I have 155,000 on my 2013 town and country 3.6. Lifter or lifter’s started pecking so I watched your video and it was great, very informative. I don’t have the room in my garage to do the work and I don’t have the time. So I called a famous repair shop in the Dayton Ohio area (they are even on the radio on Saturday’s) and asked for a price out the door replacing all lifters and rocker’s, barring the cams are ok. I know I could buy all good quality parts for 300$ excluding gasket sets. I figured labor would take less than 8 hrs. So l doubled the 300$ and figured 1,000$ for labor (1,600$ would be in the neighborhood right?). They quoted me 3,500$, I said you are kidding right? So I said what about just putting a remanufactured engine in it from jasper. I was told 12 - 15 thousand dollars. I just started laughing. I paid 15,000 for it back in 2018. They make dealerships look honest! Bend over baby!
@MotorCityMechanic

Your bit the first to say that. I can’t understand what a lot of shops quote that price when what I feel is accurate is more around $1500ish without any cams
@charvakkarpe
@charvakkarpe Жыл бұрын
@@MotorCityMechanic Thanks for sharing your insights on pricing, a lot of channels won't discuss money for some reason. I'm potentially going to quote this job for a customer and I've had trouble reconciling the hours quoted by the book, the prices shops are throwing at people who post about it on forums, and what I think the job involves. I'm thinking of offering $1000 labor plus parts, but I want to make sure I'm not underpricing and end up messing up my week. There's another video out there that says it's a 20 hour job and a shortcut makes it 10 hours. Book time is 5.4 to 7.2 hours. I bet you can do it in under book time, I hope it takes me around 10 - 12 hours given it's my first time. And even if it takes me longer, I guess I can feel comfortable about my price quote given that you would do it for not much more. Her car was ticking on cold start after having not run for many months, eventually warmed up and smoothed out. A short while later, it began running rough when cold and misfiring. We'll try a good oil change and premium filter, but I'm preparing for the possibility of stuck lifters.

I closely followed all steps in this two-part series to replace the valvetrain components in the left head of my 2015 Wrangler's ticking 3.6 Pentastar at 60K miles. There was, indeed, a bad lifter and exhaust rocker arm. After a couple of weeks of road and freeway use, the motor is still purring and I'm confident my repair is successful and going to hold up. I could not have done it without your incredible guidance, David! I've been intimidated to get any lower than the top of the valve covers for 30 years since a younger, tool-challenged me screwed up a couple of engines. Yet here I am a short time ago, confidently holding my Jeep's camshaft for reference photos! Furthermore, since I live in Western Washington where parts and repair costs are HEAVILY inflated, between this and my horribly-located PCV valve change, I saved myself nearly $5K! A well-earned gift is coming your way, my friend! Thank you on behalf of my whole family.

Very well done. I only wish this was the 2.7L, since that's what I'm working on. I already did the timing chain, cam chains, tensioners, guides, water pump, put it all back together, ran perfect for a week, and now I hear heavy ticking on the upper half. Unlike your motor, the 2.7, (at least in the '05 Chrysler 300), the rocker arms are on the top and they only rest on the lifters. Some of mine were overly loose though and now I get to take it apart again. Even though your engine and much of the process is different, I'm still on my way now to watch part 2. Thanks again for a great vid!

Just wanted to say thanks again for this video. I just noticed ticking in my 3.6 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I watched your videos to educate myself about the repair. I shopped it to two different Jeep dealers. Discussing it with them after watching the video made all the difference in selecting the right one to do the job. There was no cam damage luckily. They replaced all of the rockers and lifters and it's quiet as a mouse now. My car has 185,000 mi on it.

In the middle of this job. Took the back valve cover off today. So far hardest part was pulling out the back wire harness attached by three push pins and then pulling off the valve cover. Being the first time was not sure how hard to pull on them. I'm also three trips into Harbor Freight for a stethascope which is tremendous, close quarters torx driver thingy and a shorter set of big sockets as the deep sockets will not give you enough clearance. Home Depot for a 36mm socket. Without these videos none of this would have been possible. Thank you. One bad rocker in the middle of the closest to center cam.

