"Why did you lose?" That question is SUPER important. Bakugo can't accept losing, he will ALWAYS win in his mind....yet the power that Deku received, was the power of the man that Bakugo looked up to above everyone else. That power CAN'T lose. So even as he can't accept losing to Deku, he's admonishing Deku that he can't let that power down by losing.

I've waited until I reached this particular episode of binging Alicia's reactions to this series to comment this despite her not being spoiled anymore. But out of all the reactors I've watched react to this series, I've never seen anyone catch on and latch onto Bakugou's emotional turmoil so accurately and quickly. From season 1 episode 5, she was super spot on. And now seeing her predictions and analysis pay off in this episode is cathartic.

Man.. this is definitely one of the my favorite episodes ever. Bakugo is SUCH a good character. But also like, man, he was fighting without giving Deku even a MOMENT to think, I think he is definitely the best in the class, maybe in the entire series, at just thinking completely instantly. Mid-action, pure reaction thinking. It's so impressive, I love his fights so much. The dialogue between them.. so good, every quote they say. I do still personally think the writing of the english dub is a lot better than the writing of the english sub for this show. "All Might was my hero, but YOU were the one actually in my life." No matter the version, the way they talked to each other, just hits so hard. The fact that YOU CALLED IT, even though Bakugo won the fight, he was still not satisfied. "Why did you lose?" Man SUCH A PERFECT EPISODE in sooo many aspects.

This episode was fantastic for so many reasons. The fight choreography yes, but the character emotions, the voice acting, the look we get into Bakugo's psyche - which you had the measure of the ENTIRE time Alicia, never not going to be amazed by that - and a really healthy response by both Dad Might and Dadzawa. I especially love how much we see that Aizawa cares, since his introduction was "I expelled an entire class because they weren't up to my standards", and now gives house arrest and chores to students who literally went behind his back and brawled.

I think what most popular reason why people don't like about Bakugo (apart from the whole being an asshole/bully) is that he just assumed for like 15 years that Deku was always looking down on him. That the reason why he kept chasing after him despite being timid, weak and quirkless was because deep down he looked down on Bakugo. I guess it's reasonable when you think about the fact that these characters still kids, but at the same time Bakugo is pretty damn smart and plenty other kids have demonstrated a level of emotional intelligence that Bakugo completely lacked. So I guess that's what most people don't like about him. I mean, I'd argue that the whole point was for the audience to see Bakugo grow and learn: he began from a point of emotional immaturity and has now reached an understanding with Deku, a kid he hated for years. But maybe some people just don't like that stuff.

Wow. Wow wow wow. Your reaction and commentary on this specific, super-important episode is THE BEST on KZbin. Hands down. Your entire commentary and analysis encapsulated everything about Bakugo that it took me a little bit longer to accept about him. On my end, it took me until “MHA: Heroes Rising” to even begin to accept that there was more to Bakugo than being a “bully.” My thought process was “If Deku really still thought badly about Bakugo and how he treated him, there would be no way in Hades that he would have considered [doing what he did, in case some readers haven’t seen the movie by now]. So, what does Deku see in Bakugo that I’m not seeing yet?” Your commentary and analysis helped me fill in some things that I sort-of already “got” at a subconscious level about that episode and their relationship turning point, but really didn’t say out loud until now. You basically pointed out that Deku DID get his chance to directly confront Bakugo about how he felt when he was bullied by him, and told him to his face “You’re an asshole!” But he followed up with “ . . . but I felt like you were more than that, so that’s why I stayed chasing you. I knew you were destined for better things, and I wanted to see you grow.” I constantly see other posters complaining about Deku favoring Bakugo to the point of worship (they use a more crude phrase, though - people are gross!) and not “confronting” him for his past behavior. Basically expecting Deku to be a proxy for confronting their (alleged/possible) own past bullies. Or they say that Bakugo totally got no consequences for his past bullying. Neither observation is true. IMO, Bakugo got confronted by his own conscience (eventually) and reflected on his own actions, deciding on his own to start changing. And Deku eventually found it within himself to be more assertive in certain situations. And both of them grew within themselves to become true rivals. I’ll stop here because this is already long, but I just wanted to give you kudos for the most clear and thorough analysis and commentary on this wonderful, pivotal episode in particular, and of Bakugo as a character. Bravo! ❤️✊🏾

