I pretty much agree. I think you could have left things with Cameron's Aliens ending. It would work as a duology where the first film is a nightmare and the second ends on being able to sleep again free from nightmares after facing that fear. Cameron is really good with the sequel that flips the themes of the first movie on its head and just leaving things there, like T2. But if you're going to make a third movie you have to loop back around to the fear and the bleakness. You couldn't have the tonal switch from Alien to Aliens and then have a third movie be more Colonial Marines type action. The penal colony and the religious angle in 3 was perfect and you really did have to kill off Hicks and Newt. They would have just complicated everything and you'd also have had to recast Newt, so there's that too. Alien 3 is a great way to round out the trilogy

I don’t know if I can put my finger on any one reason, but I have always loved Alien 3. The amazing Fincher direction, the Elliott Goldenthal music - which to me is one of the best of the entire series next to Jerry Goldsmith’s Alien score - WONDERFUL characters and the actors that brought them to life……so many different aspects. Bringing focus back to the horror elements instead of all the action as in Aliens (which I love), but it was good to get back to more of a cosmic horror feel which A3 does. I know people were very upset about Newt and Hicks getting killed off, but to be honest that made the emotional impact of this film all the more visceral for me at least. Thanks for your review, I’ve been getting back into the Alien films, especially with the announcement of new projects, so I’m always into talking about this franchise. Thanks for a great vid!

I loved Alien 3 from when I first saw it in the early 1990s. That said, The Assembly Cut is far superior than the theatrical cut. It fixes a lot of the pacing issues & also reintroduces a lot missing scenes….oh & it rectified the problem with the toxic waste disposal that’s seen / mentioned but never used. Alien 3 is something of a flawed masterpiece & I think after the upbeat ending of Aliens with Ripley, Hicks & Newt being almost a family people found the dystopian vibe of Alien 3 hard to get their heads round. Hicks & Newt needed to die, to continue to keep Ripley isolated. Throughout the films Ripley lost everything; the crew of the Nostromo, her daughter, the marines. From the moment the Fox fanfare starts to end & distort, it helps set the tone for the film. This isn’t a pleasant film & I think Fincher did incredible even though the studio fucked his vision up so so badly. Not to mention his DP; the legendary Jordan Cronenweth had to leave the shoot due to his advancing Parkinson’s. The cast is absolutely incredible; Brian Glover (Andrews) played some awesome roles in his time. Then throw Ralph Brown, Charles S Dutton & Charles Dance into the mix & it’s just excellent. Fun Fact: I went to art college not far from where they filmed the EEV impact & Ripley washing up on the beach; Blast Beach in Seaham, North East England. Also parts of the blast furnaces that are on the Tees Estuary feature in the matte paintings; although they filmed some scenes at Blyth Power Station. It’s worth noting that the same area of the Tees Estuary was the influence for the opening sequence of Blade Runner. Ridley Scott attended the same college I previously mentioned. Due to him growing up in the area, he took a lot of inspiration from the blast furnaces & oil refineries that dotted the landscape. During filming Tom Woodruff from Amalgamated Dynamics spent up to thirteen hours inside the creature suit for certain scenes.

