I fucking love this film! It's SOOO much better than it gets credit for. In the last few years, as I became more aware of the pedigree of the actors populating Fury 161, I became aware of the fact that Sigourney Weaver has been basically marooned in a special prison made for Character Actors!

Cameron said that he would have wanted to see Ripley, Hicks, and Newt make it back to Earth safely and live as a family. It leaves the question of what would be the inciting incident to drive Alien 3. Having said that, I do love the Assembly Cut and I loved learning about the sordid history behind the making of the film. The quadrilogy box set is great.

I know this is an old comment, but my answer to this has always been the series is called “ALIEN” *not* “Ripley”. Let her story be done with Aliens, and let the universe continue without her. The company itself is enough of a force to continually push the alien into conflict. That also makes it matter more when Ripley, Hicks, or Newt return one day in the future

"Ripley, Hicks, and Newt make it back to Earth safely and live as a family. It leaves the question of what would be the inciting incident to drive Alien 3." That's actually very simple: Have them return to Earth, and after a timeskip, they're approached by someone (CIA, ECA, whatever works) who works for whatever government exists in this universe and recruits them to return to LV-426 to mess up the Company, which has built a base there and has been experimenting with Xenos under the government's noses.

There is only 1 CGI shot in the film. The scene where the alien cracks from the water. The rest is all puppet work.
@irllcd13
@irllcd13 6 жыл бұрын
Not true. When its running around the halls there are obvious CGI shots. The lighting gives it away. The texturing is way off and the light/shadows don't fit the rest of the environment. And it's not really doing the movie any favors to say its practical effects look like shitty CGI.

ZX Spectrum That's even worse because it still looks like shitty CGI. It takes a high level of incompetence to make practical look worse than CGI in 1993.
@adamduffield7782
@adamduffield7782 5 жыл бұрын
@@irllcd13 it was actually a new technique that they were trying out. Film a puppet on a green screen. Then superimpose it into the shot they want it in. Yes the technique looks incredibly dated, those shots have aged terribly . But it wasn't practical effects, it was basically the forerunner for full blown cgi. And back in 1993 it was an advancement in what was capable . Don't forget this was at a time the 1st Windows was released(windows 3.1) It's like watching an old 1950s b movie and moaning how bad the special effects are . Well of course they're bad the technology isn't there to do the shot perfectly ! I'm sure with today's technology. If someone went over those frames and fully rendered a cgi xenomorph to replace the puppet one it would look amazing .

I’m not so sure it wasn’t Ripley’s tank the alien was getting into. I’m in the team that say’s there were only the royal face hugger , and one drone who was to protect the queen larvae till it was ready to start laying. Newts tank probably cracked on impact with the beach.

A remnant of a deleted scene shown in the comic book adaptation (and possibly filmed) - the queen chestburster comes out of Newt's mouth (revealing it had originally infected her) in the half-sunken EEV, crawled over to Ripley and entered her mouth. It would have solved the problem of who the chestburster infected, but raises other continuity problems (namely, changing the biology of the chestburster itself).

The score is very grand and sweeping - it's fitting for what I consider the final chapter of the Alien Trilogy. This is the perfect ending to a horror story, exactly in agreement - this tale was never meant to have a happy ending. Elliott Goldenthal composed the score for Tom Cruises "Interview With The Vampire" in 1994. I've really enjoyed your reviews - I watched The Thing reviews last night, back to back. On a side note, I think I read somewhere that Sigourney Weaver has family in England, on her mother's side. She's probably pretty at home with English actors.

Bit of trivia: Carl Chase who plays Frank Ellis was a good friend of my sister Fran (passed of cancer in 2018). I've actually met him, a bit of a character, but a really nice guy. I asked him about the shoot, and he signed for me. My sister was a singer in her spare time (a GP in her day job) and she met Carl as he loves open mic nights, live music etc. He's been in Red Dwarf too as old Lister. He got on brilliant with Fincher and knew that Fox, and David Giler (a power hungry, unreasonably nasty little dickhead according to Carl) were on his case. Carl told me Fincher found support with Charles Dutton, Pete Postlethwaite, Brian Glover and Charles Dance (who were very good friends, being both Yorkshire men). The cast had real camaraderie, as the sets, and atmosphere were very oppressive. Ralph Brown and Paul McGann were constantly asked about Withnail & I by Fincher between takes (who adores that film so much, he wanted to cast Richard E. Grant as Clemens as well, a mini Withnail reunion) , and it was funny at lunchtimes when all the "prisoners" are sitting together and Tom Woodruff would join them in the Alien suit without the tail and head! some interesting bts stuff. I asked him why didn't he look up the access pipe and check for aliens before climbing up with a flare and bucket of explosive slop!