Like many people in the comments this was one of my favorite episodes in MHA and Alicia the way you explained Bakugo’s mental state was something I agreed with except with one part of his trauma, I don’t think the villains played that big a part of Bakugo’s trauma by being captured, I mean this guy was beating up villains immediately after being separated from the rest at USJ, did not back down during the training camp, heck even when he was in the bar with Shigaraki and his crew Bakugo wasn’t panicking he was ready to fight, all they did was make him believe he has the reason All Might retired, Also I think another reason why Bakugo challenged Izuku was to see what he was lacking not just if his path was wrong, like All Might said you need both the strong drive to win and the heart to save everyone to be a great hero PS: if their is a contradiction in what a said please point it out so can better explain what I want to say if possible
@pj_spirit Жыл бұрын
Bakugo fully admits to how he feels about their dynamic and it’s really screwed up that he’s misconstrued it so much. He sees anyone in need of help as weak and anyone who helps them as superior so that paints Deku’s helpful nature as Deku looking down on him. Nothing angers him more than that, as we see with them as kids at that creek when Deku tries to help him up from falling. If that has had him boiling with anger all the way to this point, think about how Bakugo must have seen Deku, beaten to hell and back, arms broken and worthless, exhausted and still trying to save him at the camp. According to Bakugo’s flawed logic, in that moment, he’d see Deku as still believing that Bakugo is weaker and inferior than Deku in that basically helpless state. Bakugo could do nothing but deny Deku’s help in that moment because being inferior to Deku in general, let alone in that state is something that Bakugo hated deeply

Bakugo’s VA gives a stellar performance here which truly encompasses the emotions present both on the surface and deep down. The voice cracking is super painful when considering the context here and the physical confrontation serves as a brilliant medium for Bakugo to express his feelings which best encompasses his character. I’m so happy that you were able to convey this in a clear and easy to follow manner, since most people tend to overlook this aspect and write characters off by their surface level archetypes. You’re probably recovering from the emotional flux of this episode when I’m typing this but if you’re reading this, I love you and your content. Keep up with the awesome content :D

Before Bakugo got his quirk he and Midoriya were evenly matched even down to the trading cards. The only difference was an emphasis on winning vs an emphasis on saving. But when he got his quirk and deku was still sticking to him, Bakugo must’ve felt as if he was deficient. After all, if they were even before, and he got a flashy new quirk, he ought to be better. @@hexeclipse9821 I'm one who believes Mineta still wouldn't be liked even if he's attractive. Didn't find Bakugo attractive either until I started liking him. But Bakugo being strong, hardworking, smart and useful while displaying great perseverance through sheer willpower is part of why he was already my favorite before S3 -other than the fact that most of his scenes are comic relief where he constantly takes the L (especially funny when he technically wins but the story always somehow turns it into giant L for him). If Mineta was actually showed moments of his high-intelligence that he's supposed to have in canon (just like S1-2 Bakugo still had tons of moments showing that he's surprisingly a smart thinker instead of the stereotypical blockhead bully), then I'd definitely would dislike him less initially (now I don't dislike him). Heck, even just showing him working hard or having the "never give up" spirit would make him feel more admirable for me. Bakugo is basically given a bunch of Mary Sue-ish positive traits to offset his shit personality, but Mineta gets a bunch of negative traits that overshadow that good part of him.

It's really an amazing episode. And at 8:58 Bakugo isn't just talking about the guilt he feels, he's talking about the crushing weight of figuring out Deku and All Might's secret, the complexities it adds to the equzation "Okay, yes, I was worried about being the one who ended all might. I was also worried about other people thinking that, but I'm strong enough to handle their criticism.... I also know deep down that All Might was proud to have rescued me, that it was his choice, not my fault... but it still hurts to juggle all of these things Yes, you and I, we're both smart enough to know all that. But... I know the truth. I know that he was doomed because he had already given up his quirk to you. I know neither of you want to talk about it. I'm the only one dealing with this burden I figured out that he is connected with the villain. I can't be certain precisely how, but my mind is coming up with these theories that I don't like... and I can't talk with anyone about it because it would shatter the foundations of our society - the belief in the symbol of peace - but I can't talk with you or All Might about it because you won't acknowledge the secret. I knew immediately after getting into UA that some people were above me in reputation... Todoroki and Momo... and found out quickly that there were some people above me in skill, like Todoroki. I knew I had to improve. I wasn't caught off guard. And yet, I find myself now at the bottom of the class. Everyone else has their provisional license. The perverted diaper midget is ahead of me. Uraraka, who I was watching out for as a potential threat all this time, surpassed me. Even Deku is above me. And I'm not quite sure I understand why. And just why did All Might pick you? What do you all have that I'm lacking? And what about you, in particular, Deku? Don't leave me in the dark any longer. I need to take this step."

