A quick overview of the new Alico boots that I picked up. I hope to get these broken in by the start of the spring season.
Handmade in Italy of Perwanger leather, Alico's New Guide hiking boots are built for years of use in rigorous alpine terrain. The durable speed lacing system ensures a supportive fit, and the leather-lined interior is breathable and nearly friction free.

I have been using the Alico Summits for continual hiking and mountaineering in the Andes for some 15 years. I purchased them via Sierra Trading Post. They fit true to my standard American foot size (U.S. 12-D). I immediately replaced the factory insoles with a pair of Superfeet. Beyond replacing the laces and regular conditioning (mink oil) and weatherproofing (beeswax), they never have been serviced, and look great. I have not experienced hotspots, nor has water found my feet. The Vibram outsoles work well in my conditions -- bunch grass, scree and massif rock -- and are predictable, so I am a fan. Personally, I find the heavier, stiffer leather mountaineering boots too inflexible for the demands of the steep volcanoes of the northern Andes, so the lighter Summits are a nice compromise. These are my go-to boot when not on a glacier, when I shift to plastic boots (Koflachs) that provide better stiffness for crampons as well as warmth for the extreme conditions at high altitude. I figured it was time to share my experience with this fantastic boots.

Great to know they will last. How many times did you replace their vibram soles / with what and cost? I got Summits from Sierra about 1.5 years back but have not used them yet. Sierra does not sell them anymore of they are out of stock now. I had also gotten Tahoes but returned them since I already have excess shoes.

@@faautobahna9416 I replaced the Vibram souls recently -- after some 15 years of steady use on the trails and volcanos that surround our property. I purchased the same Vibram Montagna (# 132) souls from Amazon for about $35 and paid $15 to the cobbler in our village to have them sewn into the boots. I also renewed the Superfeet insoles and laces. The boots are as good as new. I don't hike and climb as much as previously. I'm guessing these Alico Summits will outlive me.

Perwanger is the name of the family that invented the particular leather conditioning process that is used to make these boots. I've had a pair of these for about a year. I'm 63 years old and use them to walk my dogs in the woods all the time. I have a 10.5 EE foot and they fit great. Just use them and they break in fine. They are heavy which is not a negative in my book. They are not simple hiking boots. They are mountaineering boots and are terrific on rocks, roots and unstable ground. Your feet will stay dry if you condition them properly every six months or so (as with any other boot) I also have a pair of the Alico Summit hikers which are good boots but these are my "go to" boots in the aforementioned tougher conditions. Just suck it up, break them in and enjoy them!

The inside of my Alico Guide boots started tearing in the rear within one year of almost daily use. My Treemme 137 boots have a lower shaft height and weigh more than the Alico Guides. My Treemme 137 boots are the same exact height as the old Raichle Ravines but use 3.3-3.9 mm thick Gallusser leather.

If they're only 2 pounds each, that's a nice weight. My old Thom McAns, vintage 1975 and also made in Italy, weight 2.5 pounds EACH. They're a workout for sure. They still fit me after all these years and I'm using them as training boots - prepping for the Appalachian Trail next year.

Beautiful boots. I like that they chose not to use a GORE-TEX liner. I've never cared for them.

Granted, this was a long time back but when I bike couriered my Dad got me some Gore Tex pants as it rains here often and I couldn't use them. May as well have rubber pants. Perhaps fine for a casual walk but any activity overwhelmed their ability to breath and I got soaked in sweat rather than water. Knowing how much feet sweat, I find it hard to believe that even todaus Gore Tex could possibly breath anywhere near what is required to stay dry. To be fair though I would assume the same with any heavily treated leather but at least the lack of a liner should allow for faster drying.

I got a pair of the "Alico Summit" boots. Basically the same boot, only in Redwood color, and the leather will flex a little better. I saw a pair of those mountaineering boots that got returned to our local STP store. Those things are super heavy duty. If you love hiking, and want a pair of bomb proof hikers that you can withstand having on your feet all day, the Mountaineers seem a bit much, unless you are actually "Mountaineering" in the Alps. lol. The Summits seem a little better for the average to serious hiker/camper. To make the Summits the best boot ever, toss the factory insole, and install a red Spenco Walker/Runner insole. You can literally walk/stand in them all day, and still have a bomb proof boot to protect from the elements.

I saw the Guide at our Sierra too about two years ago at the amazing price of $80 or so but they were too heavy. They are meant for actual mountaineering, which I am never doing. Any new observations on your Summits in the past four years ? Have Summits but not tried them yet.
@Condor1970

@@faautobahna9416... Even though they are less beefy than the Mountaineering boots, the Summits still take eons to really break in. I recommend Obenauf's boot grease or similar, for softening and waterproofing. I also switched from the Spenco insoles, to the Copper Fit memory foam work boot insoles. They're a little more comfy, if on your feet all day. I also swapped out the laces to thicker high quality Kevlar laces.

Have a pair of these that I purchased a couple of months ago. Use them for walking three "real dog" Golden Retriever boys in woods, water, rocky terrain three or four times a day. Have EE feet so I bought the W version. They are a bit stiff but that is just the nature of the boot construction. I was a bit concerned about weight and stiffness but I managed to break them in quickly and neither of these are a concern at this point.Definitely can vouch for the Norwegian Welting as far as keeping water out I have a pair of the Alico Summit boots as well which are definitely a different feel than these. I'll reach for either pair without thinking much about it when we are headed out although the New Guides have a slight edge for me. Money very well spent and, although at my age I may not be around long enough to need them re-soled it's good to know that they can be for whoever inherits them after I drop dead. Very happy with Alico boots!

Beautiful boots, very rugged! By the way, they pronounce Aliko, C in Italian, is the same as in French, so it is K except if it was a Ç which would sound like an S, and no, i am not Italian, i just have so many friends who are, i understand it perfectly, and speak a little bit. Have a good one!

Yes, at first, these appear to be good boots. I find the inner tongue to be too much, too bulky, and cut it, out, with good result. However, if one uses these boots for the rugged purpose they are intended, that is getting wet, even though they are correctly dried out, the stitching on the welt will soon rot, way before the tread is worn, and the sole will start to separate, starting in the middle , where the sole flexes most. Quite incredibly, in this day and age, the thread material used is not synthetic and it will rot. You can get them resewn with a nylon/polyester blend. Likewise the thread used to stitch the uppers and specially the heel, cannot be much thicker than that used to sew a pair of trousers, and this too will let you down. What a shame, all that beautiful leather and craftmanship wasted

Are these the only all leather mountaineering boots that can be bought new? These boots are like hipster´s ultimate dream boots if not for the price. I own several alpine mountaineering all leather boots but most of them I picked up secondhand and were made at least 30 odd years back. I have no idea they still make new all leather hiking boots. I guess these are kind of the like the brooks saddle for bicycles, lots of style but not really high in performance compared to mountaineering boots with more "advanced" materials. However, in the durability department, these will probably last a long time

The Alico New Guide are cool, but I think the Gronell Stelvio look better. The insole on the Alico New Guide is cheap, and flimsy. The Gronell Stelvio has a better leather insole, and the boot is all leather. The eyelet on the New Guide Boots are too small for thicker shoe strings, which is why I prefer the Gronell Stelvio which as the D-ring looped eyelets.