I never believed Charles Dance’s character’s explanation on why he was imprisoned solely because of the scene with the superintendent who warns him if Ripley knew why he was convicted that she would want nothing to do with him. This statement doesn’t sound to me like he got high and botched an operation but, perhaps, he did something more sinister. It would be typical of Ripley and her run of bad luck to hook up with the Sex Slayer of Sector Six. BTW, I enjoy your reviews immensely.

there is no cgi in this movie except for one shot... so ALL of the alien footage is either a guy in a suit or a puppet... the composition/blue screen is terrible, but watching the behind the scenes of the Alien puppet, with like 4 puppeteers operating the creature is fucking amazing... also, the autopsy showed EVERYTHING, every detail, but the studio thought it was too much to show...

Nah - there are loads of scripts that could have been written in which Ripley, Newt and Hicks could have all survived and gone up against the Alien zenomorph with no pulse rifles as Sigorney Weaver demanded. They simply wrote Newt and Hicks out so as to focus on a prison planet theme - which SUX !!! Almost any alternative script idea is better than killing two great characters to focus on a prison planet with no weapons! The film is a boring mess, with a silly cgi zippy dog alien - it deserves the low ratings ...

Whatever your feelings on the film, you can't deny that it signalled the arrival of a great talent. It should be absolutely unwatchable, but because they couldn't take away Fincher's abilities, it is never less than watchable, and for me, better than everything to come since. It's the legacy of Cameron's cannon fodder Aliens that the thread is only working in quite primitive and artificial settings like this one. I didn't buy this, especially the presence of facehuggers on the Sulaco (definitely not possible), but it's not a bad movie, more probably mediocre with some good parts in my eyes. That Aliens are genetically influenced by the host isn't a good idea neither, that is only distracting from Giger's aesthetics and opens room, for countless different and absurd descendants without any core identity. Bird-Aliens ? This can only be a joke, hopefully those ideas won't be developed, black goo, spores and David's chamber of horrors were bad enough. Edit: As i could read below, suspense and plain nihilsm should not be confused. it's a shame that every new director tries to realize his own narcissistic ideas instead of sticking with the essentials (if they are still existing after all)

As the years have gone on, this is one of my favorite movies (Assembly Cut anyway). I feel it's the strongest of the Alien film when it comes to drama, acting and thematic resonance. Hicks and Newt dying straight away was a decision based more on availability of the actors, age and whatnot but to me, that's what loss is like; sudden and unfair. How we deal with it and face our own mortality is where the strength to carry on comes from. And while some see this movie as depressing, I feel Dylan's sermon about the promise of new life is what the film is ultimately about, exemplified by the new dawn that comes at the end of the movie.

The only CGI of the alien u actually see in the film is when it shows its dome crack right before it exploded , every other scene of the alien in the film may look like CGI but its not, its nots stop motion either , its actually something new that was only done one single time in one single film & its in Alien 3 & the alien effects are actually all created by something that they invented during production called Mo-Motion which they use a miniature puppet in front of a green screen , there's no CGI at all. Watch the making of Alien3 if you want a full explanation of what Mo-Motion is because its too hard to discribe in a text but yeah theres only one entire split second of CGI when it comes to the actual alien in the film!!!!! I love alien 3 it has minor flaws because of production such as how the egg got on the Sulaco but i luv the film, it disturbed me as a kid but its actually my very favorite in the entire series because Alien3 is a drama sci-fi horror rather than a thriller sci-fi horror like Alien or a action sci-fi horror like Aliens so it brings a new genre into the series plus its a ballsy film, Its a giant fuck you to the fans & audience & yet it still works beautifully its one of the most underrated final films of any trilogy in the history of cinema💯 its also the darkest goriest , most violent, & has the most beautifully shot scenes of the Xenomorph of any Alien film from the entire franchise!!!! I think its got the best & most realistic death scenes & the explicit extreme amount of blood & gore fit extremely well considering we didn't get barely any in the two first films yet this species is supposed to be the perfect killing machine & Alien3 shows that in spades & what its actually capable of doing to a human body with such little effort because there's not a entire death in the film that aint original or ultraviolent unlike the first two films were(would have loved to see to cut scene of Newts autopsy where it actually shows it but it was so graphic that it was literally removed altogether & that's why its not in the assembly cut) , the chest burster scenes are literally the only gory scenes in the first two films💯 this movie takes the horror to the next level with showing the extreme amount of gore & how deadly the fully grown Xenomorph truely is & its never been duplicated since!!!!!! Alien : Covenant came close but it was mostly all CGI gore rather than practical effects & Alien 3 is the only film where you really get to see all the horror elements that all the other films did not allow you to see because they wanted to make suspense the key to the first two films where in this film you actually get to finally see the alien come out of the shadows & just go running around on a killing spree !!!!!

How the hell does he defend the egg being on the ship when the Queen NEVER left the cargo area? She gets off the ship attacks Ripley and immediately attacks Newt then fights Ripley again and thrown out to space, no egg laying time. And he is so blown how the majority of the cast was "Britesh".

