Brother in law was Brown Water Navy, multiple tours, retired Chief Warrant, died of cancer- Agent Orange... I was USNR, 67', 68', piece of 69'... Sealion. No glory here for me, but so many in our gen experienced much glory. In college, UofF, Gainesville, I hooked up with a 2 Bronze and a Silver Star awarded Army Sgt., whose father was a retired Col., who flew B-29's in WWII and Korea. We sat at Tiger Hall, in 70' and watched SDS take over the Admin. Bldg, as thousands Marched at night with lit candles. The war protests. He was among those used for bait to draw out enemy contact. He experienced Tet, 68'. That's about all he ever said about it and I never asked either. He was a poster child for PTSD. HARD to believe, it was so long ago, but every war since, has ended the same, but the cost of admission was never cheap.

My dad was 19 years old when he went to ‘Nam in ‘69. Marine Special Forces Recon. Thought when he entered he was saving our freedom. The buddy he enlisted with leg got blown off. He also got spit on when he came home and turned into a hippy with long hair. Those that knew him before said he was never the same. Struggled with drugs the rest of his life. Still had a heart of gold for others. He died in 2020 from Agent Orange exposure. That war took so much. Miss him everyday.

My step grandfather somehow survived the first wave on omaha beach without a scratch. He was later hit twice during the battle of the bulge. Every now and then if he got some wine in him he would make a general statement about the war but wouldn't give details saying it was "too bloody". He went to see saving private ryan by himself after hearing how realistic it was. All he said about it was he cried the whole time thinking about his buddies getting mowed down on that beach and that while it was probably the most accurate movie he ever saw, reality was much much worse. No one should experience even once what these combat soldiers faced on a daily basis yet humanity still finds ways to get into wars. Miss you Papa Tony.

as a product of the ww2 generation i concur. i lived in s. fl for a long time. i was with the gov. i ran into countless vets from the usa and germany. it didnt matter which side u were on the stories i heard were brutal. the most brutal was a former waffen ss guy who served at the russian front. it was ancient hatred from both sides. i have forgotten about these brave men from both sides who did what they had to do. thanks for making me remember what none of us should forget.

For those who don’t know: The M60 machine gun had a muzzle flash that resembled a roosters tail. Machine gunners in Vietnam were referred to as “roosters”. From the start of a gunfight, machine gunners life spans were about 7 seconds in Vietnam…To this day, this song is an anthem in the Marine Corps. Every Marine infantryman has sat in the barracks with 10 of his friends drinking and singing this song together. I know because I was(still am) one of those guys. Semper fi.

My father was 101st Airborne from about 1954-1967. KIA at 31 years old. I've spent my Life (37 years with Department of Defense) serving my country. My dad will be forever young to me and I'm 60. Vietnam may have been a mistake for us to get involved in, but show some thanks and sympathy for the guys who served. More Vietnam vets died by the mid 1990's than actually died in the war itself. Booze, drugs, suicide and car "accidents". That stinking war stole a LOT more than my father. It destroyed a million American families and several million Vietnamese families. My first tour in Iraq in 05 we were jamming out to this song doing weapons maintenance on our trucks. A civilian contractor wandered over and like us he was an Infantry Marine who volunteered for 2 tours in Nam. He didn't say too much about it but when he left he shook each of our hands and said he was grateful for our service and sacrifice. I said we should be thanking him for his service and I remember his choked up response was "Service for what?". 2 trips in Iraq and 6+ years in Afghanistan and after August 15th I know exactly what he meant. My dad actually told me the meaning of this song a while back, just listened to it because I wanted to and it seems he told me correctly what it's about judging by the comments. But this song now reminds me of an experience I had when I met a Vietnam war vet walking through this little park (which me and friends skateboard at) to get to this store near by. He asked which way the particular store he wanted to go was. I directed him but before he started to walk away I noticed he had a hat on saying Vietnam war veteran or something and that's when I said "thank you for your service" and the old man was very appreciative that I said that because he told me after that he didn't used to and still never has been thanked too much for fighting in Vietnam. He explained that when him and his buddies got home they were called baby killers and people hated them for fighting there. Now this song with that particular lyric "they spit on me in my homeland" always reminds me of that man I met that day

