What I’ve always loved about this episode is the gender of the Roman commander is not a part of the story at all. Obviously the chair spin was played up to make it a surprise that the commander was a female, but from that point Kirk simply treats her as the Roman Commander and so does the story. There’s no preaching, no speeches about what a strong woman she is, she just is without having to say anything about it and we eventually stop even thinking about it, imagine that? Even when she’s on the Enterprise bridge in an evening dress she still exudes authority and bearing without having to remind us. Modern TV could learn something from that.
@davidgradwell88302 күн бұрын
Also, consistent with their introduction in "Balance of Terror," the Romulans aren't painted as one-dimensional, moustache-twirling villains; they are very honorable people, whose priorities are simply in conflict with ours. in fact, you could argue that our crew are the bad guys! Star Trek boldly took a radical storytelling approach here, defying the norms of 1960s TV. It also reflected the growing public sentiment against the Vietnam War, where we were starting to appear as the bad guys in public opinion--and the fact that this was based on the real-life Pueblo Incident was the smoking gun. Art imitates life!

Except for the whole plot thread about her finding Spock incredibly hot and trying to get into his pants, and him reciprocating the feeling.
@neneshubby2 күн бұрын
@@Serai3 That didn’t reduce her in my eyes at all. It wasn’t one of those episodes where she was ready to jeopardize her entire career over a man. Even her seducing of Spock was strategic.
@Serai3Күн бұрын
@@neneshubby Way to ignore the point. You claimed her gender didn't enter into the story at all, when in fact it's a major plot point. Don't gloss over a point when someone calls it out. That only makes you look weaselly.
@neneshubbyКүн бұрын
@@Serai3 Oh come on man, let’s keep things positive and not get personal. You disagree with my post, that’s fine. We can all watch an episode and one person gets one message from it and another person gets a different one. There’s no right or wrong or good or bad. It’s just how you see it. Let’s just agree this is a really cool episode, I mean we’re all Star Trek fans here so we can get different messages from an episode.

Alexxa, I'll assist: The Commander's unofficial name, which is accepted by most of Trek fandom is Liviana Charvanek, played by Joanne Linville. Years later her nearly identical daughter Amy Rydell later reprised her mother's role as the Romulan Commander, Liviana Charvanek for the fan series Star Trek Continues two-part finale, "To Boldly Go". I mentioned that series to you before. Cheers. Oh. Another thing came to mind. "Jumping" into a transporter beam like Charvanek did when she grabbed Spock is established (in something you haven't seen yet) to be very dangerous. The episode was inspired by the capture of USS Pueblo (AGER-2), an American spy ship, by North Korea. The Norks still have her to this day. Mostly McCoy isn't being a d1ck to Spock out of meaness. He genuinely believes his friend is missing out because he "sacrifices" his human side to live as a full Vulcan. Imagine a bi-racial Canadian or American who not only refuses to accept one half of their makeup but actually to an extent, despises one half or the other of themselves. Spock considers McCoy one of his two closest friends, his BFF being Kirk. McCoy feels the same about Spock but only ever open admits it on screen in something else you haven't seen before. Dee Kelly does manage to show it from time to time with is acting though.

This is how you do an episode with a female as commander. Wheras today it is just needlessly beaten over the heads of viewers. She wasn't judged or put on a pedistal. She was simply a commander equal to all those around her.

The captain and the crew are acting like they have never encountered a Romulan ship with a cloaking device before. Maybe Kirk should review the captain's log from Season 1 Balance of Terror LOL! Also, it's a good thing for Kirk that the Cloaking device looks like it weighs about as much a couch cushion. LOL!

I had a rare moment of joy watching you watch this episode for the first time. You were so worried about Captain Kirk’s mental health, about Spock’s treasonous acts, and then you had an epiphany. You realize that they were in cahoots and that it was all part of a plan. Your concern was just lovely. This is one of my favorite episodes of Star Trek and again thank you so much for letting us see you watch it for the first time.

Love it, it is indeed a great episode and this was a great video...is your shirt a reference to the mini-series/movie Roots, from the 80s, with LeVar Burton??? I didn't see it when it first came out, I'm too young (It came out 1977, I was born 78) but I saw it in repeats/syndication as a kid. Also there was a Roots: the Gift that was on the ABC broadcast TV network when I was 10, I remember seeing that. 🙂 ABC stands for American Broadcasting Company (a private company, not funded by the US Government) and is not to be confused with the Australian Broadcasting Company (which is Australia's version of the BBC, the American version being PBS for TV and NPR for radio)!! 🙂

For me what makes this one stand out is that, for once, our crew is on the offensive. Most of the time, they are reacting to an enemy's attack or intrusion. If I really wanted to get picky, though, there would be trained specialists doing this sort of job, not the captain or first officer of a starship. And only a madman would think that delivering one of the few Constitution-class starships left into the hands of Romulans was an acceptable risk in order to steal their latest model cloaking device. I mean, what if it turned out to be the size of a room? But I shouldn't knock it. It worked, didn't It?🤣

This is one of my favorite episodes of TOS, largely because of the Romulan Commander. She’s a badass. Compared to the modern way of writing a “strong woman”, this characterization is way more compelling. She lost, yes, for the sake of the story and who the heros are, but she could have easily won. And look at how progressive the Romulans are. She commands a fleet.

Alexxa, Star Trek Continues' "To Boldly Go" two-part series finale is highly recommended! It resolves the Spock/Female Romulan Commander--and Sub-Commander Tal!--story, and also ties up pretty much all the loose ends of the original series, while bringing that, er, star trek to a very satisfying conclusion! But please react to the Animated Series, next, then please react to both Star Trek New Voyages and Star Trek Continues (in that order) before advancing to the movies and The Next Generation. Peace!

This is probably TMI, but the finger dance between Spock and the Romulan Commander, is a form of sexual contact with Vulcans; as will be revealed later on in one of the movies. I showed my girlfriend how to do this and it really is quite stimulating, as Spoke stated. #JS. lol

I thought it also to point out that both movies and TV shows that involved spying and espionage, were very popular around this time, so the top show at this time was Mission Impossible, As well British TV spy show like The Avengers , were huge in the mid to late 60’s, as well the Prisoner, Hawaii Five-o and a few others.

It was something of an echo of the Bond films, too. You had several Bond cash-ins like the Flint and Matt Helm movies around the same time. They all rode that wave.

Oh totally. It sort of reminds me also of the campy craze that started with Batman 66 , shows like Irwin Allen’s lost in space, and voyage to the bottom of the sea had great first seasons, then they went all camp, with the writing, I had heard because of the popularity of Batman, Trek never went that route though.