Very underrated and never understood why Fincher doesnt want to talk about it. Feels like the guy has been traumatized by the studios interference. It is amazing that he still achieved to make this movie as a debut director when people thought he was just an assistant when he first showed up on set. I also want to note that the CGI shots are not CGI by definition. Its not done digitally, but rather done using old school faking. I do agree that they look bad but it never really bothered me that much. Saw this at teathres when i was 13 and it left such an impression on me i will never forget. Alien was so original and started everything (best sci-fi and monster ever!), but I could agree with Gary here and this might just be the best Alien movie out there. For me, the Alien story stops here with the trilogy. Alien 4 was a joke and a cash grab. :(

I met Paul McGann (Golic) at a con yesterday, and I said I’m sorry FOX messed up Alien 3, and he said “Oh yeah they messed Fincher around, but he had the last laugh though - he’s David Fincher!” He also went onto to say he’s never seen the film, but heard about the Assembly Cut, and the chances of Fincher reclaiming it and doing his own cut were probably zero.

I don't think this one is as good as the first two but I did enjoy it so it's always a bit of a surprise how much flak others give it. John Oliver did a Retrospective Review of this film and if I remember right, the scenes that look cgi are actually practical effects. It's just that the alien was composited into a background plate and the lighting was off so it looks fake and surprisingly cg. I don't know if that's true or not but it might be worth looking into.

If you don't like the movie, you just didn't experience it right. The movie is beautiful, characters were beautiful, opening was intense, the fact that the movie is not interesting is subjective. Some of the best sci-fi movies ever (Space Odyssey etc.) are kinda boring, but that boringness can be artistic, just like is the case with Finchers's movie. Epicness doesn't mean good, it's just making people feel good, money, commercial. You will make video in 10 years, when you realize how good actually the movie is and say completely different things about this movie. But this movie needs experience. And time. Like jazz. ;)

David Twohy at one point was one of the writers hired to work on a screenplay for this sequel. Like that of his later film Riddick, it would have been a spin-off with the hero not battling extra-terrestrial monsters from the previous films, but the Fiorina prisoners. Needless to say, it ended up in the Twentieth-Century Fox round file.

Thanks for this review. I have never understood why people love Alien but hate Alien3. I've always thought both films are not so different. I respect but have never swooned over the first film, though. It was too slow during the first half, and most characters were flat-out boring. I therefore prefer Alien3 to Alien, as the threat is apparent from the beginning and I liked the characters a little more. I wept for Newt and Hicks though. I respect the ending but seeing Ripley die tore my heart out. I love Aliens most. It is in my TOP10 list of favourite films ever. It is the perfect mix of action, interesting stories, cool characters, strong lead characters, emotional investment, suspense, etc. So, I guess, my ranking list goes Aliens > Alien3 > Prometheus > Alien > Alien: Ressurection. I have not watched Alien: Covenant yet, though.

I think because this movie is too cynical. You can have all kinds of dark movies, but somehow, at least one character has to stand for something better, for some kind of applied idealism. And that is what I miss in this movie. For example, to kill off Newt, is just too much after her ordeal in the last movie. She earned her rescue. And now in this she is killed off screen. It’s too much...

I used to hate this movie. Now it's my favourite of the entire series. There are still things that I think don't work, but it's the darkest, most beautifully downbeat sequel of all time. Now the only film of the series that I think has dated terribly is Aliens. It's so fuckin corny I can hardly watch it. When I saw it in the cinema I thought it was the greatest film I'd ever seen, now I can't watch it. Weird.

@PhasedPlasmaRifle InThe40WattRange I watch the thing many times and the dog scene in there has no effect on me. But the one in Alien 3 hurts me so much I don't know why. Maybe because the monster burst from inside while the dogs in The Thing were attacked from the outside.

I've been watching this on repeat for the last couple of days now.. I love it now... hated it as a 15 year old. I find it easy to look past old CGI. Same as I can look past the original Clash of the titans clay may.and The 50's Alexander the Greats poor costumes, sets and small armies. That's what great acting and detection hide. I love the chunk of brain or flesh on the end of the priest guys crow bar. Before reeducation. Looks like Ripley holds it like a newborn as they fall... offering comfort?????????? Sorry that was so long... I've had a couple

Alien 3 isn't the worst in the franchise, it's just no where near the greatness of the 1st two. Summing up this movie is simple. Ripley would have checked out the Sulaco bow to stern, port to starboard, every millimeter. After the 1st movie and the second, she wouldn't want any more surprises. Alien 3 makes no sense.

From what I saw from the first Alien is that a facehugger has one egg to impregnate a host. It can’t do two. So Newt wasn’t facehugged lol. And to do it again to a dog or ox was against their biology.

The ox is not dead when the chest burster hatches. It clearly starts moving and struggling just before. No different to Kane in Alien and the colonist in Aliens, it is simply comotosed after being impregnated. It's strung upside down, so it just can't move that much. And the prisoners aren't exactly bothered enough to check if it's alive, so just assume "Oh, it just keeled over and stayed unresponsive, so it must be dead."
