Jerry Cantrell, guitarist, wrote this song for his father who is a Vietnam vet. He wrote this from the point of view of the soldier. Jerry wasn't close to his father because of the trauma his father came back with due to the war, and this was Jerry's way of trying to understand him and put himself in his father's shoes, and to honor his father as well. This song helped father and son get closer and build a better relationship. The song is called Rooster because that's his father's nickname.

Also, nickname Rooster was specifically for machine gunners, and the enemy was always trying to "snuff the Rooster".

Not "they". "He". It's a personal song, not one that a band wrote for him

Song is about Jerry Cantrell’s father who served in Vietnam and was nicknamed ‘Rooster’.

@@robertjones1886 yes but Rooster is a reference to his father, who was nicknamed Rooster by his own father as a kid, because he was so cocky, and his hair would naturally spike up.

The reference to "The Rooster" is the logo for the 101st airborne division is an eagle, the locals in Vietnam mistook the eagle for a chicken/rooster

Pretty sure that’s dead wrong. Rooster was Jerry Cantrell’s fathers nickname.

I like the channel, like the bass playing. The intro could be shorter, though I do enjoy it. Cheers

True, I dont like long intros, 1+ min is too much, even 30 seconds is. I prefer channels who get right into it or a quick 5-10 second musical intro and not a lot of talking. Came to them to listen to their reaction, not having to fast forward through the intro to get to the reaction.

When I was downrange in Tikrit I met a lot of sincere civilians who would come work filling sandbags to make basically chicken feed for their families and communities. Doctors, teachers, regular people. One day they didnt show up to fill sandbags. We found all 20 of them executed in the bus transporting them, victims of trying to live. A day doesnt pass that I dont see one of them in a crowd of people. Spent the rest of my life protesting ignorance and blind nationalism. Id like to request No Use For A Name - Biggest Lie for Mohammed and Buenrostro.

Guitarist Jerry Cantrell wrote Rooster about his father's experiences in Vietnam and when Jerry saw his dad in the audience at one of their shows, Jerry asked Layne (and the guys) to play Rooster and they did. It was the first time Jerry's dad heard Jerry's music and knew that his son understood him through that song. It brought Jerry and his dad closer together. And Layne had a vital part in that reunion. (Meanwhile Layne's own biological father was an opportunist). Layne sang the hell out of Rooster (and Would?) :) Layne Staley's vocal range can run rings around any other grunge singer (including Chris Cornell) in my opinion. Layne could sing the phone book and never hit a wrong note. Even at the end of his life, with no teeth and a lisp, his voice, wit and humor were all still there. Layne's voice and vocal range was so powerful he did NOT need auto tune or pro-tools until he lost his teeth and had a lisp around 1998, and even then he still killed the vocals. Barrett Martin (who played with Layne in Mad Season) said that when he stood to the side of the stage, he could hear the sound of Layne vocal resonance come out of Layne's body LOUDER than it did coming out of the speakers, Layne's voice was that powerful. My Top 20 AIC songs... Love Hate Love (Live at the Moore, December 1990...Layne Staley in his prime and is UNTOUCHABLE PERFECTION performed live by a rock band. All other rock bands should strive to have a live performance this perfect), Man in the Box (Live at Weedsport, NY 1991 - the Layne’s Pissed Version...though the original version may be better to react to, because Weedsport was during Clash of the Titans tour where Slayer fans were giving the band crap and Layne got pissed and changed the lyrics), Bleed the Freak (Live at the Moore, December 1990), It Ain’t Like That (if you need a video use Singles Pro Shot video), Real Thing (Live ANYWHERE), Them Bones, God Smack (Live at Hollywood Rock, 1993), Grind, Again, No Excuses, Brush Away, Frogs, Sludge Factory (During MTV Unplugged 1996, Layne screwed up the 2nd verse like 8 times, though the show only included one of those times), What the Hell Have I, God Am, Got Me Wrong, Swing On This, Social Parasite, We Die Young. I removed Queen of the Rodeo because that's not exactly politically correct these days.
