Number one thing is you have to watch the sequel, "Aliens." It's one of the best sequels of the time. The other thing about this movie is that it had the best marketing I've seen of a premiere. When the movie was first advertised, all they showed was the alien egg opening in the darkness. I don't remember seeing clips before the first week of showing so no one knew what to expect. That shows faith in your work. Also, when the thing burst from the guys stomach, all of those reactions were genuine. The cast didn't know what was going to happen, 👍, great stuff. 🖖😎👍

30:35, I've heard that in the original script Ripley didn't survive. The alien managed to evade her harpoon shot then flings itself back onto the lifeboat. It then punches through Ripley's helmet and ends her in a really gruesome fashion. In this final shot to show how it had evolved, the alien sends out the distress message in Captain Dallas's voice. But they decided nobody wanted such a bummer of an ending.

How can you not have seen Alien? It's a fantastic but incredibly derivative film that steals from here, there and everywhere but its power is in its presentation. Fox should be congratulated because after their executives flew back and forth to London for Star Wars they found themselves doing it again for Alien wondering if they should put in more money. It all worked out in the end but it was touch and go. It's a classic.
@angelavalentino51468 ай бұрын
The directors cut wasn’t necessary for this movie, but it is important for the sequel “Aliens”, otherwise you’ll have lots of questions. (Do not ever watch Alien 3). For the rest of Alien and Predator movies, just watch order of release, and it’ll make sense. At least Predator, Predator 2, and Predators. Then into Alien bs Predator.

I saw "Alien" in the same ex-Cinerama theater where I'd seen "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968), "Star Wars" (1977), and would see "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981). The print and TV ads said only: "In space, no one can hear you scream." The opening title sequence and Jerry Goldsmith's music raised the level of tension beyond belief. This tale of Company skulduggery and a naive freighter crew getting picked off one by one, accompanied by top notch Physical EFX is a Horror Classic. The Face Hugger and Xenomorph have grossed out/scared new viewers for over 40 years, unlike today's cheap looking DFX/CGI. Great reactions, I see you're as frozen in place like Lambert, at times.;)

The ship is so huge because it's a commercial vessel, meant to be hauling ore mined from planets, moons and/or asteroids. The drop ship is probably designed to be hauling industrial equipment to drill, hammer or blow up rocks to haul back to the main ship, Nostromo. Like Yaphet said, it's not designed for science or exploration.

First and foremost its a brilliant sci-fi with elements of horror. I think this film being tagged as a horror does it a dis-service in some ways. People found it scary, yes. That wasn't its main point though, it's really just a sci-fi and space/the unknown itself is scary. It's a totally different beast compared to something like The Thing which is a true sci-fi horror on both levels where the horror is the main theme and the sci-fi just facilitates that. Alien is just so well done and made that it's believable, keeping the tension high. I also kind of think first time watching while reacting ruins the real experience of a lot of films or not seeing them in a cinema/solo. Immersion is a key factor for a lot of good films.

The chains and water in that area of the Nostromo is the dry dock area of that commercial towing ship where they do repairs on things like the Suloco transporter they used to go down onto the planetoid with. You can't expect a large ship to fit into a small space so water condensation would accumulate and eventually drip off of the ceiling of that dry dock repair shop area he was inside of.

In 2002, Director Sir Ridley Scott and his brother Tony were among the executive producers of The Gathering Storm, a television biographical film of Winston Churchill in the years just prior to World War II. In 1984, Ridley Scott directed a big-budget ($900,000) television commercial, "1984", to launch Apple Computer's Macintosh computer. After graduation in 1963, he secured a job as a trainee set designer with the BBC. Filmed at Shepperton Studios in England, Alien was the sixth highest-grossing film of 1979, earning over $104 million worldwide. Wikipedia.

4:40, because of gravity and this planet may be bigger than Earth. A lot of popular science fiction like Star Trek and Star Wars tends to hand wave how much energy and fuel is needed to heave a lot of mass into orbit. Think about how big rockets are right now to reach escape velocity. Also they are bringing down the whole crew, life support, food, supplies that takes a lot of room which means more mass and more energy to move it about. This movie supposedly only takes place 98 years from now in the year 2122. I never got the impression that the level of technology in the alien movies was anywhere near the level of ST or SW.

The alien creature knows where the proximity of where it's prey is by using pheromones, (a heightened sense of smell), despite it has no eyes to see with. It can smell the fear or the smell of relief the prey gives off so it knew where Ripley was trying to escape to because it could smell the difference in pheromones she was giving off when she got close to the escape shuttle. Ants use pheromone scent that their abdomens leave on the ground that tell other ants of it's hive to follow for food sources.

These guys are just future truck drivers hauling the big cargo of minerals, hence their poor decision making. Did you know Signory Weaver was originally cast for the role of ""Lambert"" and Veronica Cartwright was cast for "RIPLEY". Like one day before the filming began Director Ridley Scott switched their roles. I often wonder how the series would have gone if the switch wasnt made. If your going to watch more of the movies in the series I will STRONGLY SUGGEST you watch PROMETHEUS next. It it the pre-quel to this movie, even though it's made later. THEN watch the sequel ALIENS. i tell every KZbinr reaction maker to do this but no one does. It really will tell you more about the series. You do NOT have the most jumpy reaction maker. Another reaction maker to this movie which I thought was well done is by DEVIN G...make sure it only Devin and not the second one with his wife. For a good female perspective check out DASHA REACTS.
