Love this review. I bought a 2.0 jtdm 170 bhp last month. Full black. Guess what? The guy who sold it to me took many pictures before I left, almost cried. That was the reason it was extremely cheap as a second hand car in 2015. I payed 11000€ for a full option (+30000€) 2.0 jtdm with 50000 km back then. That car had the same quality as his German rivals but looked 2 times sexier n cost 3 times cheaper. That was the deal for all those 147 and 159 models after 2010 Unfortunately the succes and rewards of the Giulia and Stelvio changed all that 😢 I bought mine as wedding car (didn’t wanted a rental) already have it 8 years now (195000km) and still love it. This car is a keeper . I call it the everyday Ferrari wich it actually is 😊

Beautiful car. I had the sports wagon in the exact same spec. Never missed a single beat and I did 135,000 miles from new. Seen a comment remarking how the 159 doesn't look old. That's because they didn't copy the current trends. The 159 still looks fresh.

I really liked this review! It is pretty accurate. And all the respect for you for not saying something like "These are unreliable/It will break down a lot/Alfa electrics" which is what most youtubers say about these, not really knowing what they are talking about. I've owned a 159 2.4 for 6,5 years now, and the car has 228k miles/367k km on the clock. There have been no electrical faults, except heated seat elements had to be replaced(they break if you push on the seat with your knee) +alternator and starter were replaced(normal wear). The driving experience is still delightful every time, you are already waiting for the next trip, even if it was just commuting. The 159 also got a very good Euro NCAP rating back in the day and has stability control. The quick hydraulic power steering, good chassis and brakes have been very useful in bad weather conditions(have experience of snowy/icy roads, avoiding moose etc.). One very happy owner here😃

I once owned a Guigiaro designed Alfetta GTS - the 1600 engined GTV. It was a joy to drive, but an unreliable rustbucket! I now have a 159 tbi which is the most reliable car I have owned in 43 years of motoring. It has sailed through every MoT with only an occasional minor advisory like led bulb flickering. It is also fun to drive and it is remapped - to exceed Giulietta WV spec - plus I had the M32 gearbox bearings and end case upgraded. As you say, it is such a good looking car - a real head turner! - it will take an awful lot to make me replace it, it has been a better drive and more reliable vehicle than my previous Audi, Mercedes, Mazdas and Hondas, not to mention Ford, Rover, Triumph, Hillman and Austin! Well done, Alfa.

@@WeBlogAnyCar my wife described the exhaust note of that GTS twin cam under hard acceleration as like “ball bearings being sucked up a powerful hoover with a metal hose”!!! It looked fantastic, drove brilliantly with the engine at the front and gearbox, clutch, diff and inboard discs at the rear - near 50/50 weight distribution. Sadly after a few years the wheel arches looked like a lace handkerchief. Thank you for your reply.

Your wife’s description of the exhaust note is “spot on”. That is a brilliant way to describe the sound. Such a great sound from Alfa’s of that era and before. It was and is such a shame about the body panels and rust 🤷🏾‍♂️.

They are a beautiful machine. I have a red 2.4 Ti. Not perfect, but when it's sitting there glinting in the sun and looking like an automotive supermodel, you forgive it. And the diesel is a torque monster. Nothing else looks or feels like it. Great for a solo long distance journey.

@@WeBlogAnyCar It is an often overlooked fact that Alfa got their quality control right with the 159 - they did after all headhunt the man in charge of BMW's M series cars at the time to work for them on the 159. As a result, regular servicing and preventative maintenance make the 159 an extremely reliable car. Just take the diesel for an "italian tune" regularly to keep the DPF happy!

Yeah the build quality was an improvement. I guess many of the cars from that era have the same issues with DPF’s etc and like you say take it for an “Italian tune” . They need to be driven. 👍🏾

Just bought a 1.9jtdm TI in alfa red with tan leather. I have done 1500 miles in 4 weeks going nowhere in particular, i love driving it and have to look over my shoulder evertime i walk away from it. I think the top gear boys were right!!

I have exact same spec 10 plate, but I have the even rarer Sportwagon version. The car gets lots of attention and I do get compliments about the car. Where I have found it to be at it's best is on the motorway. I think it's a superb motorway cruiser, because people notice the car and move over most obligingly to let you overtake them, just so they can have a look at the car, which means I can cruise nicely at the speed limit. I've even had a 4C and a Stelvio Quadrifoglio move over. The other bonus is the rarity - prices for these cars have been going up recently.

