (as he's one of the leaders in that category). Dell of course is the vertical speedster so as you saw in the video, if CJ knows he's gonna win he will find him downfield. The Panthers have it worse because none of their guys can separate OR have the hands (other than Thielen) to win in a mismatch.

That release looks impressive. I haven’t seen a number on him but I’m guessing he’s mid-0.3s. And he certainly has a very good arm as well. I’m thinking that people have underestimated Stroud’s arm numbers overall. (I just watched the beginning of his combine. He was clocked at 59 MPH - I think the average is 55 so Stroud has a very good arm. But ball speed and spiral are really only the two factors that matter and they will tell you how far a QB can throw. For comparisons Hurts and Dak I believe were clocked at 55 at their combines.)

at times he does not give his WRs enough time to break into their route. there has been some drops due to the WR turning and the ball is already at them, sometimes even when Stroud could have held on the ball just a tick longer. but that is a fine problem to live with when it is usually the polar opposite for most rookies

At 9:20 I think the design's intent is for the TE to be successful in that block. The thing I'm not sure of is if it was designed with a low block to occupy the defenders hands trying to avoid the block giving Stroud a lane to throw or if it is supposed to be standing up and trying to guide the defender back and past Stroud to clear that lane. In writing this, I think the thought process is to find a way to open up a lane that Stroud can throw through.

Scheme is scheme. Play calling goes beyond scheme which is also adapting to the defense and play sequencing. There are many guys from the OZ coaching tree who sadly aren't great with those skills I mentioned. Also talents help elevate schemes more to what they can be. Just look at the CMC when he got the Niners and how different their offense is from recent years. The ideal scenario/plan for the Texans offense year 1 was to sorta look like the 2018 Rams where Pierce was going to do the heavy lifting. Sadly that hasn't been the case since the O-line has been injured. Instead Stroud for 6 weeks has answered elevating the offense by himself.

Having that elite speed to be a vertical threat helps threaten the top so CJ can punish teams who don't respect the potential mismatch. Meanwhile the Pats receiver groups got zero speed on the boundaries (anywhere really) and defenses can sit on Mac Jones playing cover 1 all day. Its like the opposite of Mahomes where he probably sees the most cover 2 and he still can punish defenses doing it.

A question about the Texans how they will do their center and guard positions? They drafted two centers, Juice Scruggs high and Jarrett Patterson later. Right now Patterson is the center as Scruggs is hurt. When Scruggs return, how will Houston address the center and guard positions. Will they start them both?

3:20 stroud called that play himself just based on what he saw during the game. They didnt have a fleshed out play for it so he just described to shultz what he meant as well as he could until he understood.

Saw the Texans first game to open the season and to me they just did not look good. Didn't think they would win more than 2 games but I'm glad I was wrong. Stroud looks impressive along with the rest of team. Keep in mind I think the offensive line has been banged up since week 1 also.

As an Ohio State fan.. I will admit, I thought he would have been better off if he returned for his senior year. Most Ohio State QB’s that go to the league.. usually bust because they went after the money before they were ready. I think Fields has potential to do just as well as Stroud but he’s on a hot mess of a team and the Bears suck.. and their coaching sucks and they can’t build a consistent system built to highlight Fields strengths. Fields definitely needed to come back for his last year at OSU though. Hopefully the Texans don’t do Stroud dirty like the Bears have let Fields down.

Im extremely surprised being that he came out of Ohio State, I don’t think we’ve had a quarterback do well in the NFL yet. Because the wide receivers are so good at OSU, a quarterback doesn’t need to be accurate to do well there.

Modern football is set up to make superstar QBs. Not to knock the players because the Modern crop of QBs are very talented and would have gone to waste in previous eras where RBs reigned supreme. The game is more exciting and the mental ability, and skill of QBs are rewarded more than the pure physical prowess required for dominant RBs

The QB position is overpowered and needs to be nerfed. When a team can only win if it has a once in a generation QB, that's not good for the game. The NBA kind of does this too to hurt team ball because it's not good for ratings.
