I know how to solve quadratic equations using algebra, but I have never before learned to put them in graph form. I am hoping, by God's grace, to go on to calculus eventually. 8:47 It is literally true that 'sometimes' the parabola crosses the y-axis; in fact, it does so in all cases. Otherwise, the function would be defined only for positive or only for negative numbers, which is not possible if its form is y = ax^2 + bx + c.

Cube both sides and use the binomial expansion. It is messy, but doable.
