While I really enjoyed the events the played out in Alien 3 I really disliked the decision to kill off newt and hicks. From the comic stories to Neill Blomkamp's script there's been soo many great stories that could've been adapted to film. I would've preferred to see those characters return to have events play out differently on Fiorina 161. I think it's fair to say Ressurection could've been an entirely different movie had things went down differently. Also have to admitt the casting on this movie was insane. I would've liked to have seen Charles Dance play a decendant of Weyland, after seeing him play Tywin Lannister I could totally picture him playing a ruthless ceo of a power hungry conglomerate

@@fvoconnor Just rewatched it, it's a god damn sin that they killed off newt and hicks, wtf man... not to mention the movie felt like it was made by rob zombie, horribly dislikeable cast, way to much blood all over the place, horrible cgi the alien looks like Dog shit most of the scenes, the movie was gross just to be gross like with the lice everywhere and finding hicks body just in total chunks, the gross men talking about raping females and molesting kids etc. not to mention finding out that it was "Ripleys" fault that there was basically no guns in this movie, and the cheap ass rip off of terminator with her falling in the fire or whatever tf that was.. just, so damn lame.

I've often appreciated Alien 3. To me it was the perfect example of how Ripley came across this parasitic monster in 1. It destroyed her life. She fought back against it in 2. There was a glimmer of hope but then, like the true parasite it is, this monster took everything away from her, eventually even raping her womb and consuming her life. 3 was the perfect representation of the hopelessness the Alien species represents, the relentless monster that will consume your life, destroy it and then take it over. I understand peoples gripes with it but for me it brilliantly showcases what the Alien can do to a person's life. There's a deep message, for me, about mental illness about it. The Alien is a parasite. Is there a happy ending when parasites in our world takes a host over and forces it to destroy itself for the parasites sake? I appreciate the bleakness. It's the logical conclusion to Alien and all this horrible species represents. While people were pissed that Ripley's seregote daughter died I was busy crying for Ripley, feeling her hopelessness and grief. It was beautiful the way sadness can be in art.

Very well said. I, too, have a soft spot for this movie and think it receives WAY too much criticism. Few, if any, franchises have such a strong start in their first three films. Replete with a primary protaganist's full story arc, and a primary antagonist that stays familiar, while changing enough to be interesting. As an 80's child, whom loves a good tale, and has a near obsession with horror/sci-fi/fantasy, I love the original trilogy. I even tried my best to find positives with the fourth installment (an uphill task, lemme tell ya 😏).

I enjoyed Alien 3's theatrical cut but when that Assembly cut was released with a DVD box set I found I loved that one more. As you said, it came with more character development and in my opinion it also had a lot better flow and made more sense. Alien 3: The Assembly Cut is the sequel that Ridley Scott's Alien deserved. Aliens is the jarhead sequel to Alien, it killed the franchise by deviating too far from what Alien was about and destroyed what people could have expected from a fledgling horror franchise.

Honestly, despite as dark and depressing Alien 3 is, I actually really enjoy this movie. I respect it’s bold move to take the Alien saga into a new direction to create sympathy for the characters. After all, it’s about a monster running around killing people. You shouldn’t be cheering to see them get killed, you should be feeling sorry for them. Both Alien and Aliens stand as their own films, and Alien 3 should as well. I especially love the music score of this movie. It fits the tone of it perfectly in my opinion. Movies like this shouldn’t be trashed on, they should be appreciated and respected on what it took to make and what it was created into. I agree that the studio should have had more faith in David Fincher to complete the movie his own way, but I’m still grateful to David for managing to complete the film as it is.

No one cares that people are unceremoniously killed off in The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones. In fact, it’s applauded. Ripley was also the only survivor of the first film. Newt’s death was shocking, but wasn’t that the point? Isn’t it supposed to be a shocking series? Hicks is likeable, but he didn’t even really benefit from any character development

I met Paul McGann (Golic) at a con yesterday, and I said I’m sorry FOX messed up Alien 3, and he said “Oh yeah they messed Fincher around, but he had the last laugh though - he’s David Fincher!” He also went onto to say he’s never seen the film, but heard about the Assembly Cut, and the chances of Fincher reclaiming it and doing his own cut were probably zero.

