Nice Ranking. It’s great to hear a video talking about Hitchcock’s silent films. I don’t hear people talk about those films much. I actually just watched Pleasure Garden. I thought it was great. Very good story and the dog was fun. I watched The Lodger a few months back. That was great as well. I enjoyed The Farmers Wife quite a bit but I feel it needed a half hour cut out. I’ve only seen the talkie version of Blackmail and I thought that was great as well. Still need to see the others

First! My favorite is the lodger.

No doubt The Lodger is the most Hichcockian of his silent films.

Easy Virtue is only available on BluRay in France for some reason. Also according to Brent Reid the movie is actually partially lost. Only 69 of the 94 min exists in 16mm prints.

I'll admit, the only 2 films from the list I thought were good were The Lodger and Blackmail. The other ones really didn't hold up to me as well. I think the Lodger is what most people rank as his #1 Silent Film, and I agree with that, even though I don't exactly rank it as high as the big movies: North By Northwest, Psycho, Vertigo and Rear Window. I might rank it as high as the Birds, The Lodger was definitely a good Hitchcock film.

The Ring is actually pretty great. I really enjoyed it. I can agree with your analysis about Jack being oblivious and his wife Mable being a cheater who doesn't deserve him. I think the moral is about focusing on your career at the expense of your personal life. The whole story was pretty entertaining for me.

I've already watched this video 2 years ago when you uploaded it, but back then I haven't seen all of Hitchcock's silent films. As I am now (re-)watching every single film Hitchcock directed in chronological order, I have finally watched all of his silent films, so here's my take on them: 9: Champagne It has quite a silly plot and I didn't like any of the characters in it, especially the protagonist's boyfriend who's sole purpose is it to quarrel with her, which gets really annoying, unfortunately. The twist at the end was also pretty stupid, by the way. 8. Easy Virtue This was really frustrating to watch because there are just so many unfortunate things happening to the main character and she doesn't deserve any of them. Plus, it drags a bit. However, it has one of Hitchcock's best silent film moments, in which a marriage is proposed on a phone call and you only see the operator and her cheerful reaction to it instead of using any title cards. 7. The Manxman A rather boring plot and I agree with you, the worst aspect about this film is its protagonist. I've already disliked the actor in "The Ring", but in this film he's even worse. However, I liked the island setting and it has one of the best shots in all of Hitchcock's silent filmography, in which a girl is running over a hill and, in the background, the sun is rising but half obscured by a cloud, which looks beautiful. 6. The Pleasure Garden There exists a remastered version of this film, but unfortunately, it has only been released in theatres yet in 2012, I believe, and not on home video. Besides that, I thought the first three quarters of the film were rather uninteresting, however, the last 15 minutes are great and, as you said, purely Hitchcockian. 5. The Ring I thoroughly enioyed this film. I liked the boxing sequences, there is some interesting camera work going on in it and it was pretty creatively edited together. However, as you said, the female main character is just so unlikeable and thus I didn't like the ending, too. Also, the comic relief who is the same actor as the protagonist's father in "Champagne" and the protagonist's gardener (?) in "The Farmer's Wife" was really unfunny and annoying. 4. The Farmer's Wife It had a few moments where I had to chuckle, witty dialogue, a great leading role and, as you said, a really touching ending. The only things I have to complain about are that the film drags in a few scenes and, once again, I loathed the comic relief in this film - I just can't stand that actor. 3. Downhill I thought this film is really well directed, it has some interesting camera angles, nice editing work and a very enchanting dream sequence (I think, Hitchcock is not only the Master of Suspense, but also the Master of Dream Sequences). The plot itself wasn't that enthralling, but I absolutely love Ivor Novello as the leading actor! 2. Blackmail Honestly, I couldn't really understand why this film ranks so low on your list. I have watched the talkie version, so maybe you should check that out in order to enjoy it more because I really like this film. The first half was very atmospheric and also quite disturbing because it dealt with an attempted rape, which is a pretty heavy topic for that time. I agree with you, the blackmailing aspect of it was rather lousily executed, but the ending was spectacular and I love the final shot of the film (in case you've forgotton, it has something to do with a painting); it has this sort of eerie touch to it. 1. The Lodger Well, I guess this is no big surprise. I agree with everything you said in your video. The only thing I disliked about this film was the ending; it was a bit rushed and kinda unsatisfying, but that is a minor complaint. By the way, I am curious of what you think of the cameo in this film. Of course, we have this somewhat famous cameo with Hitchcock sitting at a desk with his back to the camera, but there is also a second unconfirmed cameo by the end of the film, in which some people (including Francois Truffaut) think to have spotted Hitchcock among the crowd of people chasing the lodger. This segment is also included in most of the Hitchock cameo compilation videos, but it was never officially confirmed and I personally doubt that the little stout man seen there is actually Hitchcock because his face looks so distinct, as seen in the remastered version of the film. What do you think about that? Anyway, these are my thoughts on Hitchcock's silent films. I loved seeing your ranking and am looking forward to new videos. Keep up the good work, man!

Thank you so much for the ranking. I enjoyed reading your explanations. I’ve always thought that was him in the crowd of people. Check it Hitchcock Cameo video, I reference it there too.
