Keeping it monochrome was probably one of the best choices they could've possibly made for this adaptation. Not because it necessarily makes it creepier - although it does - but because they learned from the last attempts at adapting Junji Ito's work. Toss color in and you water down what makes his artwork so good and so unsettling, which is the insanely intricate and detailed linework. Take color out of the equation like with the source material, though, and that adds so much more character to it since that's the only way you can really add highlights to certain details.

The animation strategy here was a wild bet: this is acted with mocap, then render on 3D and animated over it. That normally would be such a huge waste of time and resources, but we can see that it paid off SO much, it has that uncanny fluidity that makes it feel alive
@thesevendeadlysins578Ай бұрын

@seanrussell6594Ай бұрын
4:56 the reason why you may feel that way is because the studio mocapped everything, did it in 3D and redrew it completely in 2D. It took them 5 years to do this

As a massive Junji Ito fan, I can safely say that you really don't need to bother with the other adaptions of his work, they really, truly fail to capture the essence of what makes his stuff so unsettling and enjoyable. You should absolutely read some if this show gets its hooks into you. Tomie and Sensor are both really cool and his Frankenstein adaptation is phenomenal. One thing I will say about this adaptation though, the pacing is WILD. This episode alone covers about 3 chapters of the manga, which is a shame because it means that there's way less time dedicated to the Azami storyline(notably, there's a moment in that chapter where Kirie actually pulls Azami to the side to go "look, Shuichi's my man, you need to step off," and this is after Azami has repeatedly gone to Shuichi's house screaming at his door for him, shit's wild, it's great). I've heard that the other episodes are going to be longer, which is great, because there is a lot of stuff to cover and I don't think this is going to be a 10 episode season, so they're gonna need all the time they can get if they're gonna adapt EVERYTHING. Also, I think all the Junji Ito fans can all agree, Tomie's presence would absolutely sort out all this spiral business.
@anitaremenarova6662Ай бұрын
Enigma of Amigara fault is my favorite and due to how short it is I recommend it to anyone new to Ito as well. Also yeah, given how long just this episode took it might be a while.
@GrimmBonesАй бұрын
Honestly, I read almost all of his works, and I gotta say, I'm genuinely not a big fan of Tomie. I liked the first story. But the further they went, the more I felt like it went too long. And as much as I love Junji Ito, he sure can blueball with some of his works. The "Town With No Streets", which is one of my favs, also just feels like it's missing an entire epilogue, and is riddled with unanswered questions, but also just unfinished story beats. (and despite all that, it's still one of my favs, along with "Long Dream" one, which has an awesome idea.

It tracks. Both Comedy and Horror hinge on build up and release, and subverting expectations to provoke a spontaneous reaction. Even Uzamaki had me burst out laughing more than once when I read it, and not just in a "That's hilariously Fucked-Up" way, either. When people are zipping around as little mini-tornadoes, ya gotta admit, some of this stuff is just straight up goofy. I Think that's part of the charm, its all ...unsettling, and its not like western "Camp" horror, exactly, but its not taking itself 100% seriously either. It's like Ito's committed to following a weird idea through to its logical conclusion, whether that ends up somewhere deeply uncomfortable or just kinda silly. There's a dream logic to his stuff, and like dreams, its often pretty ridiculous when you think about it in the morning, but when you're in the middle of it, its REAL SHIT.

This show was in the works for YEARS, and I'm still amazed it actually came out. After some previously disappointing adaptations of Junji Ito's work into animation (and if you've read the manga that he's published, you can see why it was such a challenge) they wanted to make extra-super-sure that this one in particular worked. Uzumaki is arguably the number 1 all-time work of horror manga, and if they screwed this up, heads would have rolled.
@KumoKumikoАй бұрын
hopes are so high for this adaptation. as someone for whom the manga lives rent-free in my brain, they lived up to the hopes, it's incredibly faithful not only to Junji Ito's masterful art, and his signature page-turn reveals, but also to the v i b e s this story is about obsessive paranoia, patterns that draw your attention and trap you, unable to look away. it borrows a lot from cosmic horror and standard horror staples, but expresses it in a way that makes it uniquely horrifying.

Junji Ito's art is horror. But it isn't really scary, per say. It's..... haunting. His art and stories have a way of sticking in your head for a week or two. He is my favorite mangaka for those reasons really. And I'm just happy that he's getting a faithful adaptation. And if we only get that 1 good adaptation, I'm glad it's his magnum opus. And, yes, a lot of this is 1-1 with some manga panels.
@kenjutsukata1o1Ай бұрын
I was about to disagree about them not being scary, but after reading your full comment I think I agree. Most of his works haven't 'scared' me in the moment. Some of them even made me chuckle (the balloon one comes to mind). But then I would find myself lying wide-awake in bed the night after reading with a creeping sense of dread as I thought about the story. And as you said, it usually stuck in my head for a week or two. The balloon story, while absurd on (literal) paper, is really freaky the more you think about it. I don't know what his secret is, but Ito-sensei's ability to take seemingly silly premises and have them fill you with potent, underlying dread is masterclass. I still haven't read all of his works because I have to be mentally prepared for a couple of weeks of that dread that are guaranteed to follow.
