Brother in law was Brown Water Navy, multiple tours, retired Chief Warrant, died of cancer- Agent Orange... I was USNR, 67', 68', piece of 69'... Sealion. No glory here for me, but so many in our gen experienced much glory. In college, UofF, Gainesville, I hooked up with a 2 Bronze and a Silver Star awarded Army Sgt., whose father was a retired Col., who flew B-29's in WWII and Korea. We sat at Tiger Hall, in 70' and watched SDS take over the Admin. Bldg, as thousands Marched at night with lit candles. The war protests. He was among those used for bait to draw out enemy contact. He experienced Tet, 68'. That's about all he ever said about it and I never asked either. He was a poster child for PTSD. HARD to believe, it was so long ago, but every war since, has ended the same, but the cost of admission was never cheap.

My step grandfather somehow survived the first wave on omaha beach without a scratch. He was later hit twice during the battle of the bulge. Every now and then if he got some wine in him he would make a general statement about the war but wouldn't give details saying it was "too bloody". He went to see saving private ryan by himself after hearing how realistic it was. All he said about it was he cried the whole time thinking about his buddies getting mowed down on that beach and that while it was probably the most accurate movie he ever saw, reality was much much worse. No one should experience even once what these combat soldiers faced on a daily basis yet humanity still finds ways to get into wars. Miss you Papa Tony.

as a product of the ww2 generation i concur. i lived in s. fl for a long time. i was with the gov. i ran into countless vets from the usa and germany. it didnt matter which side u were on the stories i heard were brutal. the most brutal was a former waffen ss guy who served at the russian front. it was ancient hatred from both sides. i have forgotten about these brave men from both sides who did what they had to do. thanks for making me remember what none of us should forget.

My father was 101st Airbourne. He was a sergeant very fast. He was in the bush the majority of time while in Nam. He never talked about it. He was a total badass and much tougher than me. He never talked about it, but it affected him the rest of his life. He died with a long list of problems. RIP dad.

My grandpa was in Vietnam he lost both of his legs up to his hips and was in a wheelchair all his life. He would cry whenever he would see or hear any war movies or music. My mom told me of an incident that happened when she was young he freaked out one day during dinner at the table. He threw a glass and plate at my grandmother and took a knife and jumped out of his chair and started crawling away with the knife in his hand thinking they were suicide bombers. He passed away last year but he was never the same and never told me or my mom about it and only told a few details to my grandmother about what happened over their. For those who don’t know: The M60 machine gun had a muzzle flash that resembled a roosters tail. Machine gunners in Vietnam were referred to as “roosters”. From the start of a gunfight, machine gunners life spans were about 7 seconds in Vietnam…To this day, this song is an anthem in the Marine Corps. Every Marine infantryman has sat in the barracks with 10 of his friends drinking and singing this song together. I know because I was(still am) one of those guys. Semper fi.

My dad actually told me the meaning of this song a while back, just listened to it because I wanted to and it seems he told me correctly what it's about judging by the comments. But this song now reminds me of an experience I had when I met a Vietnam war vet walking through this little park (which me and friends skateboard at) to get to this store near by. He asked which way the particular store he wanted to go was. I directed him but before he started to walk away I noticed he had a hat on saying Vietnam war veteran or something and that's when I said "thank you for your service" and the old man was very appreciative that I said that because he told me after that he didn't used to and still never has been thanked too much for fighting in Vietnam. He explained that when him and his buddies got home they were called baby killers and people hated them for fighting there. Now this song with that particular lyric "they spit on me in my homeland" always reminds me of that man I met that day

My father was 101st Airborne from about 1954-1967. KIA at 31 years old. I've spent my Life (37 years with Department of Defense) serving my country. My dad will be forever young to me and I'm 60. Vietnam may have been a mistake for us to get involved in, but show some thanks and sympathy for the guys who served. More Vietnam vets died by the mid 1990's than actually died in the war itself. Booze, drugs, suicide and car "accidents". That stinking war stole a LOT more than my father. It destroyed a million American families and several million Vietnamese families. I missed vietnam by a year or so. I knew many whose older brothers went. Dad was a ww2 combat vet. They never want to talk about it cause they do not want to remember the pain and death of their friends. women like to talk about their feelings. would you want to talk about holding a dear friend in your arms as they bleed to death and there is nothing you can do? This song always makes me think about my father, who made it through five years of WW2 (Canadian, started in 1940 after the Brits started in 1939), mostly in France and Italy. I was told that when he got home he gave away his hunting rifles and fishing equipment; he wouldn't even kill a fly or mosquito after that, he just swished them away. He was a good father for someone so hurt psychologically by the insanity of war; he said war is a hell no one should be subjected to.

My first tour in Iraq in 05 we were jamming out to this song doing weapons maintenance on our trucks. A civilian contractor wandered over and like us he was an Infantry Marine who volunteered for 2 tours in Nam. He didn't say too much about it but when he left he shook each of our hands and said he was grateful for our service and sacrifice. I said we should be thanking him for his service and I remember his choked up response was "Service for what?". 2 trips in Iraq and 6+ years in Afghanistan and after August 15th I know exactly what he meant. My dad died in Vietnam. I never really thought about anything tangible because you know he died when I was 6 months old. I knew he had to be afraid. He was just a country kid 19 years old and I knew he had to miss home who was from such a small town. I never really realized the bullet stream from somewhere... This song meant a great deal to many- I made my dad a cd with this song on it because he was a Vietnam war vet (he was a medic and a sniper)- I was his little girl but throughout my life we always remained close- there wasn’t a day that went by that I didn’t see or talk with him. I explained the song to him and he loved it. My dad was humble, strong and had grit like I’ve not seen since- he was a rock to our whole family and put his needs last. He past away this last year but as I sat with him in the hospital, I put my phone up to his ear and played all his favorite songs - this being one of them. This is meant to be a compliment, I swear. Alice in Chains is a blues band playing metal. Imagine Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, or Howlin Wolf singing this song and it would fit. Layne just amplifies that. It's awesome.

