When it comes to supporting someone, patreon or more direct does the most, but red does better than advertising (except when google floods the site with free red users via long free trials), and of course even advertising does better than someone who skips the ads or adblocks. So having red actually DOES pay those you watch (above and beyond viewing ads. I actually want it back myself, and it'd be extremely impractical even if I had the money for either to try to subscribe to everyone I watch and like. I sometimes wish some types of creators (especially smaller channels where there are a lot of fairly similar ones not even exactly trying to compete) would work together to create a more balanced way to be able to support larger numbers with smaller amounts. Like, idk, a network patreon that splits earnings among all of the creators partnered with it (and then people could choose to donate to the network, the individuals, or even both).
