Even then, he recognizes the value of success and struggle. He knows the taste of Sweet Victory (band episode), and sympathizes with the feeling of inescapable failure (pizza delivery). In the end of the day he does his job, plays his clarinet, paints, and struggles on, remaining hopeful. Call it what you will, but neither of their lives are a mistake.
