Those final moments of episode 24 are to me is the saddest in the entire show. The sunset marking the end of the crews time together, Spike and Jet eating quietly with plates set for five, Ed taking one last look before happily running off, all while that song plays. It so somber yet beautiful on so many levels. To Ed it's a lot easier to see people come and go because she's young and free spirited. She might not even see this as a true farewell but an until next time. But to Spike, Jet and the audience we know that we may never see her again and it's heartbreaking. Perfectly showing how when your older, it's a lot harder for people to get close and leave without leaving scars. The start of a new adventure for Ed but the end is near for bebop crew and our time with them.

Ed is not a tragic character herself. Her arc is, however, heartbreaking. Thematically throughout the series, each main character ventures off at various points to explore their own backstories and thus, their motives. Faye seeks understanding of who she once was in hopes of finding a community, or at least a better version of herself than the chain smoking, gambling con artist she's had to become to survive a world she was thrust into. Jet must close the book on a love lost and accept reality as it is, that both his partner and his former lover either betrayed him or left him behind for a different life. Spike chases the ghosts of a past that haunts him, attempting to rewrite or rectify history and hanging on to the slimmest of hopes that a happy life with Julia could work. Ed's lone solo adventure? An effort to find food for the team and make the people she loves happy. The other three are embroiled in their past, of which Ed isn't burdened by at such a young age. She lives strictly for the present, a child-like trait that ultimately leads her to view a careless, absentee father with optimism and love that isn't deserved. Ed's father does not remember where he left her years ago, questions his memory of his own child's gender and at the first sign of a selfish desire (the meteor landing), he abandons Ed without hesitation once again immediately after being reunited from a 7-year absence. Yet, one understands the desire to seek love from a toxic family member, especially considering Ed has lived her life without a blood relative present. The tragedy of Ed is two-fold, in that we can foresee a future of happy-go-lucky Ed being repeatedly disappointed by her father until she becomes jaded and cold like the rest of the Bebop crew, and that her desire to be loved by her shitty father is what pulls her away from her true family, the Bebop crew themselves. Beauty lies in the optimism and potential of youth, however. Even though the end of session 24 brings me to tears every time as I hope Ed will turn back and race into the arms of the Bebop crew with Ein nipping at her heels, it's an emotional high note feeling like she is setting sail on the adventure of growing up and trailblazing her own story. We just feel hollow at the same time, wishing she was doing so alongside Jet, Faye and Spike too. =( See you, cowgirl, someday, somewhere!
@alancastillo79323 жыл бұрын
Fantastically written analysis! I feel the same way for her and hope she's better off somewhere.
@trustmeits610pm22 жыл бұрын
I don't think Ed is bothered by her fathers absence in the least. Nor will she ever be later in life, I think. It isn't her youth that prevents her from being angry at her father, it's her worldview in general. You're projecting values onto a very strange person who definitely 100% does not see the world the way you or I do. Ed is... unique... mentally. As is her father. For Ed, her eccentricity is only charming/annoying and doesn't interfere with her living a full life. For her dad, the 'family madness' seems to be a prison. She tricks everyone into tracking him down (suggesting she could have found him at any time.) Yet her motivation is straightforward and simple. To say hi to him and introduce her friends. That's it. No revenge. Not so much as a dirty look. She has a brief but very joyful reunion with him (suggesting their relationship is positive) and then they part ways. Likely Ed will track him down again to say "Hi" at some point in the future, with no ill will towards him at all. The woman who runs the orphanage obviously thinks he's a terrible father (for good reason) but Ed's dad is just as strange and abnormal as his daughter is. You call his desires selfish. Can a crazy person be selfish? I'm not sure anything the insane do can be attributed to normal emotions and desires. The world they inhabit is not the one we do. The man makes useless maps that must be constantly updated on a daily(?) basis. I doubt anyone is buying them. What would be the point? Yet he pursues it obsessively, dedicating his entire life to it. He obviously loves his daughter but can't seem to focus on her (or anything besides his maps) for very long. Which suggests mental illness rather than willful abusiveness. There's obviously a story behind how such a nutcase had a child to begin with and why he is the way he is, but the mystery is part of Ed's appeal and it definitely wasn't meant to be solved. Mr. Appledairy(?) handing Spike his ass in a fight with hilarious ease adds further to the mystery. It leaves the audience wondering: "Who the hell is this guy? He's a badass. Why is he also such a nut?" We're not meant to know though, only wonder. For all we know that guy isn't even really Ed's dad, just some guy she arbitrarily decided should be. It would still be in-character for her.

I think the show heavily implies that the main reason of her behaviour is the fact that she grew up mostly alone. No one taught her how to act like a "normal" person, so she just formed her personality in a way she wanted. She's not worrying about anything, she just enjoys life, like children do. But in real life, children go to school, starts having responsibilities, etc. and grows out from this phase. But in the world of Cowboy Bebop, it's not how it works, at least for Ed, who never had to face these things.

Eds English voice actress did an incredible job. I praise her performance up and down, and wouldn't change it for the world. Its a staple in my nostalgia and present praise. But I had this dream a few days ago, it was like a regular Cowboy Bebop adventure, I was either Spike or Jet, maybe both, it was foggy, and with Faye and Ed on a mission. and Ed was speaking pure Japanese, and everyone could understand her except me, while they themselves were speaking in English. and no one else acknowledged she was speaking Japanese, there weren't subtitles or anything. So I'm struggling to do this mission while concealing my confusion, and having little to no idea of what Ed is saying. After I woke up, I started to wonder what the series would be like if Ed's voice acting were in Japanese while everyone else were in English. I think I might do an edit of just that for an episode.

i always like how ed served as a nice contrast, a childlike innocence among the cloud of gloom onboard the bebop. she's not bound by her past like the rest of them (or ABSENCE of a past in the case of faye) and when she leaves you can immediately tell that things are going to get much more serious, and much darker. and indeed they do.
