I used ALICE back in the late 1980's when i was in the Army. It might have had some ability for modularity, but that was during the heyday of 'dress-right-dress' ladder-climbing officers; everyone carried limited gear in exactly the same manner, irregardless of comfort, individual preference, etc... ALICE absolutely SUCKS when trying to use the Medium or Large ALICE pack (I use a different one now). However, given what's available now, I still prefer ALICE gear over MOLLE. There are starting to be more reports coming from 'high speed schools' and such about how when you go though "Jungle Phase", or "Jungle Warfare School in Africa", vines, sticks, twigs, etc..., have an amazing ability to reach in and pluck out just about every piece of gear that is 'secured' with velcro, or taco-bungee cords. When you do an assault course in the mud, velcro FAILS when it gets packed with mud. Those hi-speed open top taco mag holders, simply cake the mud in and will make whatever was in there, mags, tourniquet, whatever, nearly unusable. In a true ground fighting type of war, where troops are on foot, and not in vehicles, MOLLE has some severe limitations. OTOH, if most of your operations are mounted, MOLLE gear is second-to-none. As a civilian who is concerned about how things might go in my world, where I really might be out in the woods / mud / hiking long distances, ALICE is what still made the most sense for me. Just my $0.02.

High-speed has always been funny to me because you can get very high speed with a properly configured belt and harness as long as you train with it. I follow the NZSAS Vietnam practice. It's inspired by the older still M1956 pattern gear with an M1951 pattern X-strap harness, although I've been using nylon reproductions over the original canvas. If you can't find a reproduction M1951 X-strap harness you can use a nylon LC1 H-strap instead for the same effect. I have found it's better to have a stable belt system carrying the essentials (medical, repair, reloads, canteens) and a disposable day pack for the non-essentials (sleep system, rations) and nothing is more stable than an X-strap or H-strap. If you'd rather have more than four to six reloads on you, run a Chicom type chest rig beneath the harness. It all works together very well.

ALICE is made for a foot mobile force because it moves the weight to the hips and carries essentials for movement from patrol base to the objective. Of course it can be used in an AFV or IFV, but has comfort limitations which pushed towards using chest rigs or mags/gear mounted to armor. SADF chest rig is for vehicle mobile patrols and has lots of other side benefits and was used as end users saw fit. SADF battle vest is for foot mobile patrols and was used as end users saw fit. But is built for something of a field sustainment role. Replace those ALICE clips with zip ties. Lighter and less likely to lose gear. Also more comfortable.

My understanding is that the Pattern 83 chest rig was meant for use mainly with the large rucksack. You can't really wear the Pat. 83 vest with a backpack, so if you were going on multi day missions you wore the chest rig and ruck. If it was two days or less you wore the vest. Not saying chest rigs don't work better for vehicle stuff, because they do, but that's my rudimentary understanding on how the pieces of kit they had were used.

ALICE gear is a good solution for a draftee Army with potentially threatened supply lines. It really shines compared to modern gear for long treks through the mountains and jungles searching for elusive enemies. BTW, it’s a good idea to duct tape the Y harness clips to the belt shut. They can pop loose at inconvenient times.

I use mine for bushcraft projects and humidity makes it, the best option. Also the pads are Nylon, if you sweat into the LCII, the pads soak up your sweat and puff out a bunch, can carry a hatchet, food, 1/4 inch kit, portable jumper cables, food, maps and compass, in just the butt pouch. The weight distribution is a god sent in this rig.

