It is Carpenter at neither his best nor his worst, but his _goofiest_. And thus it is glorious.

Speaking of Rush Hour, John Carpenter originally wanted Jackie Chan to play the role of Wang, but the studio was concerned with Jackie’s grasp of English. Ultimately, Dennis Dun was cast and nailed it.

Rekkai asks: "Why do people explain stuff like that... is that just a trope in movies?" Great spot!! It's so deliberate here that Carpenter even cuts to Wang giving side-eye about it... one of many "meta" moments :D

An all time fav of me and my dad. My dad even raised me to treat things like Jack Burton too, even if I come off as a dork. Also worked because my dad is black and mom is Chinese, and when the random Chinese stuff pop up in his life, he always be Jack

For Syntell - I know you’re familiar with D&D, but don’t know if you knew there was a tabletop role playing game called Feng Shui by Atlas Games, based on the same genre as Big Trouble, Magic Cop, Legend of Zu, all those Hong Kong action movies - it is super-easy to teach and amazing fun.

It IS a good movie, don’t you get it? It’s a satire and attack on the ideals of the original book- the whole thing is of being presented the way that it is, being cheesy, brightly lit sec is deliberate…it’s a sci fi satire with a ton of violence- like verhovens other great movies Robocop and total recall

@14:32 The 3 coins was for consulting the I Ching. They got Hexagram 3/64: Water (Clouds) over Thunder which symbolizes "Difficultly at the beginning" exactly as he says it. Also many translations state "..thus a Superior man brings order out of chaos" another thing Egg says verbatim at the end.

Rekkai was right on with the feeling for this movie as a reminder of a different time. Lots of movies like this in the 80's that were just fun and not like some serious indie movie. I don't think it was a big hit but def a cult classic. Kurt Russell was in a bunch of Disney flicks as a kid. He's been around for a long time. Thanks for reacting!

I was 7 when this movie released and my mom took me to see in theatres. I love this movie and I've seen it more times than I can count. One thing has always confused me in the alley scene. When Jack drives and runs over Lo Pan in that scene you can see and hear that the truck hits or makes physical contact with Lo Pan. For the rest of the movie he is nothing more than a spirit or a dream. His only physical form before the ending battle are the scenes where he is almost a corpse in a wheelchair and he makes contact with people in that form, but in the alley he was clearly in his spirit/dream form and the truck should have passed right through Lo Pan.

I have read that Kurt Russell's performance in this is basically him as a John Wayne type of character, but kind of incompetent. Snake Pliskin from the Escape From New York/LA movies is his take on a Clint Eastwood type of character. If you think about the characters' mannerisms, it makes a lot of sense.

The first one got really complicated when it looked like Dwayne Johnson was going to star in a remake, and suddenly, Fox had a lot to say about what was in the book. But I'm happy to have played a part in continuing Jack Burton's adventures, as well as writing a few Doctor Who spinoffs, too.

If they don’t understand it that’s when…the whole point is Jack burton thinks he’s the heading man hero and he’s a total goofball…he manages that one knife throw but sister from that he messes up, he gets scared etc…makes me wish John carpenter did more comedic stuff and more fantasy stuff to be honest
