Thank you for this video! In my eyes, the Montreal is one of the most beautiful Alfa Romeos ever built. The fact that this car remained the only V8 Alfa Romeo up until the release of the 8C, renders the Montreal even more special to me. And that sound... I can‘t help but love it. If I ever get to own one, I‘ll give you a call ;)! Beauties like this are meant to be driven and not to be rotting in a museum. Cheers.

I first drove a Montreal back in late 70s. My friend had managed to import one into California which to this day I still don't know how he did it as they weren't legal in US back than. It was the same color as the one in the video. At the same time I had a 1969-70 ALFA duetto round tail spider that I bought new (kept it for over 40 years). I finally sold it to a collector to gain garage space for my 2015 ALFA 4C Launch Edition bought new also. The old spider had modded engine, trans, differential, suspension, the works and despite track days and autocrosses was concourse condition. If I had the space I would have both cars. Things I remember about the Montreal....it was quite familiar to me as it had the same Spica mechanical injection as the US cars (needed to make smog legal) and the engine was based on many parts shared with my 1750 it seemed.. Brakes seemed a bit lacking, and it definitely was more of a GT car as the extra weight made it a lot less "toss-able" compared to my spider. Was a nice touring car. It was a very nice looking car and seemed pretty solid. There is a member in my AROC here in Michigan that has a Montrealo identical to yours that he bought in Australia when he lived there and upon retiring brought it to the US. It is a right hand drive car since it was sold in Australia. He has gone through his car and it is concourse now. His is still stock...with no upgrades as far as I know. By the way my old spider was very reliable and my new 4C has been problem free and of course an absolute blast to drive. I have had many other cars in my 72 years....but ALFAs are the only ones that are long term keepers. I always wonder how UK owners keep any car from rusting away....seems like many I see in videos and TV shows have a lot of rust. Guess the ocean proximity doesn't help. My old ALFA didn't have a spot of rust on it and all original upholstery, dash board cover and door cards that were spotless. Keeping in a garage and keeping spotlessly clean is the secret....and on my 4C not having a steel body ;-) Keep up the videos....we ALFA fanatics love them.
@TheAlfaNut
@TheAlfaNut 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for watching Bob and for your comments! I agree with you about rust prevention being better than cure, however UK Alfa nuts spend quite a lot of time lying under our cars in overalls, scraping rust and painting on goop! My “keepers” are garaged and never driven in wet or salty conditions. (Yes UK road are salted through the Winter 😕). Hope you enjoy the upcoming stuff, some of it is covering “daily” Alfas but I also have some more interesting stuff in the pipeline. 👍🏻

Excellent video and on my favorite Alfa Romeo. While not the fastest or the rarest, it is an icon of that era. I love it’s unique styling lines. I do own an Alfa, but it’s a 2018 Giulia. Not quite as rare but where I live in the the USA, you don’t see many on the roads.

Thanks for watching Martyn - I think it's actually my favourite Alfa too (or a tie with the 33 Stradale?). Well done for driving a Giulia too of course, it's a really pretty car and nicely understated (unusual for an Alfa! ;0) I'm definitely getting one for my next daily driver.

The Alfa Nut I have a 2.0 petrol 280hp version and it’s all I really need! Pity it only comes with auto transmission here but I have the paddle shifters at least. Fast enough for fun but not stupidly powerful. Drives like a “magic carpet”, smooth and silky, with nice handling. It does turn eyes here and several people have asked me “what kind of car is that?”. :)
@TheAlfaNut

@@martynh5410 It's a great car - I test drove a Veloce last year but ended up buying a different company car due to the high level of tax payable on petrol turbo cars here in the UK! So - I'm opting out of the company car scheme next year and buying a Giulia! Life is too short not to drive what you want.

@@martynh5410 I have a Veloce as well and I love it! The electronics can be a bit finicky, but who cares about them anyway? This car is made for the road, a long, winding country road, where you can enjoy the superb engine, transmission and handling, zip through corners, fly past Porsches (Porsche drivers can't drive these days) and have fun while doing it in style! It is also brilliant on the Autobahn due to its power and low weight. Definitely the best car I ever had and an absolute joy! I also test drove the Quadrifoglio, but it was a bit too much for me at the time, I had to get used to an Alfa first. But the QV is definitely on the list for my next car!

