I think the self-esteem/confidence thing is more of an unfair advantage if you were raised in a positive environment which allowed these traits to become inherent in your character. Versus someone who has to work to overcome negative life experiences in order to build confidence. For some people it can take years to develop genuine self-esteem and confidence. That's a disadvantage.

I agree. Personally, my confidence has grown over the years depending on how much I was willing to put myself out there doing something I wouldn't normally do, which ironically depended on my initial confidence to begin with. Whereas I have seen many people who were confident from a very young age because of their background or the opportunities they were provided with. Ofc I have seen the opposite as well, people not being confident in spite of having many qualifications because of their environment. You may argue that confidence is something you can grow over time with effort, but that might be true for most of the unfair advantages. It is something vital to success, but not something everyone has.

- the background of a person can determine their success - an unfair advantage when it comes to intelligence - location and luck (being in right place and at right time and doing something about it) - Manufacture our own luck (take more actions, do more things, meet more people, go to more events, blog about your startup, produce things & publish them, get feedback, put stuff out into the world) this leads to more of a fair advantage - education/experience (more brandable, knowledge, network) - personal growth (confidence, self-esteem) - growth mindset (anyone can do it) vs fixed mindset (It is something not for me) ~ you got to find a reality balance between them. - being humble at the end of the day

You know Ali, truth be told, just from watching many of your videos now and the very insightful knowledge you pass on, I can tell you that science behind all these things is great - but what is even greater is having the level of enthusiasm towards your target goals that you carry. I think many of us just aren't so obviously enthusiastic and the whole journey becomes more of a grind. You seem to sincerely enjoy almost every facet of learning and the journey and it's something to behold and learn from for ourselves. Your mindset is bulletproof for success regardless if you want to look at science or not, amazing work my friend.

There is an enormous difference between “hard work” and “hard work towards a specific goal!” Many people work very hard but get nowhere... mostly because they don’t know where they are going or the steps required to get there. Once you know those elements ... that’s when hard work pays off!

I admire your dedication and your "well-achieveness"; the fact that you are a doctor and you spend your time learning and reading -and playing piano apparently. Best of luck, and keep up the good work.

Coming across this channel today and also this specific episode where you talked about unfair advantages was what I really needed, I've been working so hard to the point that I fell sick I'm typing this on my sick bed, and each day I keep asking myself what am I doing wrong, and I keep looking for newer ways to improve my methods... I think the thing that resonates with me most is the philosophy that EVERYONE has some advantage they can leverage. It gels well with the fact that there are so many examples of people building and growing success while starting from what is traditionally considered severely limiting conditions. Also interesting to think about how the 'fair play' and 'unfair advantage' variables are interdependent - definitely some causation. Not just that, but 'I think' is it fairly evident that the 'success' returns are exponential with time when an unfair advantage bleeds into fair play early in life. Discovered your channel today Ali - loving it!

Love how you focus on reality and real topics, and not just talking about "working harder". I feel that the common view of success, however that may be defined, only focuses on the growth mindset, and as you said, may sometimes turn into an unrealistic mindset. I believe it is crucial to not ignore luck and the fair/unfair advantage throughout the process, but at the same time to also allow yourself the opportunity for luck to transpire. Great video as always.

Anyone who finds this book interesting might enjoy Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers" too - I haven't read "The Unfair Advantage" yet, but Gladwell's book might have covered similar grounds on some respects (or to be precise how famous people's success isn't contingent on hard work only but also external, uncontrollable factors like date of birth, world events, and opportunities)

Great book! I think Gladwell explains how external forces can help, but that's not the only thing that makes the successful, successful. They still had to work hard.

Stefanie Wong Gladwelk's book is about a slightly different vain, a good read none the less. Will Ali be covering books such as these (known best sellers)? Honestly, I hope not. I am more interested in these lesser known authors with interesting content.

Wow! This is an amazing thought Ali. Also would you recommend a book as well at the end of the video or the book you decide to review next. So that it feels more like a book-club. Bravo! For the effort. Much appreciated man.

Seriously i am currently on this book 'outliers' I just started today nd hav read only 20% of it.. And yes, up until it is something about this unfair advantage! But honestly this book is really hooking and i can't wait to finish my dinner and get back to it!

Thank you for another great video, Ali :) I would only disagree that confidence and self-esteem can, as you nonchalantly say, be put into the fair advantage column. While you are technically right that these can be developed, I have noticed that family upbringing and trauma are often the main factors behind their lack. It is one thing to have had the luck and the privilege to grow up in such an environment that helps you build a healthy self-esteem, and quite another to have had it impaired from an early age by social conditioning (another example is being bullied in school). In the latter case, it might take you years to rebuild and even lots of therapy. And this delay could cost you opportunities. Just a thought :) P.S. Of course, it depends what we mean by "confidence", but I would personally put boundaries and being able to push back in this category, and a lot of people have issues with those, and they take time to rebuild.

Wow, new series! You must be one of the most consistent, mindful and practical youtuber I followed. Your content is always enjoyable and succinct. The education is indeed an unfair advantage especially when you leave in place where 'a degree from a well recognised (international) university' is put blatantly as a requirement on a job post, lol. Anyways, keep up your good work! Thank you for an inspiration!

Ali? Ive been a subscriber for about a month now and I just want to thank you for doing this video. Why? You see, I have a TBi that I got in 2018. You just gave me that AHA! moment I have several unfair advantages. with a single video you removed my feeling of worthlessness and anxiety as a 31 y o lady I am so grateful for this video WHY? because you made me realize that despite having TBi and chronic anterogram amnesia cause of that accident, still have a "knack" in the arts. (You see, i have a degree in fine arts and I actually made my account's picture in pen and ink) thank you I looove your channel. Thank you for lighting my candle and telling me I have SEVERAL unfair advantages I loove you(not romantically but as a person) for that Have a great rest of the day man Thanks again for this. I actually took notes while this video was playing :D sending digital hugs from this Manila Lady

Most of us don't know what we want to do 'when we grow up', let alone compare our abilities to the rest of the world and simply decide that were qualified to judge, fit for competition. But I shall certainly be reading this book. Thank you for the inspiration and information. I'm really interested in how I might be swayed into thinking otherwise.