I love that you explain why the other methods aren’t a good idea. Saw a few videos of the pry method. It looks bad I mean you can easily wreck the valve cover surface or the springs.

Outstanding instructional video. After watching the video I did the complete job myself and saved thousands! Thank you David for taking the time to make these video's. Your presentation and knowledge is nothing short of perfection. I would not have attempted this job without your instructions. FYI: I started hearing a slight tick which sounded like a failed ( old school) lifter tick. I did not wait long. Upon tear down inspection I had one bad rocker, one collapsed lifter and two weak failing lifters and had slight cam damage but only on the edge and not the lobe as described as best case scenario Engine was clean and had 93K 2013 GC. While there I replaced 24 rocker arms, 24 lifters, EGR, Plugs, Radiator fan, Thermostat, serpentine belt, tensioner and flushed the coolant. Take your time and follow David to the letter. Make sure you have the necessary tools ahead of time and of course all the needed gaskets. Thank you again David. You ARE the Master Mechanic!

Thank you so much David. I replaced a set of (24) rockers, lifters and one cam. I found a rounded left intake cam(#6) during the process. The tools recommended and advise to replace all made sense. I did this in my home garage with the tension release tools and did lose pressure once the cam slid out, was probably my mistake. The phaser did line up with some adjusting. All in all, I replaced 24 rockers, lifters, and a LS Intake cam. Couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you!!

If down that far into the engine might as well replace parts that were due for 100,000 Maintenance miles anyway.

Just did this job and I'm glad I took MotorCity Mechanic's advice and to avoid the short cuts, the right way didn't add that much more time and thee tools can be had off Amazon for $15, shipped. One thing to note: on the back (firewall side) of each cam, there are silver grease like stripes all around the back of the cams, careful you don't wipe them off or smear them, this is for the camshaft position sensors that are mounted to the top of the valve covers. Also, replace all rockers and lifters on both the passenger side and drivers side. I almost didn't replace the drivers side since I did not detect any sound coming from it, just the passenger side. After pulling all the rockers from the drivers side, one rocker bearing had a very slight "wiggle", it was on it's way out. Replace all the lifters as well, when I pulled all the lifters, one of them fell apart as I removed it, it was a lifter under one of the bad rockers and it looked good just sitting in place.

Well... these past three days have been nerve racking and tedious to say the least but, I managed to rebuild the top end of our cars engine. The main symptom was a ticking or tapping noise. This was caused by the rocker arms going bad and destroying one camshaft. The list of parts replaced are... Right exhaust camshaft (the most difficult to access and most expensive) 24- Rocker Arms (Melling brand) 24- Lifters (Mopar) NGK Iridium spark plugs MSD Coils 8 hole fuel injectors Lower air intake (upgraded PUG version) All new gaskets and seals Thermostat PCV Valve Oil change I’m tired... think I’ll go eat tacos and rest now.

Thank you for this detailed video. You saved me a lot of money because I was about to take it to a shop. I am not a mechanic but I learned enough from your videos that I felt confident enough to do the job. I did all 24 Rockers and Lifters and replaced both right cam shafts. Thanks to your video that explains when to replace the cams. The special tools didn’t work but I made due. I did it in two days had to wait for the 2nd cam shaft to be ordered. We got it done. She’s running just fine. I can’t thank you enough

This video was an amazing help. I was going to attempt one of the "shortcut" methods before I found this. Got the tools I needed for under $20, and fixed my rocker tick. A bit intimidating removing cam shafts, but take your time and be thorough and it is surprisingly easy to do right. A million thanks to you for making this tutorial, easily saved me thousands of dollars.

Hi David. Thanks a lot for this tutorial and all your videos. I've never seen videos with such a high level of technical knowledge and pedagogy. You're the best dude! Carry on! Just a little challenge I faced when disassembling cylinder head covers on my 2016 Wrangler JK : camshaft sensors (which are not part of the engine you used in the video) should be removed before taking off cylinder head covers. No toque specs seems to be given by Mopar for reinstalling those sensors (I put 10NM as they're M8 bolts)
