In spring 2013, University of Kentucky design students were charged with imagining the future. If the Center for Applied Energy Research got the funding to install 100 acres of algae tubes to take coal flue gas and make jet fuel, what would that look like?

the great thing about the design aspect of the project is that, in spite of being heavily focused on the form, it plays a very important function: shifting the ecological consciousness around energy use and carbon cycles, to inspire people to realize that yes, a new world that is sustainable, ecologically harmonious and aesthetically beautiful is possible!

I love this, would be interesting to close the loop and make the tubes and fittings from algae derived plastics.

So if you burn methane you get heat + CO2 + water. If you add the carbonated water to caustic soda you get more heat + water + sodium carbonate. There's a permanent supply of hot water which equals a permanent supply of energy. If you add the carbonated water to algae and sunlight you get either food or fuel. Looks to me like you have the answer to water, energy, food and fuel shortages all in one and the way to get rid of both excess CO2 and methane permanently.

UoK please design the algea CO2 with hydroponics incorporated. Algae inside, flora outside. Cabbage? How about growing Golden Pothos (Epipremnum Aureum), with the algea???

Defiantly the way forward stopping CO2 at its source. Now all we need to do is apply this this kinda principle to draw-down CO2 from our atmosphere. And abracadabra we can go on using fossil fuels without a care in this World.? Business as usual money makes the World go round,Lets just hope our biodiversity sees it that way too.?

University of Kentucky I enjoyed your work much well done. However on a serious note World future food security is on my mind along with fresh water supplies in certain country's around the World. As our global climate unfolds. The Paris conference has done little to cure my fears on these issues and many more

Draw-down CO2 from the atmosphere? You do realize that plants and trees use CO2 right? Tell me, what would be the optimum level of CO2? Green houses use CO2 because vegetation likes CO2. Curbing CO2 emissions is a fantastic idea, but ignorance of the importance of CO2 is so Al Gore.

University of Kentucky thanks for sharing this idea. I'm a farmer and science lover who wants to protect and improve the environment. Can something like this work in Wisconsin and Minnesota where it gets cold? I want to see all sorts of ideas and concepts to capturing carbon. We started growing rye grass on the farm and it captures carbon dioxide and it's great for soil building and soil health. Thanks again for these videos.

Yes it can, however there is one thing you have to take into account: Be it in a temperate, cold or hot place, biorreactors need to operate at a certain temperature and pH, requiring some degree of automatization on control. The most extreme que weather, the most difficult these controls will be. Is NOT the same case, but think of it as beer brewing, similar principles apply.