Like just tolerate everything and be like "There there, youve made my life so difficult in the past up to this point even tho ive done nothing against you and you are still trying to beat me up, but i so sympsthize with your feelings." I would dare to say if someone is purposefully tormenting other people, theyre not entitled to have others accept them and their emotions, if the continue their terrible behaviour. As great as this episode is, it's also the episode that best exemplifies a frustration I have with Deku's Full Cowling. It is depicted as being SO much weaker than what we are lead to believe it should be. For example, in this fight against Bakugo, Deku is using "8%" of One For All's power all over his body. With the implication that "100%" is what Deku was using before he learned full cowling (i.e. when he destroyed a sky-scraper sized robot in a single punch, punched the air so hard it put massive holes in at least 3 floors of a concrete building, or flicked the air so hard it shattered pillars of ice and blasted freezing air across an Olympic sized stadium), and that his 100% would be stronger now than back then, I expect Deku to be more than just kind of faster and stronger than a normal, athletic guy. I see Deku punch Bakugo in the face with 8% of the physical might needed to LEVEL A BUILDING WITH AIR and I know, for a fact, that Bakugo is dead now, but the show has the gall to pretend otherwise. The following is a list of things that do not happen to Bakugo as a result of being hit in the face by a punch that is, and I can't stress this enough, 8% of a punch with force equivalent to that of a small tactical nuke. Bakugo is not: reduced to a colour on Deku's fist killed instantly, leaving an unrecognizable corpse kept on life support for the remainder of his short, short life given brain damage that will keep him from ever being a productive member of society again knocked unconscious at all hurt so bad that he chooses to stop the fight given any kind of physical scars at all even made to slow down or pause in response No, Bakugo is so unfazed that he recovers from taking that punch to the jaw (the part that boxers call "the button" because people get KO'ed so easily when hit there) faster than Deku can recover from throwing a punch. The moment in which Bakugo takes 5 freight trains to the off switch is the same moment that Bakugo wins the fight. I get that Bakugo has to win for the story and character moment, but if he's going to win, they shouldn't depict his absolute, unequivocal loss. I don't care that they hid that with a dust cloud and put him in a victory pose afterward, I just saw him take a hit that WILL put him down. Alright, rant over.

The emotional growth and this is the one that really shows you Bakugo is more than just an angy bean who bullies everyone (the hints have been there but this puts all his cards on the table in full display). The "redemption" of characters to me is one of the strongest things this anime has IMO, from the start I figured I'd like Bakugo cause he felt like a Vegeta char a dick at the start but a real one in the end... I never thought I'd feel for him and be crying for his mental state being so real after everything he went through!

Bakugo well and truly did not understand Deku to this point. If he did, he wouldn’t have any hatred for Deku. All of his treatment of Deku is founded upon a fundamentally incorrect perception that Deku’s helpfulness and drive to improve was Deku wholeheartedly believing himself to be superior to Bakugo and looking down on him their entire lives. Bakugo couldn’t know the first thing about Deku until he realizes he’s been wrong about that the whole time

Interesting bit of comparison between the sub and the dub: at one point during the fight the sub has Bakugo thinking "don't make me think". I took that to be an internal admonishment towards Midoria to stop trying to figure things out and just fight. The dub, by contrast, renders that line as "can't let him think". Which I take to be Bakugo, in a sense, recognizing that Midoria's greatest strength is his ability to analyze.

No Alicia, being a bully isn't a characteristic. A characteristic is their hate and anger and resentment. Bullying is an action resulted from a pure lack of self control and empowered by a sense of entitlement. The person doing the bullying is fully responsible for those actions and just because they feel bad about their lives doesn't justify making other people's lives miserable. What they should do is apologize and find other ways to handle their feelings, like finding a hobby or maybe actually become a friend with someone that's interested instead of beating'em up.

People that hate on Bakugo just don't understand him. I have mental health issues and while I'm on the Deku end of the spectrum in terms of personality Bakugo has a lot of issues with his mental health even before the kidnapping, and that shit doesn't exactly go away overnight. He's always been told that he's amazing and that's led to him literally putting himself under pressure because that's what everyone expects from him. To a fault. While it's not the same, it's like my autism and masking. I do certain things that are 'expected' by neurotypicals in social interactions. These do not come naturally to me so it requires extra effort just to meet the 'expected standards' and I cannot express how frustrated and angry I can get at myself when I land up in situations where I feel I've failed. Some might say it's silly to identify so well to fictional characters but there's just things there that really do affect people irl. The kicker is when people say they still hate him because he has no character development. Like bitch please. This was the wall coming down, but it's slowly been chipped away the entire time. You just took him at face value.

Really don’t know how she’ll make it through the later seasons but I believe in the cause 👍🏿

Am 300% against most of what alicias sentiment is with bakugo. Yes you should acknowledge everything about one person, not just the bullying. But honestly he isn't just bullying, he is being an 24/7 a-hole to everyone with aggresive and downright antisocial behavior. Some of it in conjunction with the notion of being a higher being than others (he's stronger than most, looks down on deku the quirkless (kinda like a caricature of Geto in JJK tbh), etc.) This episode only gives me the positive feeling, that he hopefully learns from his -self induced- suffering. His pain is very much felt in these scenes, but is well deserved in my eyes. The fight choreography and the VA was badass tho.

