They were still in their mid 30's here! Time sure does fly by. I was just happy to see them still releasing a new album in 1997 only 2 years after Alan left and just a year after Dave's overdose. Ultra and the Singles Tour the following year were great, but going into the 2000s I began to see that Alan left a huge musical void that can never be replaced in DM.

It was a nice long interview and it would have been interesting to hear, if you could. I really liked the interviewer though and he asked some good questions. I also like the other members of the band too, especially Martin. He's a genius talent and has a beautiful voice and I love it when he and Dave harmonize together. I'm just glad that Dave got it together and is still rocking it out in 2022!

@@DxModel219 Honestly, I just re-discovered them about 2 years ago. I used to love their music on MTV and the radio, but was raising 2 sons and had gone back to school for nursing. I didn't know anything about the members, but now that I've had the time, I see that Alan was a huge part of their success. He is SO talented!

Actually I don’t understand why are some of English-speaking people here so mad about this German dubbing? This is an interview made for a German TV by a German interviewer 🤷🏻‍♀️ I know that it could be very annoying and uncomfortable not to understand what is talking about in such interesting interview, but you have to respect it. I am not angry that almost everything is in English and not in my languages. Even Martin Gore himself speaks German 😄

Gore’s probably realising from that point the band’s best days are behind it and they’d all allowed their greatest studio asset (Alan) to slip away because of a mixture of their own laziness, selfishness, arrogance and egos. Despite what Wilder says, I think there’s a good chance he’d still be in the band today if the other three had ever taken the time to express gratitude to him for the crazy amounts of extra work he put in at the time. Such a shame really.

I think the way Dave describes things is somehow insensitive…(About Alan) besides, he claims the most of interview time for himself - About 3 min. describing his personality - whereby the important member of DM is actually Martin. He´d have a lot to tell. Dave wouldn´t let him.... At least he admits he's immensely egocentric. That is something....on the way to a better karma.

Alan walked away when Dave was hooked on Heroin Fletch was having a breakdown and Martin was drinking if he had cared about them he would have stayed. That's why they're so close they went through the fire and came out the other side

+Inga M. Yes, actually. Depeche Mode is the band's Name. Interview is a commonly used word in the German language. And April is...well April in both German AND English. 1997 is a number and VH1 the Channel's name. So you cannot claim that the title was intentionally fooling you into believing that this was going to be an English video. You just had bad luck.

Dave's favorite video (or one of them) is Enjoy The Silence. Hated it at the beginning because of the dressup Fletch said they do suffer from the pressure: perfect sounds, perfect songs, perfect shows, perfect interviews...it's inhuman Dave opened up about his drug abuse and massive problems. Wanted "the fix" asap, feeling happy as soon as the rush kicked in...explained it all

Although they have never admitted it, they were deeply hurt by his departure but always put on a front that they were indifferent & couldn’t give a shit. So sick of them trashing Alan. He was the architect of their success and rightfully got tired of the toxicity, dysfunction, childish communication, drug use, alcohol, and absurd workload without commensurate acknowledgement. Just look at the quality of their work from Ultra onwards -- it's Demo Mode, and often downright unlistenable. Calling Americans "nazis" during their unlistenable Spirit album was the cherry on top. Fletch should have his very own wing at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the longest tenured barnacle with no musical talent or input. Way to ruin the band, jerks.