Hi Yas Z, first I’d like to thank you for taking the time to watch my video and your encouraging kind words. I will try and answer your questions the best I can. For me my own car has to be something more than just a vehicle that gets me from “A to B”. It has to be pleasing on the eye, engaging to drive and connect with me on an emotional level. Alfa’s, in general definitely, do this for me. You said you don’t know much about cars? I would suggest taking along a good mechanic or knowledgable car person (with good, mechanical knowledge) that you trust. Get a full online HPI report (other companies are available) carried out on it, check all the paper work, maintenance stamps and receipts for servicing etc. If you don’t know of a good mechanic than pay for an independent inspection to be carried out on the car you are interested in. It will highlight any issues or potential issues. Another route (which can cost you more) is to buy from an independent Alfa Romeo sales specialist with a warranty or try the Alfa Romeo owners club classified to see if there are any for sale. These vehicles are typically cherished by their owners and been well looked after. 👍🏾

I feel stressed out every time i hear someone talking about the increasing rarity of these cars. I own a 156 1.8 twin spark TI and I love it. My dream is to own a 156 2.5l v6 saloon, but they are almost gone or becoming sooo expensive. I'd love to own both a 156 and 159 but i cannot afford having 2 cars, that need quite a bit of attention, just for the hell of it. Stresses me out... Because the time, when there are almost none reasonable ones left is almost here :(

I owned a 159 2.0 JTDM TI in Stromboli Grey for 6 years, ex dem from main dealer, loved the car more than my wife. Trouble was every time it went into the garage which was pretty frequent it cost at least £500 and that was a small independent guy who wasn't a rip off. I now have a Lexus, boring as hell but extremely reliable

I’m 19 I’m gonna upgrade my Toyota Corolla 1.4 petrol for the 1.8 mpi lusso Alfa, they so nice to drive and so rare yet insurance is group 18 so not very low but miles lower than bmw saloons. My gran doesn’t want me to have anything with a bit of acceleration but tough she got a v6 Mercedes’ slk… I got a better track record then her too 😂😂 shhhhh 😂😂

Alfas were notorious for issues with electronics up until 159, for which they switched from Magneti Marelli to Bosch (just about the time "high quality" Mercedes switched from Bosch to Marelli😮, and started having all sort of issues). For last 4 years I have a 2007 159 1.9jtdm. Never had any switch, button or electronic component acted out once. But even if it did, I would forgive her because as soon as you push the button to start the engine & furn the steering wheel you feel it's something special, focused and driver orientated. And when you find nice twisty road...it's poetry in motion.

The engine is german Opel A20DTH, it is very very good

The engine came from the FIAT common rail; the first car to mount it was the AR 156; since in those years FIAT had agreements with GM, it sold its diesel engines and fitted the revised a 2.2 GM Holden for the 159. The 1.9 is a robust and powerful engine that has a range of use like a petrol engine, that is, you can also use it at high revs

A great looking car. However as a serial Alfa Romeo owner I don't really consider them a proper Alfa. Its mechanically a GM product. It doesn't feel even remotely like an Alfa of old to drive. The steering feel is nice but otherwise they feel heavy, not very reactive to drive and just nowhere near as fun as the old 156. The only one I'd buy again would be a 2.4 diesel.

I will say that it feels a million miles away from how a Vauxhall/Opel Insignia drives but you are right that they don’t feel as light and responsive to drive compared to the 156 especially if it was a 2.0 TS Veloce which was my favourite to drive back in the early 2000’s. 😀

It's not exactly a GM product. It has the same kind of suspension of Ferrari and Maserati...it looks like a super car, and it makes u feel like u are in a super car...except for the sound and the reactivity of the engine and the heavy weight, as u pointed out. But the look will always be the best an Alfa saloon had, with the 164...other saloon cars are boring to see compared to these two. 156 rocks, except for the poor plastic quality of the interior,unfortunately. Anyway, if u want a real 100% Alfa, then you have to stop at the alfa 75 and SZ.

Given the type of car that it is, I think you missed a major trick by not giving it some across some real driving roads. I'd wager 90%+ of ppl buying Alfas are whats termed as 'spirited' drivers....back to testing Mondeos im afraid for you 😉
