In 1974 I walked in with my allowance to finally pick up my vinyl copy of “Billion Dollar Babies “ at a K-Mart ... I was about 13 and already a big Alice Cooper Group fan. When I got there I grabbed the record but looked down and saw a record I did not know called “Pretties For You” . I decided I would get that one instead since I thought what if I never saw it again ? I wore that record out ... I’ve still got it. I tracked down “Easy Action “ and finally finished my collection. I love those 1st two albums especially... and all of those amazing studio albums up through “Muscle Of Love” . Easily the greatest American rock group of all time . 🎸❤️🎧

The original Alice Cooper group lived on Brown rd a dirt road in Pontiac twp in a old farmhouse around 1970 thru late 1971. My childhood friends lived near them They got to meet the members of the band. Way cool back in the day. I believe they wrote Love It To Death on the farm. When I'm 18 hit the national airwaves. The group became famous. The Killer album was penned their too Hard to believe that was 50 years ago So many memories I was only 14 at the time .The original group was the best. I still listen to them often.They were one of the top bands of the 70's I got to see them live at Cobo Hall in 1971!! It was one of the best concert I ever attended. I love your book Dennis awesome recounts of your glory days

@joe curtin "Killer" is one of their heaviest albums! Halo Of Flies? You Drive Me Nervous? Dead Babies? Those are very dark and heavy songs! "Dead Babies" starts out quietly but gets very heavy. They didn't lose their heaviness on "KIller" at all! It's just as heavy and intense as "Love It To Death," if not more so.

@joe curtin Silly? Wow! "Halo of Flies" is *anything but* silly. That is one of their heaviest songs! Oh well, as you said, to each his own. Many hardcore fans of the original Alice Cooper band actually pick "Killer" as their favorite album. I prefer "Love It To Death," but "Killer" is just as heavy, if not more so.

@joe curtin So when Alice simply, actually, *told the truth* about himself, about being straight and liking golf, you and your friends found that to be "idiotic"? What a very strange perspective! Telling the truth about oneself, even, or perhaps especially, if it shatters some peoples' *image* of oneself, could not be more fearless and punk rock-- i.e. *truly* punk rock, as opposed to some public image. The two links that you shared are ok, especially the second one, but they are still not as cool as Alice, whether in 1971, or today. Anyway, every Cooper fan, other than you, whom I have ever heard on the subject of "Killer," loves it and finds it to be very heavy, but you certainly have the right to your differing opinion. Rock on! I'm out.

@joe curtin I have to disagree with ya Joe. I think Killer is very heavy. I find LITD more on the psychedelic side and Killer on the hard rock side. You Drive Me Nervous, Halo of Flies, Under My Wheels etc are so heavy. That is my favorite album and in my top 5 of all time albums. To each his own but I disagree with you BUT I do love both albums

Yes, the Brown road farm was great fun! Lots of pigeons in the old barn became target practice, Michael Bruce and I double dated the Bacon sisters from Grand Blanc. They were sizzling hot,,,,,

Unfortunately I never saw the original Alice Cooper band live. I did wear out the albums on my stereo and always loved Dunaway's bass. I've seen Alice (solo) numerous times but my highlight was a few years ago when the Hollywood Vampires played and Dennis appeared in the encore. The original band was highly underrated. Just listen to Love It To Death or Killer. Thanks for this interview and Dennis thanks for your book!

yep ive lived in buffalo ny all my life born in 62 and ive been lucky to have been exposed to great canadien music also we had a great am station that back in the 60s was 50 thousand watts it was wkbw and could be heard up and down the east coast

Saw him a few years back at a record store in Dallas. Played with Pretties for you. . Did Alice’s first album in entirety and Dennis came out and played. Killer billion dollar babies. Got the set list and his autograph. Have a video that I will cherish forever.

I remember listening to Black JuJu long play smoking some good stuff cruising the back dirt roads at night time. They local roads were not far from the farm. So many good times and memories. . Music puts you back in a space and time Wow 1971 so long ago but I can remember like yesterday I was so young had my whole life in front of me

The 4 AC/Ezrin albums are recorded so well. About 39 minutes in, DD talks about the recording process for those albums. The bass especially was recorded great. Great stuff on "Long Way To Go", BTW. Thank you! I have long wondered if they were layered...now I know. Still kicking myself for missing the BDB Holiday show at the Norfolk Scope, Dec 16th (1973?).

Great insight here. Growing up in Windsor Ontario, I appreciate Mr. Dunaways knowledge of our Canadian CRTC rules. Not only is he an arts enthusiast, he is also a history enthusiast. Also like that he mentioned the Quarto's. I saw Susie Q open up for Kiss at Olympia; and saw her brother Mike at The Riv in Windsor. Also bought his album that night ( and I still have). Dennis I was lucky to see at This Aint Hollywood in Hamilton Ontario. My favourite bassist. Dose not get enough credit for his playing. Finally, thanks for mentioning "Yummy Yummy Yummy". I still have my 45 RPM on my wall. Ron Binks.

Alice Cooper took a serious step backward getting rid of the original Alice Cooper band! Since Alice has been corporate song writing, corporate promotion, and corporate bullshit! ALL of Alice's best songs were written by the original band back in the 70's! The fact that singer "Vincent Furnier" was attributed to being "Alice Cooper" in its entirety for promotional reasons, was unfortunate for the other members and music in general. Dennis Dunaway was really a stand out bass player back in the day, very underrated as a player.

I don't believe he "got rid of the band" per se. There are differing reasons that were given from a few of the original members of the breakup (Glen dealing with substance abuse, solo projects and financial issues). I don't disagree about his music taking a step back, but he's released a handful of studio albums that are up there with the material with the original group (WTMN, Goes To Hell, The Last Temptation and the new album).

Yeah, you might be right, I've heard differing accounts raging from Bob Ezrin wanted Alice to use different people to the original guys wanted to get away from all of the theatrics. Regardless the song writing took a major hit without the original guys, especially Michael Bruce.
