Alien (1979) Movie Reaction | First Time Watching
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hey guys! Today we are watching Alien from 1979 for the first time! I absolutely loved this one. What a wild ride! PLUS, there's a cat called Jones!!
#alien #alienmovie #moviereaction
In the distant future, the crew of the commercial spaceship Nostromo are on their way home when they pick up a distress call from a distant moon. The crew are under obligation to investigate and the spaceship descends on the moon afterwards. After a rough landing, three crew members leave the spaceship to explore the area on the moon. At the same time as they discover a hive colony of some unknown creature, the ship's computer deciphers the message to be a warning, not a distress call. When one of the eggs is disturbed, the crew realizes that they are not alone on the spaceship and they must deal with the consequences
Thank you so much for watching! I hope you enjoyed the video 💜

One thing I love about these older movies is that everything is practical and feels real. If this was made today, so much of it would be cgi and feel fake.

On old sailing ships there was no refrigeration and maybe weeks from land. So they did burial at sea before the body rotted with the body wrapped and weighted and then slid overboard to rest at the bottom. It became a tradition and still sometimes done by navies and preferred by some. The US Navy can now preserve bodies for burial on land. In space stories, they sometimes do burial in space in an analogous fashion.

In that scene, the one with the chest-burster making its appearance, I was lying on the couch with a blanket the first time I saw this movie. I threw the blanket over myself in shocked terror when that thing popped out. Crossover spoiler: Mel Brooks would do a great job in recreating that scene in one of his movies. The jettison of Kane's body was an extension of an old naval practice dating back centuries: Burial at sea. But in space, well... Another crossover spoiler: "Doctor Who" eventually makes a reference to "Alien." I will not say when. Don't worry, I too was cheering for Jones to live. I love cats, too.
@philipped.r.6385
@philipped.r.6385 8 ай бұрын
When they eject Kane's body in space, it's inspired from the real life burial at sea from navies around the world. When a shipmate dies at sea and there is no way to get the body to the land for normal burial and no way to conserve the body until they can do it at a later time, it's allowed to bury the shipmate at sea. It's not seen as dishonorable at all and it was done a lot historically especially in times of war. They will have a ceremony with full honors on the ship and then solemny drop the coffin into the sea. You do see this sometimes in science fiction movies and video games.

@@julesreacts If that was a dvd, then yes maybe, but if it’s a new version for streaming, than no. It’s probably been reremastered for streaming since I worked on it 20 years ago. But back in the day, getting HD versions of old films was a new and wild amazing possibility and I was young and full of knowledge (thanks to film school in Bris) that the senior Hollywood technicians didn’t have at the time, and I ended up teaching them standards for using HD, before it was a thing. Nowadays I know nothing.

As a fellow child of 1980, I've always thought of this film as a kind of anchor point in history of my beginning, in relation to the present. The "Who" you were asking about that 'arranged' this detour for them is "The Company", Weyland-Yutani. They call it The company, because it essentially is the Only company in this future. Own everything, supply everything, and employ everyone (including the crew of this ship). The government is basically a subsidiary of Weyland. It is a disturbingly accurate vision of how things are going, and are likely to go. You definitely want to see the sequel, where Ripley fully embraces her conflict with these creatures.

When i was a kid, my mom had a pirated VHS of this movie. I saw it when she was at work and it terrified me, esp of a company that will throw you under the bus to "benefit the shareholder". You seem too calm watching this, try watching it at night on a projector in surround sound.

Regarding everybody not listening to Ripley. They had no reason to listen to her. The biggest problem we as a movie audience has with stuff like this is it's quickly obvious that Ripley is the main character so we trust her, she must be right. But people in that situation wouldn't know she's a main character; they would be real people Dallas was the captain. He had no reason to do anything she says. At best, he might consider her comments as advice when making decisions and giving orders. Kane was the executive officer. He had the same reason to ignore Ripley as Dallas did. Ash, well, he was Ash and had his own reasons, but also, they made it clear that regarding science stuff, even Captain Dallas couldn't give him orders. Nor could Ripley. Ripley is a warrant officer, meaning, she is an officer but she's the lowest ranking one. Brett, Parker, and Lambert are not officers. They have to take orders from Ripley when Dallas and Kane aren't around. After Dallas died, they did start listening. They argued, but then they agreed. So, really, except for Ash opening the door for his own reasons, everybody in this show who should have listened to Ripley and followed her directives actually did exactly that, as soon as they were required to. Now we the audience get irritated that nobody is listening to the obvious main character, but in perspective of who those characters should be, I think they listened to her exactly the amount they should have. And that's one more reason this movie is so awesome: the writers did a great job of making 7 diverse characters all behave rationally. Most of them. Lambert was awfully panicky, but given what she's going through, that's understandable too.

