So what am I doing wrong if it just saves empty files o 0 bytes? I have my complete .wire model all shadered and in layers, click export blender, wait until it's done converting... but it creates and empty file, nothin but the cube in blender :/

Enormously helpful video as always, thank you to Rajeev Nair and thank you for sharing this Ray. Edit: with the current version there are issues if your layers include characters such as , ; + / s in the name, so if the export tool is generating an empty .blend file check your layer names

Weird pairing though? Is there much need for alias>blender, considering anyone paying the stratospheric sub fees for alias would probably send to Maya or high end rendering app?

Not really inside the design studio, maybe if it gets outsourced for marketing, those companies would use maya, max or cinema4d, but in the studio, especially the younger designers and viz guys are using blender. Vred would be the high cost viz they would also have, many times resellers just pack both Alia’s and vred into a bundle. I’ve been in studios where they are using vred, maya, blender, keyshot, max, it’s really the staffs choice on what they like to use to visualize. Most the time they’ll have licenses for any option. You have to remember these are all internal private images anyways, so setting up a scene and rendering it for studio reviews, most 3D software are capable of that with the right skill set. I do alot of visualization work for my clients and they love my blender renderings.

Hi, please help. When i open the file in blender the surface of the converted subd from alias is not uniform in blender. I tried to quad remesh, clean surfaces and orient normals and still no luck. I can’t add a seamless texture in the shader panel, the surface edges do not align even if they look so in alias and blender. Same with rhino grasshopper, for every subd squared surfaces that join as boundary, they do not align and filling up from individually deleted lines next to vertices will take time. I tried remesher? Quad remesher and all other addons. Mu alias and blender tolerances are 0.01 mm

Which version of AutoStudio 2021 are you using? 2021_3 is meant for AutoStudio 2021 Update 3. It won't get activated unless you're using that version.

Im getting slightly insane at why this is not working for me. I am admin on my computer. Done a path for both Blender 2.9 and 3.0. Installed the new updated version of the plugin that supports blender 3.0 Tried both Alias 2021.3 and 2022.2 Tried different .wire files and layering names (simple layer naming withous commas) Any thoughts anybody?

@@V8manual955 I think i solved it by adding a system variable instead of an user variable. Search for "system variables" in windows. Create a "new" variable. browse for the blender folder and click "ok" Should work. But i am no expert. worked for me at least. hope you have the same result! :)

This is neat. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Personally, I can also recommend a plugin called STEPper (spelt just like that). It's a paid plugin but if you bring in a lot of CAD data into Blender from various sources in the STEP format then it is worth the money. It also keeps a link to the source so you can adjust the tessellation at any time. One question I have about the Alias to Blender plugin is, does it respect layers that have symmetry enabled?

I had so many problems with importing CAD from SW that I bought that plugin myself but I still have seam and normal issues with it. Its fine for simple parts but with surfaces with more complex curvature, I find surfaces issues with high resolution shots. This could be me though and would be curious what your workflow is.

@@ryan6530 That's interesting because I've had nothing but good luck with this plugin. As far as settings are concerned, there are only about 3 which basically control the mesh density. Being a long term 3ds Max user I can also testify that the mesh tessellation is so much better than Max's native STEP/IGES importer which used to create areas with super long triangles that used to drive me mad. STEPper seems to create much nicer meshes with even polygon distribution. It also respects instances which I wasn't expecting and is great for situations where you have hundreds of washers or springs that are all the same. I've even used a 3ds Max plugin called Power Translators which is good but quite complex with many settings. It's also very expensive. I'm quite late to Blender and only got into it about 10 months but have already completed a number of customer projects with the help of STEPer. I've also recommended couple of enhancements to the developer of STEPper to improve its functionality but unfortunately I didn't get a reply, so I just use workarounds for now.

@@ysfdesign I posted on the plug in forum maybe 2 or 3 weeks ago? Posted some close up part screen shots to see if the Author had any suggestions but was pretty much out of luck. 3DS max actually has a native SW importer which works really well but like you I am getting more into blender. I found exporting out of rhino as an stl fixes seam issues, there are alot more mesh settings though and something I hope the plugin will add as well as keeping the mesh updater intact within the file as modifying it later seems to be lost. This alias to blender importer looks very good I will probably test it out with the raw surfaces first without the SW features and then try to import the complete part back into alias and export the Blend file and see how it looks.

​@@ryan6530 A lot of people seem to use MOI 3D as an intermediate translator as it's a NURBS modeller with what looks like a decent mesh exporter. I don't own this product so I can't give a definitive answer. Keep me posted on how you get on round-tripping the model back through Alias because from my experience Alias seems to choke a bit if you load it up with too much data from a parametric modeller. STEPper is good and I'm happy it exists but the developer doesn't seem very active on it which is unfortunate.

I'm actually having issues exporting SubDs from Alias and then importing them to Blender. I have tried stitching them and exporting them as FBX files as well (Which works well with non SubD surfaces) but this doesn't seem to the work for SubD surfaces. I've even tried converting them to Nurbs and then exporting them. Any suggestions?