My grandpa was in Vietnam he lost both of his legs up to his hips and was in a wheelchair all his life. He would cry whenever he would see or hear any war movies or music. My mom told me of an incident that happened when she was young he freaked out one day during dinner at the table. He threw a glass and plate at my grandmother and took a knife and jumped out of his chair and started crawling away with the knife in his hand thinking they were suicide bombers. He passed away last year but he was never the same and never told me or my mom about it and only told a few details to my grandmother about what happened over their. When my mom died, I found a shoebox of the letters he wrote during his tour of duty there still in the air mail envelopes. This song meant a great deal to many- I made my dad a cd with this song on it because he was a Vietnam war vet (he was a medic and a sniper)- I was his little girl but throughout my life we always remained close- there wasn’t a day that went by that I didn’t see or talk with him. My uncle was in WWII. He absolutely never talked about it, ever. He never went to parades and never got with his fellow vets. He kept it all inside. Nothing in he and my aunt's house was ever displayed that gave hint of his service. There were no veterans hats on his head. He was a very hard working and quiet man. It wasn't until he died in his 80's did I learn that he and 102 fellow soldiers stormed one of those islands off Japan(sorry not sure which one) and only he and one other guy made it out alive. I just can't imagine going through something like that, coming home and trying to live a normal life and raise three kids.

This song always makes me think about my father, who made it through five years of WW2 (Canadian, started in 1940 after the Brits started in 1939), mostly in France and Italy. I was told that when he got home he gave away his hunting rifles and fishing equipment; he wouldn't even kill a fly or mosquito after that, he just swished them away. He was a good father for someone so hurt psychologically by the insanity of war; he said war is a hell no one should be subjected to.

My dad's best friend did the same after returning from the war in the Pacific. He had an amazing collection of historic guns, but got rid of them all and started collecting arrowheads. Died of alcoholism, and the cause didn't hit me until after the Vietnam war. RIP Bud Carpenter.

The only person that came into my mind whenever I listen to this song is an English teacher but not just anyone... I first known him at a language center somewhere in Bangkok after a low grade in an English exam and was sent there by my parents. It was pretty boring learning 2 hours of English every weekday on a holiday and HE knew that, he always cheer me up by bringing snacks in, telling jokes, teach songs i.e. Yellow River and best of all talking about his experiences in Vietnam. I could still remember him talking about how lucky he was being selected as an engineer at a hangar in NAM, and spending his days repairing air-crafts. Until one day he wasn't there anymore, I asked the staffs again and again 'Where did he go?' and they told me he was very sick and went back to recover at the States, 5 years later, it is today that I got told that he passed away peacefully and man, I wished I knew him earlier. Thanks for being the best teacher ever and a true american warrior Mr. Frank Ford, even though you are not here anymore but you will never be forgotten and always live in my memories forever. P.S. You can visit him on facebook as well, after all the hard times in NAM he sure still loves to visit that god damn place! R.I.P.

I'm sorry for you loss. It sounds like he was a great teacher and wonderful person. I think he went back to make amends. Those who repair aircraft are the reason the planes can drop bombs. He might not have been infantry or dropping the bomb, but he was still killing. Some guys felt extremely guilty that they were responsible for a village, and everyone in it, being obliterated because the village was "suspected of harboring VC". Those villagers did exactly what the VC told them to do, or everyone died in horrific ways.

My husband was in Vietnam in TET 68 with the 3/3/3 Marines. Came back and in 1981 we met and was married, both in the Army then. Gave birth to his only son. Son was 27 when his dad died. He argued with him, fought him but he loved his father. He's now married and is a father to a little girl. It hurt so much he didn't live long enough to enjoy the birth of his granddaughter. His demons got the best of him.