Also, For Buttpack selection, Ive scrapped every single model you can think of on the market right now, and the winner is an (Eberlestock Multi Lid Pack) on Molle-Alice Converter connections. Best option at the moment, everything else is pretty junk-ish. Rothco Trainer (They dont come with the plastic sinch for the pull chord to close the bag, *They went that cheap* Thinking a slip knot, bowline, or tight square knot---to sinch the pullchord, even with the pack loaded full so the knot doesnt have room to move, the minute the pack jiggles, you're gonna take a nice 2 mile stroll, back for all your shit, laying on the forrest floor trail, feeling like a real winner. How much daylight do YOU have to spare to makeup for gear issues? The pack also kinda hangs a little too low-boy from the alice keeper stock position, and does not keep square form Low-Boi Jiggle Jiggles are a no go when youre trying to run. I like that satchell square ass form, thats where them 99 London Bridge packs, be expensive. Fox/Eagle Industries packs (Make you look like a Tokyo Fanatic E-Girl with a Mini Pokemon fan pack on your ass, You cant even boogie in the sticks with it, without feeling dumb, they are stupid.) Wanna-Be London Bridge, Vietnam Satchell copies. (It takes about 30 seconds of good rain to soak all of your dry gear, and make the rig heavier. Do you want more weight?) Get, the Eberlestock, Multi Lid pack. The loops, on the shells exterior allow to add some gauze pouches flipped upside down, a carribeaner with tape, and a shotgun rounds pouch, that you can simply reach at with your hand without fighting nothing. I dont like keeping the pouch on the shoulder straps, get in the way of ANYTHING. The Multi Lid is, AWESOME. Keeps everything inside dry, Plenty of room, doesnt droop like the other packs, more accessories you can attatch to the rear like I said. Also, I keep my rig Salvador loose. Importante'. The butt pack and belt line sit right above the tail bone, and instead of keeping the shoulder straps hook points to the belt up front, or right at my sides, I hook them maybe two holes off to the side of the butt pouch area, makes the shoulder straps super comfy, makes the rig feel much more natural and shaped to your spine, carry more stuff. Keep the belts diameter kinda open and wide at the waist instead of form fit,--- so you can fit, one more cool pouch or gadget cuz why not, dont let the rig pull your pants down either. Never understood the rig belt going above the belly button, sponge bob square pants lookin' ass. And last but not least (They now make A 12 mag, 1911, Molle Pouch) Hallelujah!

We still use it to this day in Brazil. I've served for about 9 years in the Amazon and there's simply nothing better to wear on that kind of environment. Here we product our on version of the kit, mainly replacing everything made of steel with velcro/ paracord and swapping the suspenders made of nylon to ones made of cordura, to improve the comfort and reduce weight. It's cheap, lightweight, durable, comfortable, offers the modularity required and most important doesn't overheat your body. You can use it with armor under or over the kit without major issues and while the rucksack is on your back. One important aspect is the lack of velcro in the pouches, wich for a muddy environment is great, as it keeps retention and doesn't deteriorate over time. Reloading fast or on the move is something that might seem difficult at the start if you are getting used to the pouches, but is possible with the proper training and the mag pouches can hold basically everything except AK47 mags. Overall a great piece to have

ALICE is pretty versatile. You can run your LBE high on your chest (like a chest rig) by tightening the straps. This can make it more form fitting which is good for running. NOTE this setup cannot use a butt pack and it helps to replace the ALICE clips on the rear shoulder straps with 50-50 cord (to prevent rubbing holes in your back) when wearing a ruck. Another method is to run the LBE low on the hips (or lower) with a buttpack. When sized correctly the buttpack can act as a shelf for the ruck, and help to distribute its weight. No matter the configuration, we always ensured the pouches were secured with ALICE clips and either gutted 50-50 cord or zip ties to the belt. This ensured the pouches were doublely secure to the belt. Before the days of dump pouches empty mag were placed in your undershirt. A t-shirt was always tucked into you pants under the camo blouse. The t-shirt would hold empty mags next to your chest until you got to an area to reload and replace mags in their pouches. All of this is METT-TC dependent and based on your mission. Make smart decisions!

I mentioned briefly in my video about how I like the slick front due to it helping you get low in the prone, and I really think this speaks to the useage of cover and individual infantry tactics over things like speed reloads and armor. And despite what some people think, all of these principles still apply today. Also thank you for making a much better video than mine hahaha.

ALICE is what I was issued & used all through the 1990s, and what I carried was set up basically as you have it for the first couple of years as an MP; pistol gear went away when I reclassed as a Cav Scout, then came back when my unit transitioned to the Bradley. I hit the surplus stores and got some M1956 gear that I mixed in with ALICE for my field rig (pistol mag pouch, suspenders, buttpack); the 1956 suspenders were more comfortable, the buttpack had a rubberized inner cover. Once you get used to it, it's no harder to get to your mags etc, the mags are better protected from the elements, and it's much easier to go prone or crawl in than any vest or MOLLE gear. Still use it today (though I swapped my ALICE rucks for a British Bergen ruck, much better design).

