One of my favorite things about this band and all the other 90's bands is that they all have their own sound. When you hear Alice In Chains come on there is no mistaking them. To many bands sound the same anymore.

+joe Vol Alice In Chains were never a pure grunge band. They were technically a Heavy Metal bands with strong alt-rock influences that just kinda got caught up in that whole scene at the time because they were from Seattle. William is a great voice and song writer. When you think that you have to replace someone on a team, you never meet your own expectations. I have heard several interviews with Jerry, and he has never talked about William "replacing" Layne. He talks about how William fits right in and is a member of AIC. Reality is Layne passed away, the band wanted to continue and they found a great artist in William who ADDS to the AIC lineage. William was never their to replace, he was their to add a level to the band and he has done so fantastically. Thank you William.

Just found out this track is from 2009, it sounds so close to the sound/vibe of the original three albums. No one tops Layne, but DuVall is a respectable replacement. This track is as good as modern rock gets, in my opinion. That is if you'd consider this modern.
@DakotaDoesStuff649 жыл бұрын
+Adam Brier - Granted, yes, DuVall is more stable, but I don't share in your disdain for Layne. He gave so much to the band, both in his lyrics and his performances, and even more to the music industry. Yes, he was a serious addict, but that's nothing to shame him for- it's the music industry, furthermore the rock music industry. An industry synonymous with drugs, the temptation is everywhere. Guys like Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, and recently Scott Weiland, were all beyond talented- but their addictions crippled and killed them, both in the sense of potential and the literal sense. Still, that doesn't mean they deserve to be judged so harshly in the aftermath of their passing. They deserve to be mourned- it begs the question "what if?" Imagine if legends like Layne, Cobain, etc, lived into old age? If they had more time to compose more music? Would they be around today? We'll never know. But as long as there are people who can hear, the music of men like Layne will live on for him.
@siegmund879 жыл бұрын
+Adam Brier That ain't how Will feels. That's not how the whole band feels. So where you get this idiotic notion that you knew him better than they did. Go ahead and try heroin. See how easy it is to get rid of that shit. I'm pretty certain you would not be able to without some form of help.

I was in deep depression back in 2009 when I first heard this song. It sounded relatable, it was angre but Cantrell have this gift to give angriness, a pitch of vulnerability. It got me headbanging for the first time in months. I carry this moment with me until today, Everytime I feel down, I put this song up to eleven and just stop and remember how many shit I went through, and stood for myself anyway. If you are suffering, mentally, may this song give your suffering some meaning. Today I still struggle with depression, more than 10 years after, and listening this song gives me a reminder of how strong I am, even if don't realize. So are you, stand-up, just enough bang your head, you still alive for a reason. And if you give up, You will never know. (Got very emotional, sorry) Layne must be proud.

Jerry has a clever way of writing songs which anyone with basic music education will understand. In the verse, he often uses dissonant chords and melodies, while in the refrain he goes to consonant and memorable stuff. This makes pronounced contrast in the song, making the refrain more catchy. A cunning trick. He also uses a lot of fourth interval in the vocals, and those two things together with characteristic sound make this band unique.

William Duvall can harmonise with Jerry just as well as Layne could. He's also a decent axe man, giving the band a second guitar, something their didn't have with Layne. William has now been with the band longer than Layne ever was, and they're still playing music. It's now 2023. Jerry has kept the bus rolling. God bless the man. He should go on Rick Beato's channel for an interview.

Some people get so attached they never realize the "new guy" has been there longer than "the original". The same happens to other bands, just take at look at Metallica's Trujillo, for instance.

The greatest rock band to walk the face of the earth. Undeniable. The first band to ever have an EP debut at #1. Every one thinks Nirvana or Pearl Jam are the best band of that era. They can’t hold Alice in Chains’ jock strap!! Jerry Cantrel should and will go down as one of the greatest singer/song writer/guitarist of all time. The Alice In Chains sound is unmistakable and unmatched. There unique sound sets them apart from every other rock band. Period. Rest In Peace Layne and Mike.

Jerry's move to Los Angeles, forever memorialized in this heavy, heavy tune. There is some deep dark stuff implied in those lyrics... gets me everytime... reminds me of the 3 most amazing Summer months of my life when I LIVED it... and that's what great music is all about... finding something deep and dark inside of you to pull out, to force you to reckon with. Brilliant.