The special effects fixes and some of the other stuff sound interesting, but it's also making a lot of edits I'm not sure I like, like cutting Ripley's bitter and sardonic line "sounds good to me" after Morse threatens to smash her head in, because it sounds "pathetic", removing a lot of lines because they sound "cheesy" while keeping the chest-bursting at the end, the cheesiest part of the theatrical version, the editor declaring that they had to use the dog-birth because the ox themself makes no sense being on the colony... but then keeping all other scenes related to the ox. Also one of their other biggest reasons for keeping the dog one is the guy looking for his dog needing a reason for looking in the vents, but as pointed out in this video why does he suspect his dog is in the vents in the first place? (Another possible alternative could have been to keep the ox, and cut the lines of him looking for his dog, just having him investigate a sound or something. Which would remove the biggest issue with the ox-birth in the Assembly cut.) Also their argument that the dog fits better because the breed is known for "strength and aggression" ...something oxen are not??? I don't even actively prefer the ox-birth, I feel both versions have pros and cons, but I just find their arguments weird. Furthermore they say this about the Assembly Cut: "The heart-wrenching funeral is now mixed in with the terrifying Alien emerging anticlimactically from a totally character-devoid, already dead cow." And like... that's one of my favorite scenes of either official version of the film, with it's editing and stark, bleak and tragic juxtaposition of death and birth. It's one of the biggest pros of the ox-birth. Honestly at this point, I feel most fan edits of Alien3 should just make a dog version and an ox version. Also they are adding a red filter to all Alien POV shots. I can't know if it will work in the context of the film without seeing the final thing, but it could end-up really cheesy. They compare it to the Predator POV, which I also find a bit cheese, but works in Predator because it has a very different tone than Alien, especially Alien3. (Also if they are learning into the dog thing, red is an odd choice of colour.)

@ExpertContrarian4 ай бұрын
@@Painocuswell that’s disappointing to hear. Someone will just have to fix his cut
@Painocus4 ай бұрын
@@ExpertContrarian I also noticed a few more things, that I had to go back to check to confirm, so wasn't in my first comment. In the workprint of the film, the "looking for the dog" scene was already as I suggested editing it, meaning all the lines talking about Spike was added in after the fact to tie-in with the dog-birth. So the scene does make sense without the dog-plot, since it was not originally meant to be him looking for the dog in the first place. The editor of this fan cut would know this, because they use the workprint as a reference in other places; even taking audio from it to fix a line-read error (one of the edits I like). They also seems to not understand some aspects of the plot: one of the reasons they give for using the dog-birth is that the facehugger prop in the ox-scene looks different than they usually do, and they makes reference at one point to "two facehuggers". There is only one facehugger, and it was specifically designed to look different, as a subtle (since we don't get a good look at it) hint to the audience that it is different from a regular facehugger; it's bigger and more resilient because it is a queen-facehugger, it carries two embryos, one for a queen and one for a drone to protect the queen, and needs to survive longer on it's own and infect a second host for the drone. Also as I said one of their reasons for cutting the ox-birth is they don't think it makes sense for the ox to be there... but we are literally shown in the Assembly Cut the type of work the oxen are used for. Meanwhile we are not given an explanation for why the dog is there. That being said I don't think a dog or oxen being there needs as much explanation as they think the latter do. No the main explanation problem with the dog is something else. They kinda hand-wave parts of, calling it just a "scaling" issue. The problem is the alien is born already with fully formed legs out of a dog that just seconds earlier were about the same size as it. This "scaling issue" is something I've seen take multiple people out of the moment (wondering how the alien fit in the dog), which includes taking them out of the emotion of the funeral scene the editor was worried about the ox-birth being anticlimactic to. But the "with fully formed legs" part is important too. See the ox being dead (something the editor complained about) isn't there for no reason. The alien killed the ox like they regularly kill their hosts, but since it was a larger animal (than a human or say a dog) it stayed in it's corpse to develop further than it's "snake"/"worm" stage before leaving. That's the explanation for why it comes out with legs. This *could* (pure speculating here) also be why Ripley has a nose-bleed at the same time as the alien is born, the queen embryo inside her either did something to, or just hit a natural point in it's development that, cause the drone to go from hiding-and-devolving to actively taking out potential future threats to the queen. *Edit:* Also I almost forgot. I don't know if this is "canon" anymore, but originally the xenomorphs needed to eat to keep growing. There is a cut scene from the first film in-between the chest-bursting scene and the next time we see it where it's explained that the alien raided the crew's food supplies, which is why it's suddenly so much more developed. The dead ox would provide the drone in Alien3 with ample food to grow on without it having to go out looking for more in it's more vulnerable "snake"/"worm state, like the one in the first Alien had to.

