Once again the Master Craftsman at his work. You give me so much inspiration and guess what. This morning I heard the distant whine and buzz of a chainsaw. I of course trotted off to see just what was being cut and why. It was a few hundred yards away from my home and in the rear garden of a bungalow was a team of guys dropping an oak tree. Only because it had shed a large branch which narrowly missed the home of the owner. I introduced myself to the crew and the boss man a guy named Zee. I explained I was a wood turner and could he allow me to have maybe a couple of pieces. He filled two wheelbarrows with hefty chunks including some nice crotch pieces and several full width rounds. I was intending to halve them and do my usual across the tree turning. Seeing this beauty, done with end grain, has inspired me to attempt a copy. As my lathe has no tail stock or bed I will be reliant on a good and secure face plate attachment. Wish me luck and thanks once again.

Thank you my friend for the great compliment. Wow great story. I still find myself listening to that same sound of a chainsaw and while driving around I am always on the look out for curb side wood piles. I have so much wood that I will never be able to turn and am at a point that much of it is being destroyed by nature. I have plenty of good stuff but not what I seek LOL. Oak is great to turn while green but gets rough as it dries up. Take care

Al, I was turning a leaf picking fresh log into a bowl yesterday when a piece of bark flew off and cut my thumb like a knife. It also bruised it pretty bad too. I think I'll use a tight fitting glove from now on. Thanks for sharing all the unique and beautiful art pieces you turn. I think you appreciate what's really in the wood.

Hi Al, I just subbed your channel. I've been a woodworker for 45 years and finally bought my first lathe last fall. It is a Harbor Freight lathe and I've already spent 5 times as much in chucks, tools, and accessories. My real world is running an advertising agency but my passion is woodworking. So...I'm trying to be a sponge and absorb everything I can and apply it to my turning. I heard it said, and I just witnessed it on your channel, that something beautiful is hiding inside. All I have to do is find it. And thanks to you, maybe let the wood reveal itself instead. Thanks again.
@AlFurtado7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting. That is great a new wood turner to join us in this beautiful passion of a hobby. The HF lathe is a fine lathe and should do you fine for many years. just remember slow speed is around 600 + RPM and make sure you balance of the pieces well before turning it on. Take care my friend.

Nice job Al. I think I will give that a try but I will leave the foot on it for a while to see if it develops some checks radiating from the center and if it does I will put some turquoise in them then finish it. That is a very unique design to say the least. Thanks for sharing I really like your videos.
@AlFurtado7 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much my friend. If the piece is thick it will without a doubt crack and maybe loose the shape. You will definitely be playing with turquoise. I will have to try that soon as well.

Outstanding! I love the design. I 100% agree that if you had done a single profile on the inside it wouldn't have shown the bark off near as well. I hope that I can gain half as much insight as I start turning. My lathe is now on site and assembled, but the rest of the shop still needs to be set-up. I am turning an old railroad pump cart house/shed that has been utilized for storage for years into my shop. Unfortunately, it will still have to house a lot of storage, and I am struggling to find places for everything but will get there. You, sir, are one of many inspirations in this art form. Thank you so much.
@AlFurtado7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the nice compliment I hope you get your shop in order soon, I would go crazy if I was standing by my lathe and was not able to turn. I would drag the lathe outside if I had to LOL.Thank you very much my friend.
@thomasarussellsr7 жыл бұрын
I've considered draging it out but have a bad back and a bad knee. I would be laid up for a few days with my lathe sitting in the weather if I got it out at all. It is only my psychotic desire for safety that keeps it shut off until I have an escape route. Plus, the bug hasn't fully bit me yet as this is my first lathe and I am beginning this art/hobby.

I watched your video on putting riser blocks on your lathe. I just did the same to mine using some left over 2" oak. I did a 3 3/4" lift taking my lathe from 12" to 18 1/2". To avoid the problem of my banjo being to shortand getting in the way, I have ordered a new one for a 20" height from a comp any called One Way Manufacturing out of Canada. It cost about $350 with shipping. It eliminated the modifying the banjo insert that you had to do and hopefully will allow me to use all my rests without having to buy one's with taller posts. I enjoy your video's as I also enjoy the the more asymmetrical and natural bowls you so enjoy making.
@AlFurtado6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and commenting my friend I am you are looking back on some of my older videos. I think the riser blocks just brought my level of turning to a different dimension. I have looked at Banjos I just can't justify paying more for the banjo than I paid for the lathe LOL, I'll be making one now that I fixed my welder LOL