Is it still called cinematography in animation? Especially that finally clash, flying in close to the streeth and around them. Fucking hype.
@aliciaxlife11 ай бұрын
Yup! How it works is within film or animation as long as there is a 3 dimensional movement within the piece it counts :) this applies to 2D animation when there is dynamic movement usually

I think you'd really like the MHA movies one of them specifically focuses on deku and bakugo and has one of the greatest moments i've seen in an anime movie

This episode completely made me do a 180 on Bakugou on my first My Hero watch. I hated him. I rolled my eyes every time he showed up. I shouted at the screen to tell him off for being so terrible. Then finally, we get to this moment and I went "oh my god I get him now." This is probably my favorite episode. Its so so so important.

This was a real good episode. Amazingly voice acted Bakugo both in the sub and dub.

Not conventional therapy, but Bakugo and Deku did work through some of their issues.... and a good chunk of road material.
@joshburns6116 Жыл бұрын
The only problem I have with this relationship with Bakugo and Deku is just the fact that this show never shows them being friends in anyway just him following him around and getting the shit beat out of him yet somehow he still wants to be friends and be close to him. That’s just one issue in my head but it is just anime so it is what it is🤷🏿♂️

ive kinned bakugo for years and ive always gotten backlash about it, but this summarizes why i kin him so much, bc he struggles so much with his insecurities and anxieties that he feels like he himself is the problem, and skewing his own world view because of that, and because not a lot of people look past at who he really is. That's also why i think him and kiri get along so well, bc kiri may seem dumb but he sees the person bakugo actually is. stay smart alicia, and thanks for helping me find the reasons why i kin bakugo sm

In english dub what Bakugou said sounds so much more crushing like seriously

so both the dubs of this episode have amazing voice work, both actors do a great job. This is def where everyone started liking Bakugo, if not more, cause we finally get everything laid out infront of us.

This was the episode that really got me on board with Bakugo. It's also the first time I found the Dub to be inferior, Bakugo's english VA is usually perfect but his breakdown performance felt lacking.

Bakugo it's a good character. That's a fact and it's sad that after this he was pulled out of the main focus because of the reaction of the readers and watchers

bakugo's va absolutely COOOKEED!!!
@RaggedLands Жыл бұрын
The point of the "When you used it with a punch, it made me mad" was that Bakugo knows that Deku shouldn't be using his hands or he might lose them. He's mad that Deku would risk his hands.

17:10 this is why i like the dub more for so many shows like one piece and mha.... in the dub he says "ALL MIGHT WAS MY HERO BUT YOU WERE THE ONE ACTUALLY IN MY LIFE!!!" I dont feel like i need to elaborate why the dub was so much better there for a native english speaker and mind you thats not me saying the sub is bad but that the sub does too direct of translations that misses how good of a delivery of a line it can be and people bitch about the english VA's being bad or too repetive makes me convinced those idiots havent even listened to any dubs aside from ones on big shows from toei and ignores the fact that the issue of repeated use of VAs exists in the subs too but also like in the dubs and subs both, its fixed by the fact that the VA's ARE all good so it doesnt even matter... like i kinda dropped off watching your channel and making my comments for our god, al gor of the rythms and all and who knows this might be the last vid i watch cause of how i feel for a native english speaker the sub is just such a lesser experience but still i at least wanna say it one last time before fading into the void again that you REALLY need to watch some of these shows you react to in the dub and at least give it a shot for each and every show ya watch to see if you'll like it more and push past the idiotic hatred of dubs the anime community has fostered to the point at least that you AT LEAST can acknowledge the good parts of the dubs like the fact that the VA's most commonly heard are by and large actually really good just like the japanese and acknowledge the fact that barring the occasional crazy extreme left leaning translators trying to instert entirely different shows into it all, the translation is about as close as you can get it while making it acutally make sense in the translated language since nothing translates 1:1 in most every language out there and so sticking to janky poor translations in the sub that ARE DIRECT at the cost of making sense and at least delivering the same feeling is something to consider.

I didn’t see her reactions to love is war, but the general consensus I got was that she absolutely hated iino. What’s interesting is that with characters that I’d say are more justifiably hated like bakugo and even endeavor (an actual abuser) she just finds more appealing to watch. She must have really been rubbed the wrong way
@CrownofMischief Жыл бұрын
From what she said after, it was less Iino herself and more her ideals. Like, she doesn't hate Iino as a character, but a lot of her opposition to her in that episode was the fact that she didn't agree with what she was preaching as a presidential candidate. Unfortunately, it came off as a little petty in the reaction, with Alicia wanting Iino to spiral instead of having Shirogane save her
