Some color to add from someone who was there (and it seems like yesterday though it was so long ago). This was one of her best recitals, and the audience went absolutely wild. The Faschingsschwank was, I think, a new piece for her, and it was great. At the end of the concert, I went to the green room to get my autograph and as we were waiting for her to start signing, a woman went to the front of the line an announced she was Artur Rubinstein's daughter. "Which one?" asked Alicia, and the response was "the doctor". Well, I could obviously forgive the line cutting, especially since Ms. Rubinstein told us how much her dad admired Alicia's artistry and how big her heart was to play such a program. It was unforgettable, and may have been the end of a chapter/era as there weren't many (if any) programs like this any longer from her, nor with this level of abandon or virtuosity.

Oh, forgot to say that a man sitting in front of me said he expected her to play the Toccata, Op. 7 as an encore, and my heart skipped a beat, but that was not to be.

@@nyc2cal902 Somehow I don't think she could pull off the Toccata as well as the main pieces on the program...doesn't seem like a piece that would appeal to her... although if she was able to master a knuckle buster like the Albeniz Iberia better than anyone else (and i think this is still true today), I think she would be more than capable of playing the Toccata (one of my least favorite Schuman pieces).

I think she saved her practice time for pieces that had commensurate musical value and perhaps the Toccata doesn’t compared with its vast demands. I’m sure as you are it was well within her technical ability, yet her manager once commented that she didn’t play the Grieg concerto because she could never play a certain passage to her satisfaction and that floored me.

@@nyc2cal902 Speaking of Grieg, I wish that she had recorded a disc of the Lyric Pieces, as they would lend themselves well to her unique interpretive approach, not to mention her mastery of color and beautiful piano tone...I can identify any AdL performance as being by her, due to these qualities (plus her sense of rhythm)..

I remember this concert very well from my student days. I was especially looking forward to hearing Alicia's Faschingsschwank, a work I don't believe she had played in NYC previously or recorded. Originally, the program as advertised was to include the Kinderszenen, so I was especially gratified by the heart-rending encore she offered of "Kind in Einschlummern" from that suite. She was on fire for the entire program, playing with a kind of spontaneous abandon which transcended her work in the recording studio. Thanks for sharing!

the single most brilliant performance of Carnival I've every heard...anyone who previously thought her playing was dainty and small scaled should listen to this...she has rarely sounded as uninhibited as she did on this occasion..this performance should be known by all lovers of great pianism...no wonder the audience demanded 5 encores!!

this performance is similar in interpretive approach to her two recordings, but with that "extra something" that only came out in her live performances...

I also remember an absolutely wonderful--and note perfect--live performance of the Schuman concerto with the Los Angeles or San Fran Phil..broadcast over the radio...never been matched even though everyone plays it...I used to have a recording until I lost it...her way with Schuman was special...

To have known her slightly was a joy. I watched wide-eyed as she practiced the Liszt Sonata, her tiny hands encompassing its spans marvelously.

The Liszt Sonata was another piece she played brilliantly--I'm tempted to say better than anyone else--at least based on her live performance in Avery Fisher Hall a decade earlier...

Larrocha y Argerich se parecen muchísimo en su manera de abordar Schumann. Bravo Alicia y que vivas eternamente en nuestros corazones.

Actually, I think Argerich and AdL's approach to anything they played was vastly different...Argerich was and is a fireball, while DeLarrocha was magnificently dignified in whatever either of them played...but I doubt Martha could have given a performance of the Op. 9 to match this one...

This was a real "fiesta" I wished I was there in 1987. The Carnaval, The Faschungschwank aus Wien as wel as the amazing Soler sonata, and the Spanish encores. She was really on fire this evening. Never heard before this Opus 8 by Schumann; maybe a first attempt to a piano concerto? Thanks for publishing this gem. Not only her technique was amazing, but every note she played was in balance and goes directly to your heart! I think she was the most 'al round' pianist I ever heard. As beside the standard repertoire she played almost the complete Spanish piano music. There is no other pianist who did this. She will be missed for ever.🎼😥🙏

The Allegro was the first moment of a sonata that was never completed. Schumann didn't like the work, and it's not often played, but is a beautiful piece.

Thank you so much for sharing this! It may have "poor sound" but this is the real deal and energy of a live performance. And this is the real sound one gets from a concert hall. I think cd's help the career of an artist in his/her lifetime, but this live recitals make a great artist's legend even bigger. Thanks again!

It's Carnaval, not Carnival! But wonderful performance nonetheless.
