I just replaced all 24 on my dodge grand caravan, took me 4 days. For anyone looking to do this job I would say that once you have the cam phaser, chain and cam shaft marked you can take the locking brick out when you're trying to put the came phaser back on the cam shaft. This will make getting it back on so much easier. Knowing what I know now I think I could do this job in a day. Sadly, I dont think I fixed my issue. It started with a 302 code, replaced the spark plugs, and coils. Then a replaced all 24 valves and rockers. Cam shafts were good luckily. The van is still running rough after one test drive, so it might be a low compression on one of the cylinders. I should have checked this first before doing this job. I'm not a mechanic so lessen learned. Hopefully this helps someone out there. Keep up the good content Alex.
@327JohnnySS Жыл бұрын
A compression gauge is not to much $ and is a very helpful tool. Sorry to hear that you went through all that effort and expenses to get the same results. You are not alone and that is how we learn from mistakes of not following the procedure of the gas,spark, compression thingy in a non diesel engine. You can buy a fresh long block and switch the other parts over or find a junkyard engine with good compression. Best of luck.👍

@daveunbranded11 ай бұрын
If you think you have bad compression, you should be able to disconnect the ignition fuse and simply listen to the cranking. If it is uneven, you have a compression issue.

Timing chain tensioner tool is not required. You can put the timing tool between the cam phasers and remove one cam at a time. I found that easier than screwing around with the wedge and pin
@THETOPGLOCK2 ай бұрын
So when you unbolt the phaser, the cam doesn’t spin because of tension from the valves?
@firstlast---2 ай бұрын
@@THETOPGLOCK The phaser is keyed to the camshaft. I would recommend holding the camshaft with a wrench during the inital loosening of the bolt to prevent accidental shearing of the pin/keyway

@@firstlast--- Ok thanks. I wasn’t sure. I did a timing job on a Jeep Commander 3.7 some years ago. I had to lock the cam down so it wouldn’t turn from the pressure of the valves. DOHC looks to be easier.

@@THETOPGLOCK Pressure from the valve springs can make most camshafts "jump" it will stay in place when you're at tdc. Depending on the engine will depend on how easily the camshaft will move. Overhead cam engines are far more likely to jump

Hi! Excellent video, I’m pretty new to engines and will be taking auto mechanics class in January. I have what you might think is a dumb question so bear with me. I bought a junk 3.6 pentastar engine to practice taking apart and I’m following your video step for step but when I got to the part your lining up the arrows by turning the harmonic balancer bolt, I turn mine but the camshafts don’t move. The chain is on there nice and tight and when I turn the crank bolt it’ll turn but nothing will happen then after a half a turn it won’t turn at all. When I turn it the other way it’ll turn halfway then just stop again. Not sure what’s happening

The manufacturers have been selling junk in the last 15 years and have been using low quality metals and building crap plastic engine parts with other components. Proper maintenance and oil changes are key. One of my vehicles is a 1996 Toyota 4-Runner 2wd automatic 3.4 with 410k and not in the rust belt. Most dependable vehicle that I have even owned. @@kawasakicruisader5600 all should be well, especially if you soak the lifters in oil before installing them.