The emergency detonation was a physical thing, the computer couldn't control it outside of stopping the rods from being removed. The power system seems to be a nuclear reactor, the self destruct is accieved by pulling the cooling rods out. after 5 minutes the reaction can't be stopped which is why it didn't work when she put the rods back in a few seconds late

After watching this movie the first time I'd always assumed the cat had been impregnated by the Alien. The cat was there to show you an alien predatory being that you are familiar with. It was a bit of a proxy to help the viewer see and understand the Alien. Yes Ripley being ignored at the start was a lot like Clarice Starling's FBI character in the 1991 Silence of the Lambs. The Jodie Foster character is ignored or diminished by her FBI coworkers. Very similar for Ripley here.

Yeah, I'll add my vote for definitely watching "Aliens". More action/adventure than horror and really great. So, you seemed curious about how there was no blood after Dallas was attacked in the air ducts. If you watch the uncut version (and you should watch the uncut version of the sequel, if you can), there's a scene that was cut out of the original theatrical release where Ripley, as she is trying to get to the shuttle during the countdown, finds Dallas alive, but wrapped up in a cocoon that the Alien was keeping him in, supposedly to then use his body to lay more eggs inside him. Ripley has to kill Dallas but they left it out of the film because it bogged down the suspense of the countdown. Great reaction. It would have been fun to have a "Cat Counter" on screen to keep up with how many times you said 'cat' during the reaction!

Thing is, there never should have been a debate over letting Cain in. Ripley was the Officer In Command at the time she made the call to follow quarantine protocol. Ash then later lecturing her on you do your job and let me do mine is the one majorly frustrating line in the movie since he disobeyed the OIC's order to follow proper procedure and wait 24 hours. I agree it must be a hard decision to make, but Ripley made the right call, Ash overrode her authority. LOL, fling them out the window! That was a serious laugh out loud moment for me during this watch, people in the brake room were looking at me like I was nuts laughing out of no where like that. Still fling them out the window is a proper description of what they did to ole Cain, that was a straight up "YEET!" Damn, now all i want is to see Jonesy in a cat space suit. 😻

There are some naval traditions represented in this movie. First - the ship's cat. Originally used to root out any rats or mice that could get onto the ship ... but in this case, used as a calming focus on a crew that might not like each other, but must spend months together with no chance of escape. Second - burial at sea. It was very common for any dead crew members to be given a funeral on deck, and then have their body committed to the deep. In this version, the funeral is very basic. "Anyone want to say anything?" ... [presses airlock button] Third - attending a distress signal. When somebody calls for help at sea, you MUST attend if you are the only possible source of rescue. It's the naval code. In deep space - this must be automatic as the odds of ANYBODY else being close by to assist are effectively zero

There's never been a burial ceremony in space, of course, but what they did with Kane's body mimics a burial at sea. If someone dies on a ship and it is impractical to bring the body home, the body is wrapped and, with ceremony, dropped into the sea. Dumping Kane's wrapped body into space is like that.

Alien, one of the best. Glad you enjoyed it, Juliette. I saw this in the cinema at the time. There was massive hype at the time which was totally justified. Now you can play Alien:Isolation hehe. One of the scariest games I've played. Think of how scary Until Dawn is and double it and you're getting close. Possibly not for you as you don't usually like horror games but it recreates the mood and atmosphere of Alien perfectly. It's set between Alien and the second movie.

People will sometimes say this movie changed my life. Well this one did. I was 13 in 1979 and a massive fan of all things Sci-Fi. But I didn't know much Horror, cause I had super overprotective parents and was an only child. Well one bright Saturday afternoon my best friend's mom took me, him and his sister (We had a bit of a mutual crush, I didn't know she liked me yet) to see this. It was the first R-Rated film I ever saw in theater. And what an experience. During the scene where the Xenomorph births from Kane people retched, screamed, ran out. Valerie ended up in my lap. She spent most of the rest of the film with her face in my neck, she cried until my collar got damp. The duality of the experience was stunning for me cause images of absolute horror I could never have imagined were being burned into my brain, while I was simultaneously very aroused have a member of the opposite sex I felt attracted to that close to me for the first time in my life. It's a day I've never forgotten. And my parents weren't best pleased by the screaming nightmares I had for weeks afterwards.

