I have never liked Brahams much... but I have always loved Alicia de Larrocha. Listening to her performance, just the first few chords I got goosebumps all over. How much of a difference it makes to listen music in the hands of an amazing performer. What a legacy.
Difficile de dire ce que je ressens.... mais j’ai rarement (voire jamais!!) entendu plus belle version! Stupéfiant !

I have always thought that nobody with small hands could ever play this concert; it is a really strong, long and hard one, with opened chords everytime! She is just brilliant!

María Valverde I thought the same. Her vision ruled her anatomy!! Just miraculous

An outstanding performance! The second movement is electrifying... Wow - de Larrocha and Previn nailed it! I can't believe only 1600+ people have listened to this. They don't know what they're missing.

Robert Cohn ...I think what you mean to say is that the people who HAVEN'T listened to this don't know what they're missing!!😊😋

In a way, this performance reminds me of Horowitz's Chopin. That is, by daring to bring out and expose to the public (with the utmost respect and enthusiasm) the melancholy sentiments that the composer and his music have made their spirit, they prove that they are not just elegant, harmless salon pieces. It is very rare to hear such a courageous performance of the Brahms concerto (the more radical version by György Sándor transformed Brahms into an epic writer!), and it is very gratifying!

Wow a true virtuoso! Blown away! So glad I discovered this! I heard Yuja Wang playing this in a concert last year and it was lacking in grace and soul.. Now hearing this, makes up for my disappointment. I finally found one version of this concerto that I truly love. Thank you for uploading !

Together with Arrau probably the grandest interpretations in recording history. Both of Delarrochas recordings are live!......unbelievable......one with Jochum and this one with Previn.

Give the Fischer/Furtwängler war-recording a hearing, especially concerning the magic slow movement, and also the Gilels/Reiner.

The Jochum/de Larrocha is perhaps the greatest B-flat I have heard. She is on fire in both the Previn and the Jochum, and she seems to ignite and elevate both conductors.

We are greatly in debt to the AdL Channel. Fascinating to hear this and the Jochum in juxtaposition. Both are superb, with interesting inflections and emphases. The Jochum is of course on Weitblick, but I wonder if the Previn has ever appeared on cd. Previn has more punch than I would have expected.

No, the Previn has never appeared on CD.

I adore AdL over ever other pianist, past or present, but this concerto has been done better with others (Sokolov's live performance--also on YT--comes to mind)...I think the poor recording of the piano probably has a lot to do with it...still it's amazing that she was able to play this monster of a concerto...
@jubalvaleriohernandez7068 жыл бұрын
Specially with those short hands she had. When she was young, Frank Marshall had to teach her how to make enlarging exercises of the hands in order to play Brahms and Rachmnaninoff. It's remarkable how she managed to perform like she did.
@pamos19497 жыл бұрын
But not forgetting the exceptional length of her little finger and her rangy thumb knuckle joint which allowed a very large stretch indeed between forefinger and thumb. Arrau also had the latter, and that allowed to stretch an octave between the fore and the thumb.
@davepipe7 жыл бұрын
Correct, Philip. As Alicia showed me, what is important is not the length of the fingers, but the ability to stretch-out the hand to cover an octave from the thumb to the little finger!
@BachIdealized3 жыл бұрын
You'd think with small hands (apparently) the octave-playing in the last movement would be a little imprecise. But no, not in the least. Also, just a fantastic recording!
