The real story is that a single german came up first, Not the British. After they had to go back to their trenches, in which they did not want to fight. The final decision was made and they were then replaced. It's pretty sad that the Politicians wanted to make them fight whereas the war could've possibly ended then and there. Edit: Almost the 1 year anniversary since I wrote this comment, Happy Christmas.
@MARTINA852025 жыл бұрын
TDFodZ as far as I have read, the trench line was way too long to exactly determine who came first. People from one side saw the other but might have not seen their side in which someone could have come out. This is probably why different sources say different things about who came up first.
@MARTINA852025 жыл бұрын
TDFodZ also about what you said about the politicians, I read that after this they put the head soldiers and the soldiers that participated to the truce “to die”. Allegedly they moved them to battles that they knew they were going to loose, in the front lines as well, purposely to make sure they wouldn’t survive. They didn’t want people to know about what happened, -they also tried to stop the letters they wrote to their relatives about it, but they couldn’t control some that were already sent. The story was already out, because those were the proofs.

Emotional, yes and teary eyed. Not sad though. We often criticise ourselves calling war ‘human nature’. I believe that nature itself is brutal and cruel and it is our ‘human nature’ that gives us the courage to resist these base instincts. Setting aside hatred and despair for the sake of love and hope. No story I can think of across human history encapsulates this quite like Christmas 1914. In the darkness of that winter our light shone through. Don’t feel sad for such an instance, despite all the horror of that war and the fallen whom we will always remember, this moment in time will never be forgotten. Feel joy and comfort that there is hope for us yet.

Not really, during the Christmas truce some people used it as a chance as sabotage and were untrustworthy of each other, including an incident where German caroling was ordered to be drowned out by British gunfire and artillery. But not every sector was like this, even Indians made peace with the Germans on Christmas, although none of the Indians knew or cared about Christmas, the lit bonfires reminded them of Diwali, and some Germans led Indians out of the trenches with Cigars and smokes.

I was in the advert and now nearly seven years on i still think this was one of the highlights of the centenary. We had a hard but rewarding time making this film. Most of the cast were reenactors, WW1 enthusiasts or serving or former British military. Yet i do not understand the hated at times. The events in the advert are an honest recreation of the events at Wulverghem on Christmas day 1914 between the 16th Bavarian reserve regiment and the 1st Norfolk's and C coy of the 6th Cheshire's where there really was an informal kickabout between the British and German soldiers.

Check for the episodes featuring Lord Flasheart tho Rik Mayalls acting is not for the faint hearted ( check " the Young ones" and "Bottom" series for more of that brilliant comic) As for that final part - it's in the top ten of most memorable moments on TV in the 20th C for a reason, and it's surely one of the best I've ever seen. The Christmas Truce was a beautiful thing, but sadly the war did wear these men down. The following year, commanding officers strictly forbade any enemy fraternisation and from 1916 there was no suggestion of any truces. By this point loss of life had been too enormous and the use of poison gas made both sides bitter against the other.

Grenade express What’s funny is a lot of the soldiers in WW1 would sometimes just mingle while they’re shooting each other and barter for cigarettes. Historians have called the Christmas truce of 1914 "the last moment on the 19th century". The event is an example of the kind of belief in human beings inner goodness and decency that was common in 19th century culture (as the soldiers on both sides dared to assume that the enemy would be decent enough not to take the opportunity to attack once the opposition had their guard down). After the horrors of Word War 1, in fact DUE to the horrors of World War 1, this belief in human decency was forever lost among the majority, and replaced with a sense of cynicism and an idea that there is no limit to humans capacity for evil. This is seen for instance in how about two decades later, during World War 2, a few soldiers during a few separate occasions tried to initiate the same kind of Christmas truce that had occured in 1914, but these attempts were always futile; most of the time the soldier who tried to initiate it was immediately killed by the enemy. By that point, our modern time had begun, and there was no room left in such a cynical world for the kind of old fashioned gentleman who sincerely believes that human beings are fundamentally good.

When a terrorist attack on an innocent Archduke occurred, the chain reaction caused the world to fight and over forty million died to end nothing but a disagreement between cousins and relatives who all died and abdicated decades after. Thankyou my birthday and my Gt grandad fought for UK in WW1 my respects always. I am a warrior also for ENGLAND .I also won the ENGLAND football shirt signed by all our footballers I am proud of also. I fight secondary progressive MS and speak truths about WORLDWIDE . Truths of MS are we are also in an MS war with many who promote MS drugs that have killed . We all fight daily and refused the right help from our NHS. The MS societys have made billions alongside neuros. One of the biggest ever scandals of any disease ever www.gonetoosoon.org/memorials/albert-wade

loved it, well done. What a fantastic tribute to all those whose lives were lost and a reminder that these were just young boys who didn't really understand why they were fighting but just obeying orders and both sides were not just enemies but human beings with families.

Snotty nosed and red eyed with tears on my cheek as I watch the most heartbreakingly poignant tv Christmas ad ever. And we still haven't learnt to live in peace (globally speaking)😢

+raven navera I did exactly what you did! I thought John Lewis's and Sainsburys' 2015 instalments were sweet, but this stuff rips your heart out, then injects it with a copious amount of warm fuzzies and very gently tucks it back in again.

I play this shorter version every year at the men’s homeless shelter where I volunteer lead art therapy. It always puts things in perspective and prompts meaningful discussion among the men. Thank you for this video that is helping hurting people feel hope. Merry Christmas to all.

Tbh all these complaining comments and I understand why you think Sainsbury's did this just to "sell a chocolate bar" because we live right now in a cruel world that is FULL of commercialism before humanity HOWEVER I DO believe that JUST THIS ONCE somebody at Sainsbury's advertising had their heart in the right place. Not ONCE until the end of the video did you see Sainsbury's name slapped on ANYTHING and even when you saw the chocolate bar, it didn't have the Sainsbury's logo and wasn't in the shot for very long. The focus was ALL on the Christmas truce. An event that ACTUALLY happened. Of course it didn't show the true realities of war but that's because they physically COULDN'T. This ad was on before the watershed. Kids were gonna see it. Also the money spent on this goes to the royal British legion. A charity that Sainsbury's supports ALL year round. And if you need convincing further, just LOOK AT the majority of the comments. The effect this ad has on people. Most of them say "war is good for nothing", "we need more humanity", "it's sad that both sides had to fight afterwards". NOBODY is saying "omg I want a chocolate bar now". This video didn't make me want to go buy a chocolate bar from Sainsbury's. This ad made me want to go further in life and maybe actually CHANGE something in this shitty world so that maybe our children might never see the horrors of war. If Sainsbury's REALLY just wanted to sell chocolate, there are a million more effective ways they could have done it but they chose to barely mention the chocolate at all and only mentioned it in the context of charity. We live in a world of "buy buy buy" but for once I think Sainsbury's were innocent in this one.