Alice was used way later than you think. The Guard used it until the 2010's or so in some places. It "might" still be used here and there. It's a great system in summer, maybe one of the best in hot/humid climes. Everything hangs off of you loosely and you're free to sweat your ass off at your leisure. Chest rigs suck for that primary reason.

Adding a little about the (M-84?) holster for the M-9 or other handguns; yes, the flap may impede your draw, but the flap is easy to flip over and Store between your body and pistol belt if need be. It’s easy to remove and reinstall as needed, and very easy to change from right hand to left, and vice vercsa. They even had a part for it to easily convert to a shoulder holster. But it was kind of floppy. AND it had a cleaning rod in a special slot. Sorry, probably more than anybody wanted to know about a holster.

Only saw officers and staff NCO’s with pistols back then. Back then there was troop movement on foot, not much in vehicles, like today. ALICE gear sucked when you were in vehicles, the modern gear is very vehicle friendly. Sometimes ran dual mag pouches on each side.

H harness and zip ties more comfortable, and you can green foam the pistol belt, or use a Condor, etc, velcro pistol belt for easy on the fly adjustment. I’ve used a combination of MOLLE and ALICE pouches on a Condor pistol belt without problems. And having an ALiCE ruck sitting on a butt pouch or mag pouch makes for easy transfer of weight to the hips. The harness belt system is cooler in the Summer and easier to doff and don for layering in the winter. Or used under a jacket. I’m a Cod War Sgt. Didn’t use it while in but I definitely have as a civilian. Heard many say that a chest rig causes a lot of aching backs in the sandbox . I found that to be true during my own training. Body armor and chest rigs seem to go together. My personal opinion is that an updated harness system is the way to go for our military and Patriots. A front plate carrier or vest should be separate from it. Rear plate should be able to slip into hydration carrier or assault pack or ruck. As a medic back then but now I use 3 lines of gear. Pistol belt for pistol: right side: holster, small pouch shades ear plugs, general pouch for white/ red light, eye care, gloves etc. Rear limb bleed kit. Left rear: SAW pouch for rain jacket or poncho, AR pouch for radio or 20oz water, kangaroo ouch one 30 round 556 and one Glock mag and last tourniquet pouch by belt buckle.

SA special forces comprised tier 1 recce units (1, 5 and 4 commando regiments - 4 being water orientated (ocean and rivers, etc). They were focussed mainly on extreme long distance remote reconnaissance. Then there were other specialist units, that worked with the bushman and ex Portuguese Fletcha personnel, such as the 31 and 32 batalion units. These focused also on cross border operations at a shallower level. The 32 guys sometimes used the chest webbing combined with an H harness belt rig supporting radios, more ammo, etc , in pre planned tactical assault operations. This increased their agility and speed.

This why the whole “war belt” system is around. It’s basically a modern Alice rig if you set it up that way. I was in from 98-05 and it was during the Alice Molle transition. Some of use used the Alice LBV as well. Don’t for get to zip tie your Alice pouches after you set up your rig, Alice clips will fail whenever you have to assault a bunker or trench lol.

If you look at the various "Jungle Rigs" or "Jungle Belt Kits" that are coming out recently (China?) there's a LOT of similarity to the classic LC-1/LC-2 web gear. Also, I think a modern version of the ALICE mag pouches would be greatly appreciated. Current pouches (like the elastic band retention pouches) were really designed to be worn flat against the chest and not along the waistline. Even the double decker pouches were meant to be worn on the chest rig/plate carrier. But, putting those on a belt and they can get cumbersome. Especially if you want to get six mags along the waist, it can take up a lot more real estate than the ALICE pouches.

