Tripod being C tier is definetly a hot take. I feel literally the opposite way with most of your points on it. The atmosphere they created on this album is so captivating. Jerry always wrote most of the songs musically and Layne literally contributed the most lyrically ln this album. The process may have been disconnected but it didnt hinder the music. Id say Tripod is most AIC sounding album they made and Facelift the least AIC sounding album considering it still has that 80s rock/glam metal sound to it. Artistically Tripod was their peak but Layne was clearly not in a healthy place.

Interesting ranking. For me, self-titled is “A” tier. Despite Layne’s struggles and clear absence during that time, Self-titled is one of the most unique and oddest sounding records I’ve ever heard. AiC always had that stranger sound to them and I feel they leaned heavily into that side to a big success. Not every song is great but I love that record. Black Gives Way to Blue is a great return, I’d agree with that. I do feel Duvall is lost in the mix there too and that it just doesn’t have the weirdness that is signature AiC and moves more toward a mainstream rock sound. Still, it’s a good record. It’s a very middle of the road AiC release for me.

A if not S. Self-titled and Dirt are always competing for the nr 1 slot as my favorite AIC album. Dirt is more influential / relevant / has all the hits, but is a little inconsistent. Also I always skip Rooster. Self titled is their peak musically. It has a haunting atmosphere, it’s heavy, moody, complex, varied, unconventional, sometimes almost prog. The only weaker song is Heaven Beside You, but not to the point that I ‘d skip it.

“Dirt” and “Black Gives Way to Blue” are two of my favorite albums of all time ( like in the top five). It’s rare you find musical artists that can create something so special that you can say truly say they shaped your childhood. I’ve listened to every one of their albums at least over 10 times in their entirety. And I still feel the emotional gut punch I felt the first time I heard it. I love this band so much. Thanks for your ranking. I’m glad someone also appreciates “Jar of Flies” as much as I do.

Jar of Flies is SSS tier for me. One of my all-time favorite records, period. Of their full-length studio albums, my favorite is honestly the self-titled album. The songwriting is a bit undercooked on some tracks, but the sound is so uniquely sludgey and nauseating while still being melodic and beautiful at turns. And I *love* Cantrell’s guitar layering on that album, especially in songs like “Shame in You”. Sean Kinney’s drumming also sounds pretty great on that album, too.

@ganthc2 жыл бұрын
I like your review here, Cody. I do think the choice to have Jerry as a more centered voice in the new albums is a decent one, because his voice does evoke the feels fans have of AIC when Layne was singing. And you can’t really replace Layne, so having William blend in as second to Jerry has a certain appeal. And the music is still great, which I like. And the Unplugged album is incredible, as is the live concert. I completely agree with your viewpoint on the performance…it’s haunting. Especially having the opening song be Nutshell, given what happened to Layne.

My big problem w/it is that it’s wayyyy too long, like take out Junkie, Celbuante (or whatever its called) and all of those 1 minute tracks. Personally think it’s the best album since Endgame. Yes over Dystopia

I get what you're saying about the second half of BGWTB, but those songs have really grown on me over the years. They're really great songs. When the Sun Rose Again is a cool Sap-era acoustic song. Acid Bubble is a psychedelic song that reminds me of the self-titled Tripod album. Lesson Learned sounds like it could have fit on Dirt. Take Her Out took the longest to grab me, but now I really enjoy it. It's just a really well-written song with an actually catchy chorus, and that opening riff doesn't get out of my head for days. Another one that could have fit on Dirt. Private Hell is one of my all-time favorite AiC songs. It would definitely make my top-5. BGWTB is a phenomenal album, and is second only behind Dirt for me.

My dad's favorite band of all time! Great to hear you rank them so highly. Layne died when I was two but he was always in my childhood. Man in the Box being Tommy Dreamer's theme song, Guitar Hero/Rock Band having their songs. Facelift-MTV Unplugged I'd personally put in S-tier due to them all being so different. Tripod is a album really speaks to me, it's a haunting album, not as much as Unplugged obviously but most songs on Tripod personify addiction. Loved hearing you sing and playing acoustic brother. Hope to see more album tier lists/reviews! Love you man, have an awesome day.

For me all their albums are top tier, one of the few bands with no bad records, with and without Layne. For me the self titled is actually my favorite, it's just so sludgy and dark. It's not for everybody but it just really works for me. Another hot take, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here is probably my second favorite, it's just so good! Edit - seeing you put them together as two similar albums makes total sense. They happen to work for me big time, I guess it's a vibe I enjoy. Totally get though why it wouldn't work for you.
@supremelordoftheuniverse54492 жыл бұрын
Agree on the sel-titled: probably their best. Disagree on the post-Layne stuff. It doesn’t even sound like AiC, it’s run of the mill conventional rock with some Cantrell riffs sprinkled in ver it. And believe me, I tried. I listened to BgWtB a couple times, nothing remarkable or worth a re-listening.

I respect your opinion. Alice in Chains is also my favourite band and Tripod happens to be my favourite album. I know that is not "better" than Dirt (that album is way too loaded with classics) but Tripod excels in arragements. Layne was actually the most involved member in writing tunes in this one (only 3 are written by Jerry) but the bulk of the work is carried out by Jerry. The atmosphere of this album is unmatch and it has a profoundity that keeps giving. It is certainly the one that I come back the most. Listen to the guitar arrangement in "god am", man it is heavenly. The solo work on "over now" brings me to tears, and what an amazingly dark song is "frogs". Anyways, really nice video man, keep it up :)

You got Tripod's story a bit wrong, Layne was writing most of the lyrics for that album, you can tell specially in songs like Frogs, I think the atmosphere it creates with all the droning and distorted sounds makes it unique, to me, the pinaccle of both jerry and layne's writing ability, if Layne was way more present when it came to writing as a group, we could have had a music changing album, but we still got a magnum opus in my eyes.

tripod is my favorite album of all time. i almost got a stroke when you put it in C. man, I listen to a lot of dark shit - funeral doom, melancholic black metal, heck purple mountains by David Berman, one of the darkest albums ever made, yet tripod's authentic brooding and hopelessly doomed melancholy is unmatched, its like you can almost feel a layer of desperation grime form on your skin after a listen. songs such as head creeps, again, god am, sludge factory, frogs.. they are just unmatched. Very special album that doesn't not sound like anything before or after, like the ultimate dark end product of the band's evolution. It stands head and shoulders above everything else they made for my taste, and Id like to add get born again and died to that collection as they are obviously very much made with the same DNA as tripod.

Love that you love Alice In Chains, but def Tripod in C is a hot take. This is the album where they settled into what they were going to sound like going onward. Also Shame In You is the best AIC song.

Dirt is my favorite album of theirs. No other alice in chains album intro kicks ass more than Them Bones. One of the greatest rock albums of all time

One of the most influential rock bands of all-time. They just struck a nerve with me and so many other kids at the end of the 80's and into the 90's. I remember the first time I heard them on Headbangers Ball. I had to go out and buy the album the next day.

I've been waiting for Cody to do music reviews. I'd really like to hear a Stone Sour ranking down the line.. When I got my first car in 2003, it had a tape deck and I was collecting CD's (still do) but it was used and someone had left 2 tapes. 1 being Facelift and the other being the Black album by Metallica. I got a CD player installed a few months later but I overplayed the hell out of those 2 tapes. 2 great albums that I did not listen to for a few years after that haha.
