I think this piece is beautiful. It makes me tear up and I’m not really sure why. Maybe it’s the fact that something like this actually happened in real life and it wasn’t simply a work of fiction. To think people can be compassionate enough to temporarily stop a war just gives me hope.

It moves me that an actual event from long ago was put into Music. On Christmas Eve 1914, the British and French were at war with Germany, then under the governance of Kaiser Wilhelm II. The war took place because Wilhelm wanted his “place in the sun.” He wanted to occupy as much of Europe as possible, most notably France. That Christmas Eve, both sides agreed to put down their arms to celebrate Christmas together. On the day after two sides extended their truce to grieve and bury their dead. Shortly after, the soldiers on both sides, despite showing some humanity, were treated as traitors by their own countries.