I still use the Alice webbing and large ruck minus the large dopey L shape flashlight and Bianchi pistol holster.Canadian 82 pattern webbing is more durable but Alice gear is more utilitarian.Like the British I still prefer webbing over a plate Carrier try wearing a plate Carrier with all your pouches and Camelback with a ruck especially with a parka.I"ll wear a slick plate Carrier over my T shirt but under my coat then webbing over top.If I could get new alice gear in multicam tropic I'd buy everything tommoro.

Nice video. People on the group must realise that "Back in the Day" there were not many options available to infantrymen. There was no "Gucci" gear to purchase as an add on or swop out to issue gear. South African gear evolved to pattern 88. The SA. gear was designed for SA bush warfare TTP and weapns. Also used materials that were available at the time. Also affected by economic sanctions. The infantry gear was also designed for toughness, due to thornbush and issue to thousands of national servicemen ("Troop proof"). Brown because of Africa. Rucks were developed from civilian hiking rucks best practise at the time. Built to carry large amounts of gear and water over long distances. HD frames to allow heavier loads and airflow to the back. Army ponchos heavy duty thorn resistant material. The shoulder straps had loops to carry mortar bombs. The R4 chest rig was designed to be used with the ruck. It had a pull tab system to get the mags out. As I was am officer I modified mine to have a 9mm pistol on the LHS of the chest rig. The rig also had a built in map pouch at the rear of the ammo pouches and compass pouch on the front. The patrol harness was not normally used with the ruck sack. Mine was also modified for using on long patrols so as not to use the ruck. Special forces gear in SA was different to issue gear for the infantry. For instance, cammied, lighter weight, better design, less or no velcro for noise, use of toggles, etc.

Amazing video again! You are my favorite guntuber lately. If you are considering trying out some other oldschool gear, i recommend british 58 pattern webbing equipment! I use it quite alot, it just has this oldchool vibe i really dig :D Especially some SAS mods, where they got rid of the kindney pouches and rocked multiple "water bottle" pouches instead. Kinda looked like more modern PLCE webbing. And the mag pouches will take AK magazines as well as AR. Take care!

A very good point is made here with the SADF pattern 83 chest rig not working well with AR-15 magazines because the rig was originally set up for a Galil rifle. I switched to a surplus German System-95 (KTS-95) belt with G3 mag pouches for my PTR-91 after trying to use a MOLLE vest with AR-10/SR-25 magazine pouches and the difference was significant. Mixing-&-matching gear has limits. The firearm(s) you choose should dictate the type of fighting gear you get for it.

In '08-'10 USMC none of this was issued but if you were smart you went and bought it and used it for your load bearing equipment. That way when you were in a situation where you had to keep your body armor on but didn't necessarily need your mags and whatnot (like standing guard or riding in a vehicle or something), you could take the belt off and not have to be toting all the weight all the time like you would be if you just strapped the issued MOLLE pouches to your body armor. To this day I 100% prefer ALICE gear over MOLLE and it's still what I run, even though I missed the era where it was the issued equipment.

Secure your Alice clips with stainless steel wire or plastic zip ties, then pouches won't fly off when running or crawling. Pad the inside of the belt with a strip of material cut from a puss pad sleeping mat secured with 100 mph tape, that way the Alice clips wont wear a hole in your sides on a long ruck. Also moving the buckle of the pistol belt to the rear (with a H harness) or kidney area (with a Y harness) allows this kit to be run as a poor man's chest rig. Which ever you do, build it with full mags, water bottles or canteens, and pouches, so you can build in balanced load. Heavy items to the sides of your body, soft items to front. The balance will change as you expend ammo and water but it is what it is, shift and maintain as best you can. If you wear the pistol belt above the belly button the gear won't interfere with running or tire your legs out by hitting your thighs when climbing hills... Good idea to dump the butt pack and run an assault pack. Bout all I can think for now, appreciate your vids Bro!

Hey, just wanted to ask what size MALICE mounting you used for your pistol mag pouch. I see that esstac has different types of pouches and also mounting systems. Might just be some personal confusion as I've not added much to my belt yet. I'm using some Swedish gear that's similar to ALICE and wanted some options to carry CZ 75 magazines. Thanks for showing off the ongoing capabilities of the ALICE system by the way. It still has potential!