My great grandfather laid out rice tarp in his shop, called my father to come help him with something, then he used a rifle to take his life at 94 years old. I wonder sometimes if it was one thing, two things, or many things that led him down that path. Sweetest, kindest man I’ve ever met in my life. Never heard him curse or get angry once. But I think WW2 and losing his wife took a heavy toll on him. I remember asking him about WW2 one time and he told me how he remembered being able to see the faces of the Japanese men as they jammed the stick down and rammed their planes into the smoke stacks. He was a gunner captain. He would’ve been 100 years old this year.

James Melton My uncle Dee was a really big guy and when he came back from Vietnam you did NOT want to sneak up and try to surprise him because he would spin and bulrush people and hurt someone.and he hated it beacause he was so worried he would smash someone's nose into their skull or something. That gave him so much grief, sometimes he was so upset he would tear up... you couldn't ask for a better man, even after that. Your dad's story made Dee pop into my mind immediately. He's gone now, he's missed.

I can safely say that this is one of the most badass songs I've ever heard. The first line, "they haven’t found a way to kill me yet," gives me shivers every time. The flowing guitar building up in the intro before the electric guitars break into a cascade of hard rock awesomeness. The vocals are incredible, the musicians know what they're doing. This song goes heavier than anything I've encountered. So much so that I had to write a comment about it on KZbin.

The part that resonates with me is "they spit on me in my homeland..." I was in elementary school living in Hawaii after 3 years in Japan where my dad would go to Da Nang for months. Some little shit kid called my dad...MY DAD...a baby killer. I slapped him upside the head even though he was bigger than me LOL. Definitely the daughter of a naval aviator! What our military did was amazing and if and when they came home they went and still go through shit. It is horrible. This song meant something else to me. When I was an addict being trafficked I would play this or Metallica fade to black before I would do anything. Not sure why but it helped me find a center in my own being. I had to go toe to toe a thousand times unnarmed with my apponate twice my size and be the one coming out ahead. This is meant to be a compliment, I swear. Alice in Chains is a blues band playing metal. Imagine Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, or Howlin Wolf singing this song and it would fit. Layne just amplifies that. It's awesome.

Howlin Wolf woulda made it faster and he woulda gone into that high pitch moaning in the chorus. Muddy Waters woulda made it a bit slower, with a really trippy electric guitar riff, and some really thick dry drums, singing with that bassy-throaty style. It would be very spiritual. John Lee Hooker woulda made it stripped down, just him and an electric, maybe some clapping, and he would throw in these little improvised licks all over, and the rhythm would be totally unique, something unreplicate. JLH woulda fucked with the melody a lot, with a clean low voice tone.

Hope you are doing well. My brother who was my best friend died of a heroin overdose. I saw him struggle with it for years. One time he couldn't stop crying because he said that he messed up, made a mistake, and wished he could go back before all the drugs. It was heartbreaking to see that. I had just turned 21 at the time didn't know how to process my emotions. drank heavily for 9 years until I developed liver problems. Then finally I quit everything cold turkey nicotine and drinking. I finally got a slight glimpse of the pain and suffering my brother went through and realized it isn't worth losing my life and it is not what he would've wanted. Point is we both loved listening to AiC together and I often listen to them now and sometimes cry for my brother. The beauty of AiC is incredible and I'm glad it helps you too.

Vietnam & Cambodia were cruel, heartless, autocrats that turned little Cambodian boys and girls into killing machines. They produced killers like we produced Jets and tanks! Our US Soldiers had never encountered such a conundrum before.... and it demoralized them. It didn't compute, and we mired down. Just so anybody who reads this knows, the brainwashing capabilities of the Asian Communist Regime is still alive and well...they still hate us Americans. (I think it is envy; 'Covetnous' like in the 10 commandments) And these same autocrats, a couple generations down, are HERE doing their dirty-work on our soil. Don't kid yourselves that "THAT war is done and gone... We are at peace with the Communists of the world" Oh no. NOT ON YOUR LIFE. Even though Democrat politicians, like John Kerry, go and buy property in Vietnam... Look around at the anti-American sentiments erupting in this blessed country today...
