I've been considering a Waldorf School for my kid but from all my research, it seems the school has a cult-ish bent with strange ceremonies and rituals.

That is what it may be look like in the begging but once you get to research and learn about what it really is then you will see is so magical and beautiful

I encourage you to read about the theories of anthroposophy. Rudolf Steiner was the creator of biodynamic farming. Spirituality is not a bad thing. The theories surrounding this philosophy are about grounding the child within their own being so that they are best prepared to face the world. I would say, of course depending on what school you’re looking at and where, but Waldorf isn’t what it used to be. The extreme use of devices and social media in our society today, I believe, have contaminated children’s minds and because addiction to media is so insidious, it’s too difficult for the school to cope with in order to provide an authentic Steiner experience for children especially as they approach adolescence. I used to really push back against the media restrictions as a child, but looking back they were a blessing because my memories of my Waldorf education and that part of my childhood are beautiful and so rich with time in nature and so much wonder and magic.

It’s calming. Kids these days are so anxious at school and in public. Why wouldn’t you want to do something that brings a peaceful atmosphere into your education? It’s about spirit, mind and body, not just facts.

They still teach all the core curriculums, it's just not in the harsh industrialized setting that is now the norm of public schools

Education is addressed through heart and hands along with head. Academic learning is supported through relevant artistic work and movement. All human senses are used and concepts learnt through their interconnectedness. For example, math multiplication tables can be done through a story of how something grows bigger or procreates in an order, it can be done through rhythmic stamping of the feet and clapping through the multiples in an order so the children learn through their limbs as well, not just their faculty of memory. Many methods used in Waldorf education has helped children from mainstream schools who’ve had challenges.

What is cultish about putting lavender in the water? It's relaxing. This education is for the child and no other education understands the developmental needs of children like Waldorf does. You can't just teach to the head, children need to move and experience things. Concepts are like feeding children stones when they are young. I encourage you to visit a Waldorf school!
