Most times if you just grab the tray and pull it you'll break the tabs that hold it in. You got lucky. Correct procedure is to remove the radio first.

Thanks for the "fatherly" words of advice there. About to attempt to do the same, (sort of) and am not a fan of easier quicker ways, if indeed, as you say, it may cause damage. I'll remove the Radio the old fashionded way, with via a steel coat hanger adequitely shaped.
