Today we are diving into my thoughts on my Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 after 1 year owning and riding it. Just general thought and discussion along with some footage riding the Continental GT 650 on country roads. Spoiler alert I still love my Royal Enfield 650 GT, but I will cover general likes and dislikes, and overall Royal Enfield 650 Twin quality so far.

For me it's all about the styling of the Continental GT 650. Could have bought just about any bike on the market. Could have got more hp , better fit and finish, lower maintenance schedule. But I love the styling and always get compliments from the curious everywhere I go . Bike being reliable and a joy to ride are icing on the cake.

Not surprised. Saw a review video in which man-on-the-street questions were being asked about the perceived value, and people CONSISTENTLY (and greatly) overestimated the price-point. Aside from the styling, I think that things like the welds and the PAINT JOB make these things look even more-impressive, especially considering the price. Well, they've been building them "forever," in India, AND the acquisition of tech know-how, as with RE's purchase of Harris Performance seems to have been a wise investment. And, if they were going-to add a "frill," to a no-frills bike, ABS as a standard feature is a good place to start. As for the tires, I've heard that Michelins have been a worthwhile upgrade, when replacement-time rolls-around. ALSO, you can get Brembo PADS to replace the existing pads, once those wear-out.

5 months and 5,500 miles on my 2020 650INT. I have two 2012 Triumphs to compare the R.E. to. Wheel widths are identical, as are stock tire cross-sections. I put 110/90 front and 140/70 rear tires on my Bonneville, it cured my center-stand scrape problem on left handers; will do the exact same tire size swap on my R.E., already have the tires... A 140/70 rear "gears up" by two percent, a 150/70 by four percent. Putting a 110/90 on the front will reclaim (or correct) the odometer optimism (driven by front wheel) that is roughly three percent. I am 70, 6'4" tall and 220lbs and would recommend the R.E. 650 to-the-masses. Nary a problem other than front brake disc intermittent squealing which has healed itself. Have used 75 gallons for an average of 72+ mpg; range is incredible. Very happy with my 650. Update: April 26, 2022 bike is just now at 24,000 miles, I have two of the S&S 750cc big bore kits and just finishing the "first one" of 2 that I have planned. Also added a full stainless-steel exhaust (TEC), bike weighs 429 pounds full of fuel.

1 year in and 18k Miles (29k Km)down and i still love this bike despite its low power. I use it every day for commuting and it's served me well so far. Have had a few problems, had to have a new rectifier, and my front brakes have started to bind (There's a Factory recall here in the UK for that problem) The switch gear are a bit intermittent, but it is kept outside so its no surprise due to the quality of them. My main gripe is the size of the tank, i would love to have a 16 litre plus size, especially as filling it to the brim is a bit of a pain... It would just allow me a greater range of riding without having to worry about where the next garage is. I May get myself a custom tank made, but even with these little niggles its still one of my favorite bikes in the garage.

The only real complaints I have seen on the Royal Enfield forums, are the relays. People complain that they are packed with way to much dielectric grease from the factory, which supposedly causes starting issues and stalling. I only have 120 miles on the clock so far, so my Continental isn't broke in yet. I love the position of the foot pegs, just the right amount rearward position for my height of five nine. I am 66 years old and wanted a classic styled cafe racer. I am coming off a 2012 KLR-650 that I owned for ten years brand new. This is my thirteenth motorcycle. I enjoy the linear power that this twin produces, more than adequate for my needs and wants. I plan on keeping this bike stock, and keeping the maintenance up to date. Royal Enfield's seem to have a loyal fan base in the world, and really are amazing motorcycles. I plan on riding into my seventies, as I started riding and racing motorcycles when I was thirteen years old. I always wanted a Triumph or MV-Augusta growing up, but the British styled Royal Enfield twins really do impress me, inexpensive, easy to work on, joy of ownership a basic no frills motorcycle. Top of the day to you my friend! 🏁🏁