This video was a pleasant surprise, and of course I had to watch it before going to bed. You did very well, although it's a horror movie. I had a feeling that this movie wouldn't be too bad for you, because I think it's more suspenseful than scary. I think horror games get to you much more than movies, because they are more immersive and you are more involved in what's happening. Now of course you have to watch the sequel "Aliens", it's even better than "Alien" in my opinion. Both "Alien" and "Aliens" are among my most favourite scifi-horror movies. I knew you would like the cat Jones. The most important thing obviously was that the cat survived 😺

When I was a kid, Ridley Scott was my director. He did three perfect films in a row -- Alien, Blade Runner, and Legend. Except Legend was not *exactly* perfect. I saw that last one twice in the theater and was the only one there. But his thing was atmosphere and style. For the alien ship in the first movie (and the alien design) he got artist H.R. Giger. The same artist who did the album cover for Emerson, Lake and Palmer's best album, as well as the insert for a Dead Kennedys album that ended up getting them brought up on obscenity charges. It's weird that Ridley Scott is no longer thought of as the director of those three films. He's known more for things like Gladiator or Thelma and Louise.

@Lethgar_Smith

Artist HR Geiger created the design used for the Alien derelict ship as a kind of musical instrument originally. Think of it as an alien flute. Ridley Scott saw the painting and chose the uniquely beautiful design for the alien spaceship. Caine's "burial" is a space version of a burial at sea. Traditionally when someone died onboard a ship at sea, their body was disposed of by dropping it overboard following an appropriate and respectful ceremony. There was no way to preserve a body in the days of sailing ships and a corpse begins to stink pretty quickly. So it became a maritime tradition and today is most often carried out by request where you can arrange to have your funeral and burial at sea on board a charter vessel. Th U.S. Navy last performed actual burial at sea for someone who died unexpectedly on board, was during WWII.

Jules : A reminder to all of you who have seen this in home video systems. You cannot imagine how effective this film is in a theatre, with good sound. The film design in the critical scenes makes one physically weary, and back them we had no idea what were in for. Hard to replicate that experience. So those of you saw this in the original theatrical release; count your self lucky to have been part of a unique experience not to be replicated easily.

Classic sci-fi horror. The tension is so thick, you will need a sharp steak knife in order to cut it. The voice of "Mother" is so iconic, in my honest opinion. There's something unnerving about a cold feminine voice counting down to your death. It wasn't until GLaDOS that we rediscovered that a computerized female voice can be absolutely creepy. Fun Fact: In H.R. Giger's original illustrations that inspired the look of the Alien, the creature had eyes. For the movie, Giger insisted that the creature have no eyes, thus giving the bleak appearance of a cold and emotionless beast that hunts by smell. Real Guts Fact: The dead facehugger that Ash autopsies was made using fresh shellfish, four oysters, and a sheep kidney to re-create the internal organs. Filming had to be done quickly because the organic material would go bad very fast under the studio lights. Bloody Solution Fact: It was conceptual artist Ron Cobb who came up with the idea that the Alien should bleed acid. This came about when Dan O'Bannon ran into a wall with the screenplay in how to handle the last half of the movie. He needed a good reason for why the crew members don't just shoot the thing and kill it but still not make it an indestructible monster that can't be killed. The acid blood was the idea that solved this problem.

The Alien, the alien ship, ship interior and that skeleton known in the fandom as the "Space Jockey" were all designed by the famous Swedish artist H R Giger. His style of art was rather unique. His paintings were a mixture of organic and mechanical. That's why you noticed that the alien ship design looked like spines and ribs. The alien itself was ripped out of a series of artworks of his called "The Necromancer". It's almost impossible to see in the movie but the alien suit has a actual human skull in the front. If you want to see a good example of his artwork, look up the album cover for Emerson, Lake and Palmer's "Brains Salad Surgery". His artwork tends to lean on the dark and horrific side of things but also looks very beautiful at the same time. I call it "Beautiful Horror" myself.
