It still surprised me to find out that was John Rhys Davies as Man Ray. I loved when I got an autograph from him last year. Also, if you havent seen it yet, @AliciaxLife, and you get the chance, Aladdin and the King of Thieves also features John Rhys Davies, as Cassim, the King of Thieves/Aladdin's father.

Of course in the long run it still wouldn't get rid of the problem of people basing their world views on those replicated stereotypes, but as long as you only do that within a very small group and not publically... Well for me this episode lacks a real conclusion for Sandy, because why would the stereotypes suddenly vanish at the end? The townsfolk had already internalized them at this point. When that one mother grabbed her kid away from Sandy, what she said wasn't her replicating a joke. It was her actually believing in it. The damage had been done. Spongebob switching to jokes that are actually based in facts, rather than making something up about Sandy is definitely better than what he did before. I mean the others could laugh about themselves because they knew it was true. Mr. Krabs even said that himself. But realistically Sandy would still have to live with the stereotypes Spongebob had created about her.

Yeah, that's what I like about it. Sandy was willing to let the jokes go at first. It became a problem when they singled her out, and led to people treating her worse. It's easy to say "they're just jokes," when you're not the person stuck being the punchline to every single one of them. I also like how at first, SpongeBob tried to have his cake and eat it too. He kept singling her out for jokes, then thought that just because he added a little "shoutout to Sandy" at the end, it made it okay to completely disregard her feelings. Great job of showing both where the problem stems from, and what the wrong way to solve it is.

He told us that he hides his accent if he talked like a hick (he said that word I didn’t) which was the norm for his part of the State no one would take him serious and that genuinely made me sad. Funny thing, in a 2022 interview, Walt Dohrn, one of the writers of Squirrel Jokes, was asked his thoughts on the episode due to it trending on Twitter thanks to the controversy of Dave Chappelle's transphobic jokes. Dohrn thought the ending was a nice sentiment, but wished there was a greater emphasis on the responsibilty to not perpetuate negative stereotypes. He said that over the years, the whole "equal opportunity" mentality has proven to cause harm, and even included self deprecation as being potentialy harmful, as people may feel bad if they share the qualities you make fun of yourself for having. It's kind of interesting that people prop this episode up for having a progressive message, yet one of its own writers agreed with an interviewer that it carries a very "2000s South Park-era resolution", and doesn't reflect modern ideas. It shows that even lukewarm progressive takes inspired by 80s stand up acts can seem like aspirational examples when lined up against beliefs that still exist 20 years after the writers were inspired to condemn them.

"it's precisely when humor is offensive that we need it most! Comedy should provoke. It should blast through prejudices, challenge preconceptions. Comedy should always leave you different than when it found you. Sure humor can hurt - even alienate - but the risk is better than the alternative; a steady diet of innocuous, childproof, flavorless mush. Demand to be challenged, to be offended, to be treated like thinking, reasoning adults! And raise your children to be the same! Don't let a comedian, a network, a congressional committee, or an evil genius take away your freedom to laugh at whatever you want!" ~Jason Alexander, Duckman. offensive humor/insult comedy is an art, not unlike comedy in general. if you do it, you can't just cherry pick and even make shit up. otherwise, you risk making that group or that race just that, a means for humor at their expense. but when you make fun of yourself, and others alongside that (and know how to do it) that's when you hit the mark. "but this one comic made offensive jokes about my group" yes, but they also did it about other groups as well. nobody's special, nobody's precious.

I'm probably still to naive for adult thought in Spongebob. I never thought about racism in the Squirrel episode. I just thought that Spongebob is a (in KZbin terms) jerk towards Sandy. Not that it could go way deeper. (But i personally don't think there was supposed to be a political undertone in that episode, just an ethic one)
@KristopherPrime13 күн бұрын
it really isn't political. it's just a wonderfully timeless message to make jokes about everyone and either with actual truth sprinkled in or based on stereotypes. EVERYONE on the receiving end. sadly, i don't think leftists will get that lesson. instead, all comedy has to be about straights, whites, christians, males, or any other combo while "marginalized" groups are not permitted to be included in comedy unless you are part of said group.

Contrary to what some may think, the Southern US is pretty diverse and welcoming, regardless of any physical traits: at least in places like Florida and Texas. Houston for example, is more racially diverse than NYC - and hosts one of the largest pride parades in North America, and as a Texan - most of the major cities are very much pro-progressive. Can't speak for the rest of the South, but you only ever see stereotypical Southerners in more rural towns, or the occasional boomer with a Southern Doll accent. That's all I had to say.