Howlin Wolf woulda made it faster and he woulda gone into that high pitch moaning in the chorus. Muddy Waters woulda made it a bit slower, with a really trippy electric guitar riff, and some really thick dry drums, singing with that bassy-throaty style. It would be very spiritual. John Lee Hooker woulda made it stripped down, just him and an electric, maybe some clapping, and he would throw in these little improvised licks all over, and the rhythm would be totally unique, something unreplicate. JLH woulda fucked with the melody a lot, with a clean low voice tone.

I can safely say that this is one of the most badass songs I've ever heard. The first line, "they haven’t found a way to kill me yet," gives me shivers every time. The flowing guitar building up in the intro before the electric guitars break into a cascade of hard rock awesomeness. The vocals are incredible, the musicians know what they're doing. Some little shit kid called my dad...MY DAD...a baby killer. I slapped him upside the head even though he was bigger than me LOL. Definitely the daughter of a naval aviator! What our military did was amazing and if and when they came home they went and still go through shit. It is horrible. This song meant something else to me. When I was an addict being trafficked I would play this or Metallica fade to black before I would do anything. Not sure why but it helped me find a center in my own being. I had to go toe to toe a thousand times unnarmed with my apponate twice my size and be the one coming out ahead. I have great love for my Father who died from PTSD in 2000 from his service in Vietnam. He suffered the humiliation of the shouts of baby killer at the Airport in San Francisco. When I came back home from Desert Storm there were 30 Vietnam Vets their to welcome me home at the Des Moines Airport. They paved the way for us and I will never stop thanking them for THEIR service.

I thought it was kinda corny when I was in the Marines that 3/2 had this as their battalion song but, learning more about Rooster’s story and the lore of 3/2 during the island hopping campaign in WWII, it’s actually extremely fitting and badass. My grandfather was in Vietnam. My dad spoke to me about it a few days ago as we were in the car, just talking about current politics and wars. He said he never really spoke about what happened over there, and that silence says enough by itself. My grandparents got divorced because of the war, he went on to remarry and lives a very peaceful life. God bless our troops.

I know guys that went 5-6 tours in Iraq & Afghanistan. Remember WW1 Vets in Parades now all gone. Over 95% WW2 Vets are gone along with the majority of Vietnam Vets. Many don't realize Majority that Served in Vietnam Volunteered, over 2/3. Those Served during WW2 90% had to be Drafted. Not to take away from any of them. US ARMY(Ret)-28yrs

I have a better understanding of what he would talk about, now that I am older. But, not all of it. I definitely understand enough about it, now, though. But, I heard about the way that they were treated, when they stepped back on American soil. And, he also told me about what Jane Fonda did to his military brother's over there, as well. So, I didn't get the sugarcoated and watered-down version, that so many lightly tread on talking about, either. I got the details, that were not mentioned on the TV, or in the classroom. Unfortunately, I am not able to go into the detail of it on here, or I will be banned from my account. Let's just say, that she is definitely one of the most hated people, of the military, at least those who were in the Vietnam War. And, rightfully so, as well. I can definitely say, that the look in his face and eye's changed, from the mear mention of her name. So, if you don't want to make a Vietnam War veteran mad at you? Definitely avoid bringing her up in the conversation, at all. He told me, that the closest movie, that reminded him of the experience of being over there, was the one with Charlie Sheen in it. I forget the name of it, at the moment. But, he said, that if I want to know what it was like over there? Watch the movie. I can definitely say, that it's not for the faint of heart, that is definitely sure...

A Cousin, Army 1st Medical unit in Kuwait-wrote him, sent clothespins. Friend USS Yorktown, lots of letters too. then, wanted to head up a pen pal exchange wNavy Carrier Vinson in my Daughter's Kindergarten class- after 9/11, bought the stamped postcards & THE SCHOOL wouldn't approve it! Can u believe that BS? An innocent letter, from sweet babies who WANTED to Thank our Soldiers, hopefully brighten up their day. Kids that seen up close & semi personal, didn't really understand...yet hearts in the right place. Sir, I honor & salute you, wish you all the good you SO deserve!

Hope you are doing well. My brother who was my best friend died of a heroin overdose. I saw him struggle with it for years. One time he couldn't stop crying because he said that he messed up, made a mistake, and wished he could go back before all the drugs. It was heartbreaking to see that. I had just turned 21 at the time didn't know how to process my emotions. drank heavily for 9 years until I developed liver problems. Then finally I quit everything cold turkey nicotine and drinking. I finally got a slight glimpse of the pain and suffering my brother went through and realized it isn't worth losing my life and it is not what he would've wanted. Point is we both loved listening to AiC together and I often listen to them now and sometimes cry for my brother. The beauty of AiC is incredible and I'm glad it helps you too.

His father was never able to deal with his own trauma and consequently this affected the relationship between father / son. I do not think this is the model that any family should use. Rather, I think their situation is quite tragic, and because of this, we should staunchly oppose war because of the horrific damage it causes.

My dad was there, too. He was also a "real" vet. 1st Cav (airmobile) and saw lots of combat and lots of people in his company killed. He never would talk to me about it. He died young, age 53.