Thanks for the honest review. I just test rode an Interceptor 650 yesterday and I feel in love with the power of this bike. My other bike is a Harley Road Glide Ultra. I thought this bike would feel underpowered from what I am used to but I was happy to find that was not the case. I am thinking of adding this bike to the garage as my second ride but I really feel for around town it will become my primary ride. I am glad to hear after 1 year you are still happy with the bike. You can always change the front sprocket to one tooth more to lower the RPM's at highway speeds without losing too much of its power. As far as the foot pegs, I think RE was afraid they might turn off riders if the pegs were any further back or higher. The Continental GT is a Cafe racer, not a sport bike. So I think RE did right with the pegs. The top gear could be higher, but changing the front sprocket would be a cure to your RPM problems.

Try changing your sprocket. either front or back in number of teeth. This can get you a little more on top end speed. if that's what you are aiming for. The only downside of sprocket change is you may give up performance in low and mid range. So we are kind of limited to the performance of our stock bikes, but they were designed from the factory to perform adequately as an overall package. I bought also the Royal gt 650 and I agree that this is a very good bike for beginners but also for those who love the cafe racer style and this bike is one of the most popular models this year I can agree that when I bought it I had to go to another city to buy it as many fans of the classic two cilinder motorcycles have bought them out.This style is a work of art and history, I can totally agree that it lacks more final gears but basically this bike is something else it is good and different from modern models, not all riders will be able to get used to a few drawbacks, but this is not it is very important because the disadvantages are insignificant and are mainly solved by simple costomization.My opinion is a nice copy in order to enjoy life while driving it may many of you have same feeling.

I'll be curious about the reliability of the RE 650s (especially because I just bought one). I'm no gear head but everything I've heard is that they have a relatively simple engine and not that much in the way of electronics. You would think that the combination of modern manufacturing specs and a simple engine would lead to a pretty reliable bike, but we are talking about RE here and not some Japanese company, so who knows.

You might try a countershaft sprocket with one more tooth. It's a cheap experiment. I went up one tooth on the countershaft and down one tooth on the rear sprocket on my son's Thruxton. Now the bike lives in the fat part of the powerband. It's so sweet

Solving the complaint of the gear ratios could be done by changing the front or rear sprocket (or both) to "stretch" the gear ratios. The trade-off would be taller gears which tame the "peppy-ness" you enjoy.
@jonlobello7151
@jonlobello7151 3 жыл бұрын
It seems like you can address both of those complaints as soon as the aftermarket catches up to your bike. After market rear sets, and either a bigger front sproket (in number of teeth), or a smaller rear sprocket in number of teeth for your highway RPM issue. I own a Honda Hawk gt and I would also like to lower my highway cruising RPM rate.

The bike is built to a price and is very cheap for what it is I have only a couple of complaints they are the switchgear and the indicators look and feel a bit too cheap and the seat for me is a bit hard . The only other bad things I have heard is that a few of the bolts have been cross threaded at the factory other than that the bike is a massive step up from the older RE singles in both performance and quality .

Good review. Makes sense. No bike is perfect once placed in the real world situation or being compared with other bikes. The more time you spend with it you will love it more. I also had to make an adjustment or two with the brakes and the seat due to the road conditions i ride on to. If the bike is parked in a shaded garage then you would not have corrosion issues for atleast a decade if not then can't say. Every bike goes through normal wear and tear so it will. Keep up the riding spirit high🤘

Oops, careless dogs :o ... ha ha, as I had 3 bikes at once there was a funny thing, when I drove over the country on smaller roads there was a German sheppard who always attacked me riding the Yamaha XT 250 but didn't it at the Honda CB 500 Four (model 1973) ... perhaps the 4 exhaust pipes impressed him :)

I'm a proud Bonneville T120 owner. It does everythign I want it to do. But there's always a nagging throught in the back of my mind that thinks, "Could I have gotten the same capabilities from a bike priced half that of the T120?" Ugh. I'm just thinking the T120 brings more performance to the table, so I think I did make the right choice but I'm not sure :/