KZbin suggested this and I'm glad it did. Way back in the mid-70s (I was about 10) went with my parents to pick up the new (actually not quite new) family car. It was a Fiat 132 but in NZ Fiat/Alfa/Lancia/Ferrari were all combined dealers. I vividly remember the car featured in the main showroom display, a bright orange Alfa Montreal. I always liked Italian cars (others in the family had 850/124 Coupé) but those two cars probably set me on a lifetime of only owning Italians, in my case Fiat/Abarth! Subscribed!

Cheers from Michigan! What a beautiful video about my favorite car - one of the best narrations and a love story. Mine started 50 years ago, saw Hans Stuck driving the same orange one close to my school in Munich in the seventies. Drove the first in the eighties, but couldn’t afford. Then bought mine early nineties in Switzerland - was originally orange. Managed good Autobahn speeds at 230 km/h. Ten years ago I brought her to US. And when you released the video, that day I replaced my points the first time in almost 50 years. We even share black leather seats and for sure a good driving style. Enjoy her. Mine is NOT for sale- my daughters are next in line! Thanks for posting.

THANK YOU. The first Montreal I ever witnessed personally was sometime in the very early 1980’s at an Alfa Club meet at the Brooks Stevens Auto Museum in Mequon, Wisconsin. She was in utterly perfect factory condition, and in that lurid primary green that only the 1970’s could ever give us... I could not get over the partially-veiled headlamps...that series of B-pillar vents...and the clustering of all gauges into those two cannon-like instrument tubes...my young mind could not process a more exotic ground-rocket than this! Gandini...standing ovation! I was blessed to visit the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo in Arese, Italy in 2017, where I saw my 2nd Montreal (the factory-owned orange example much like your tester) but also the Prototipo...developed for ‘Expo ‘67’ in Montreal! Dreams realized..! (PS : I did convince my parents to choose a new Peugeot 505STI by age 14...sorry...the US never got the Montreal unless one knew some ‘special colleagues..!’)

The Alfa Nut Arese is an amazing museum...but for us Alfa Nutters, make sure to take a drive behind the Museum-proper and explore the industrial estate just beyond; much of the original Arese plant has been leveled for Italy’s largest shopping-mall ‘Il Centro’...but much of the Alfa infrastructure still survives... (I understand it’s a great mall, too...Everything!) I can’t think of a better channel to air your Alfa-Centric urban-explorations on...and obviously Arese will always be an Alfisti-spelunking fantasy! Gain access...one way or another?

Even if it’s considered a valuable gt it was a sum of mistakes 1) Alfa Romeo had a state-of-the-art car ready... Berlinetta sperimentale Osi with 1,6 Giulia engine: it was enough to update it... 2) Gandini designed a beautiful bodywork for Bertone BUT shaped for a central rear-engined car ( like the Miura ) but the engine is front . 3) six long years passed before the project was realized it means when the front-engined GT were set, aged... a car born already aged ...so sad...

One of those cars you wish were more widely available and affordable. Here in the USA, let's say Ford had bought this design from Bertone / Gandini. Then let's say they executed it so it looked exactly the same as this car inside and out, but used their own contemporary Windsor V8 and other running gear. They could have called it a Mustang, would have sold hundreds of thousands of them for reasonable prices, and lots of us could now have one. Sigh.

I came across one of these sitting in a small used car lot in LA and a little later another in an even smaller used car lot in a small New England city sometime in the early 80's.(what were the chances?) I knew what they were (I'd survived ownership of a 2000 GTV a few years earlier, and seen Remie Juilen drive one in an otherwise forgettable movie) but my right brain over-ruled my left brain both times. I've had mixed feelings about that ever since. The exhaust note alone would have been worth the asking price.

In my humble opinion, no car has ever needed a better wheel/tyre spec than the Montreal… the original has never sat well to my eye, it’s a little Italian muscle car without the muscle. I’ve seen Montreals sat alongside mustangs and despite looking way better than the stang, it never looked muscley… so if it were mine, I’d garage the original wheels and throw on a contemporary set of slightly wider wheels front and rear and maybe go up 1 inch in diameter, with a lower profile wider tyre… nothing too crazy maybe just an inch at the rear and 1/2 at the front… then it would be a very muscley looking unit.
