I love this band to death. Ian, Sean, Jake and Brendan will always have a special place in my heart. Holy Ghost makes me cry every single time I listen to it. Every single time. I'm incredibly biased because that album was the soundtrack to my most tumultuous mental health years, and knowing the story behind it and why each part is so raw (especially Brendan's) and different to their past albums, coupled with the explosively melancholy performances always brings a sense of catharsis that make me cry tears of defeat and pride all mixed into one gross cocktail. The timeline of their albums and the issues they explore could honestly be a movie; a bunch of sad highschoolers who don't fit in start making music about girls who don't love them back, suddenly getting hit with the toughest experiences of their lives and the way it breaks them, only for them to remold themselves is such a touching tale of maturity it would fit right in with a classic 90's coming-of-age movie. But instead it's a three album (with a smattering of singles and EP's and splits) sonic experience that is so real it becomes uncomfortable. I think the reason this MoBo "character arc" always chokes me up at the end is that I listened to these albums at roughly the same age the guys in the band were when they put them out, and each one ended up being a soundtrack so perfect for my own high-school coming of age experience that by the time Holy Ghost rocked around, I didn't feel alone even when I continually isolated myself from my friends and family. I didn't feel alone in wanting to end it all, and I didn't feel alone in feeling out of touch and distant from everyone around me. At first I just clung onto those words, "I'm a waste of time and space" and would ignore the rest of the bands message out of sheer stubbornness and not wanting to get better. But eventually I did, and Brendan's vocal performance on the last leg of the album with the rest of the band playing as passionately as they do with as much chemistry as they do always brings me to tears, because it chips away at that iceberg of stubbornness every single time. And I've listened to it so many times the vinyl is basically unusable. It chipped away at that iceberg so much I started to reach out to my friends and family and counselors to help me chip away the rest, and I did in the end. For me now, MoBo's "character arc" and specifically Holy Ghost will always continue to make me ball my eyes out, but now it's mostly out of pride, both in those sweet sweet Midwestern boys, and myself. Thank you MoBo. Thank you. (Also thought I would mention that the reason Holy Ghost is such a flurry is because Brendan had to write his half of the album in like a week to make the deadline, they flow into each other because honestly it's basically one big stream-of-consciousness thought, which for me I really like and prefer to the previous two albums)

They played a surprise set in Philly once just because they wanted to give Weatherbox, one of their influences, a good show. I cannot say enough good things about MoBo. I absolutely love them, and it's funny, that whenever I listen to their music, I get ideas of my own for songs. Brendan Lukens is absolutely precious and someone who I can relate to on a personal level, and having watched the Tripping In the Dark doc before Holy Ghost, I was devastated to hear his breakdown came after the Say Anything tour, because I also love Say Anything and Max Bemis, and knowing Max's personal history as well. From a songwriting standpoint I think that Jake is basically the same as me, to a point where I've actually said as much in tweets, but Bren's straight-and-to-the-point style is one that I find the easiest to pick up of the two in terms of my own songs. You're Gonna Miss it All was my intro to the group, but I have a TON of nostalgia packed into Holy Ghost with the fact that my mental state was very similar to that album's, and the fact that I would spend bus trips in Ireland alternating back and forth between it and Blond by Frank Ocean. (I'm still mad that the title track isn't longer, but honestly adore the difference between the down tempo Holy Ghost and fast paced, bouncy Wedding Singer. Thank you for this video. Must go binge them again.

I think a great way to see the growth of the band is comparing songs Coals & Hiding. These two songs were written by Jake and are essentially a time capsule of his mindset at these two times. Coals was written before Jake headed to college and showed his optimistic outlook towards the future. On the other hand, Hiding was written when Jake had just finished college and showed his now pessimistic headspace and his how even places he loved became vexing to be at because of the memories he has there. Hiding was my all-time favourite song of theirs because of how the song changes and grows along with Jakes lyrical talents.