I own the GT650, 2022 in Dux Deluxe... I like the bike in almost every way, but there are a few things I would change. 1: The grey mounting parts for the headlight/ turn signals and front fender. That grey just looks out of place imo. 2. As to the signals, I like the style of them but would like them tucked in a bit, they are just odd to me. 3. I don't mind mickey mouse mirrors, but I would like them to be a bit higher. 4. I would have liked the fenders to be metal. 5. I know there are tubeless spoke wheels and tires out there, they could have used that instead of the tubed ones. 6 and final. The grease usage in the relays is insane, I wish they had used 1/4 of the amount. That said, I wouldn't change my purchase of the RE GT650 for anything :)

Thank you for the video. Glad to hear you plan on keeping this bike which hopefully means more videos like this one in the future. I too own one of these bikes, my only complaints are the weight at just under 200kg and the saddle height (I'm a short guy) but TEC bike parts say they have rear shocks that will help with that (I'll buy a pair when they get the finish I want back in stock). Best regards.

I checked this bike out when it first debuted. I thought it felt too heavy and the reach to the bars too extreme (I prefer the Interceptor's ergos). Also, these bikes don't have a gear indicator - can't go back to a bike without one. But for the money, it's great value. Glad to hear it's been reliable.

Hi Alex, first of all I want to congratulate you on such a to the point video regarding your bike. So many of these reviews center around some stupid music and a guy riding along and talking about how wonderful it is. You covered all the bases very very well. I do have a question, one of the negative issues some reviewers have mentioned regarding the 650 twin engine has been the throttle mapping issues at low RPMs. This is especially troublesome on Japanese bikes as well as triumphs I understand. I'm referring to of course snatching type acceleration at low RPMs as well as hard deceleration at low RPMs. Effectively ruining that nice smooth feeling we all want. You did not mention anything about that. Is that because your bike does not suffer that?

Hi Alex. Just a tip on the ride video. I am watching this at 360p, but feels like 144p. Anything below 1080p is grainy. You might want to experiment on why this is so. (I watch all videos on 360p because my wifi is maxed out with work for 2 ppl plus family watching stuff. So as a rule I keep youtube videos at 360p for all in my house for glitch free viewing :D ).

Interesting! I shoot everything at 1080 on both cameras (I can do 4k but I find it not beneficial for most of my purposes, and much larger files). I edit and do all of my quality checking at 1080 and then watch on youtube at 720, so I had not noticed! I will look into the settings on the GoPro and see if I can figure out what would cause the grainy look at lower resolutions. Possibly just a conversion issue during upload since I do it all at 1080+ natively...very interesting.

I love the look but the idea of the wimpy power output puts me off. I own a 2019 SV650 and a 2015 Honda CB500X. I also have an 2012 FJR1300 and 2003 Duc 800SS. The SV is snappy enough to never really leave me wanting for more power. My CB500X has the same horsepower as the RE 650 and weighs less. It feels just adequate. I like the lower output when I am riding on dirt roads as there is no way to use more anyway and it makes it easier to control. Passing power is a bit lacking on pavement. If the RE had the same hp/weight ratio as my SV, I might consider swapping since I really love the look. Alas, I think it would be a disappointment. I had a 2000 Triumph Thunderbird for a little over a year. Loved it at first for the retro feel, got rid if it because it was boring to ride after a while. I had a sports car at the time and every time it was a sunny summer day, I took the car to work instead of the bike. I figured if you'd rather drive your car on a pretty summer day, you own the wrong bike.

I know this video is a couple of years old ... but anyway... to the issue of wanting the top gear to be a little bit taller... if it were me, I would just get a front sprocket that is maybe 1 tooth more than the original one. Or possibly a tooth or two less in the rear. Believe me, that would not be enough to even be noticeable in a negative way in the lower gears but in 5th and 6th it would be enough to drop your rpms so that highway riding is more relaxed and enjoyable. I have done that with a couple of my bikes and people always act like it will hurt your acceleration a lot but it doesn't. Math indicates that it would a little technically, but in the real world, unless you are at a drag race, you won't even notice it.
