Prince composed and arranged this . He sings with a falsetto voice so he must have known it was made for a woman.Years later Alicia asked to cover it . When Prince heard her version, he called her , and said the song now belongs to her , which is the biggest compliment he could pay her !!

I would like to give additional data to your comment. Prince didn't called Alicia, it was her to call Prince to ask for permission to sing his song because he didn't allow others to sing his songs. Prince told her that he had being watching her and was ok with her singing it. This story was told by Alicia at one of her concerts where she played the song after he died. The way she tells the story is very cute, you should google it.

Prince didn't "rock this so hard", he actually sang it quite softly in a piano driven, falsetto vocal. All three artists performed the song well and I enjoy all of them regularly. Prince gets most of the credit since it is HIS song first and foremost. Stephanie Mills simply has the best vocal ability of the 3 singers in question and that comes through in her version of this song. As good and original as Prince and Keys are, neither of them could possibly out-sing Stephanie Mills.

To this day I love this version more as opposed to the studio version. She does incredible doing it live too. Forever a Alicia Keys fan for life ever since she dropped her first album which was a true foundation coming up during my junior year in high school.