_Alien³_ is a work of depressive realism, and I think most people fail to appreciate this. It has the best cinematography and acting in the franchise, and Goldenthal's score is outstanding. People who complain about its bleakness should know that horror films aren't supposed to have happy endings. It takes third place in my top ten films of all time. In contrast to what many people think, I have my suspicions that if Fincher had been given free reign, the final product would be _inferior_ to what we've got here. A bold claim, I know, but hear me out. His initial concept of a wooden planet was just ludicrous and I'm so glad it never went ahead. I also haven't liked any of Fincher's other movies, except for Panic Room, and I think that if he had been given complete creative control, his Alien picture would have been much less subtle in its themes of sacrifice and salvation, similar to the overtly biblical themes in Se7en, which I've always found self-indulgent and a bit pretentious. _Aliens_ was brash and overbearing, a film suited to a more immature audience who care only for gung-ho action. I think that's why Americans love it so much. Clearly this film has much more subtlety and nuance about it. At heart, it is a much more European film. The chestburster coming out of a dog evokes more of an emotional response from the audience, but it makes no sense, since the alien that emerges is the same size as the dog. The birth taking place in a slaughterhouse is very creepy, and I detect some religious symbolism. Jesus was born in a manger amongst oxen, and the alien here emerges from a bovine carcass in a macabre slaughterhouse. Ripley's swan dive into the fire has more emotional weight without the chestburster, as it suggests that she could indeed have been saved by the company. Having it burst out of her mere minutes after she declines Weyland's offer completely nullifies any sense of sacrifice, as she was going to die anyway. My only regret is that Goldenthal's phenomenal score for her death scene is edited to fit the shorter scene, diminishing its power. I also love the Golic subplot, which should never have been dropped. _Alien³_ is where the design of the creature was finally perfected. A feline finesse replaced the clunky man-in-a-rubber-suit vibe that dogged the earlier films. I'm glad they ditched the cumbersome tubes on its back, which really streamlines it into a lethal predator. Most of the rod puppet shots look pretty bad, but there are several shots that look phenomenal. It's too bad they didn't have the digital compositing tools we use today.

Myself I have loved this film sense I was a kid. Dillion was a character I absolutely loved because of his strong character both physically and spiritually. I also loved the intresting harsh nature of Morris and loved he survived in the end. I totally understand why so many people disliked this film, I absolutely loved Hicks and the relationship that Ripley makes with both Newt and Hicks. And this was why whenever I think of a strong female character Ripley is the first one that jumps to mind. But this film and Aliens are the very reason why Ripley is as strong of a character as she is in each film we see the journey of one person through hell and nightmares that would terrify even the coldest of people yet Ripley keeps pushing forward and that's what makes her such a compelling character. I do understand that people were sad to see Newt and Hicks die but given the fact that I have read the original script turned into a comic for Alien 3 I feel it was the right call if your thought process is to put your hero on the shelf for nearly the whole story then sorry you're out the door. Even the execution of the hybrid xenomorph was not impressive in my opinion and given this xenomorph variant would ultimately show up in Alien Resurrection I stand by that statement. Given by this point in the series you needed understand two things the first is Ripley is your lead which means you need her in the story from start to finish the second is Ripley needs to continue to grow so she conquered her fear of the xenomorphs and started a new family in the process now you must take that family away and make her worst fear a reality, the fear of losing her family, no the fear that she is carrying a xenomorph in her. Given that Ripley chooses to fight and save as many of the most irredeemable people possible adds to the great character Ripley is. At this point for me Alien 3 ended the character and the arc of Ripley. At this point the newer stories while not perfect at least show you don't have to be so reliant on Ripley. So keep trying to craft new stories because for years the comics and games did this and that's what's kept the franchise going.