Very well put. I say that in essence, ALIEN 3 is the last film so far that takes the premise of ALIEN seriously. Dan O'Bannon created and wrote ALIEN inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, and ALIEN 3 embodies the nihilism of it. Indeed ALIEN 3 makes the ALIEN franchise complete as the end of Ellen Ripley's story, and as in Lovecraft's stories, there are no happy endings in real life most of the time, nor loved people always survive. I also described ALIEN and ALIEN 3 as the adult films within the franchise, while ALIENS is the family friendly adventure for the kids, hence its ending. ALIEN 3 showed exactly more what the previous films we're told about the Company, Weyland Yutani was all about with their appearing at the end. And Ellen Ripley sacrificed herself to a world that didn't even know about her, as well as convicts that looked for redemption for their past crimes. Then the most unlikely survivor made it at the end, and his laughter was not of mockery for the dead, but for that whole irony of his survival and their sacrifice. Indeed ALIEN 3 and mostly The Assembly Cut are great films in the franchise, again, the only film so far after the first 2 to take the essence of ALIEN seriously, and in fact it was not even a flop at the theater at the time.
@MrCarpen7er4 ай бұрын
Dan O´Bannon was NEVER inspired by H.P. Lovecraft. His story and script is simply a rehash of John Carpenter´s Dark Star which he was part of as well. Also, the creature´s life cycle was Ronald Shusett´s idea, not O´Bannon´s.

In other interviews O'Bannon himself had said that he considered the Xenomorphs to be blood related to the Old Ones. All of this is documented and both in articles and videos, all you need to do is look them up instead of blathering things you clearly don't know about yet. Also, dude Dark Star is not just John Carpenter's, it was both his and O'Bannon because they both studied together in film school and were partners. The only freaking thing you said right was that Ron Shusett was the one that came up with the idea of the life cycle because Dan O'Bannon had writers block and he told Shusett about it. O'Bannon was technically homeless and crashing at Shusett's since they were friends and Ron had said that he came up with the idea of the impregnation while at the toilet. He told O'Bannon about it, and Dan whom also suffered Crohn's disease, thought it would be a great idea, since he didn't want the Alien to mimic someone to get on board the ship. So yeah, look up more of Dan O'Bannon's video interviews that are not controlled by FOX and you will find out more stuff about it.

Alien 3 extended cut was better than the theatrical version. The acting and character development was good, the story line was lazy writing, the bleak tone was consistent with the first Alien film.

I always feel hate for alien 3 is very dependent on when you saw it. I think older fans who saw it when it came out already well versed with the franchise hated it. While those who came to the franchise during the trilogy days (1992-1997) either knew at as the 'bad' one or if they (like me) knew nothing and it was the first film in the series they saw have an killable fondness for it. Then fans post quadrilogy I find are often more favourable to it in general. Personally I think it has one of the greatest act 3 setups that I don't think any film has really ever beaten. The entire prisoners running through the tunnels as bait and closing doors is such a pitch perfect sequence with such simple elements that visually read so brilliantly in a fast paced action/horror scenario. I can't think of any movie that's matched it in the alien franchise or other horror franchise. Also when the first avp on pc in 1999 added an alien 3 inspired level you know we did multiplayer matches recreating the run through the tunnel

Unpopular opinion but i think the 3rd movie is better than the first. I love the totally depressing atmosphere.

I've always liked Alien 3 and it's great despite the shit show behind the scenes. What I like about it is that it's bleak and depressing and i think that's just too much for some people. Killing off Hicks and Ripley was a shock but it's actually a good move plot wise. Ripley needs to feel alone and threatened from all sides. If Hicks was alive he would always be protecting her and would be pushing a love story. If Newt was alive Ripley would always be chasing her around trying to protect her and too much focus would be placed on her. By killing them both off the whole story focuses on Ripley and her grief and pain. Great review.

Here's a thought, let Ripley go raise Newt, and let Hicks be the main Protagonist for Aliens 3 with only a cameo from Ripley and Newt before Hicks gets into the shit. Instead of what they freaking did... And just to be fair to your video and not seem like an asshole, I do enjoy watching this movie as well, because it definitely makes me laugh, but I hate it for what the overall story is.

I despised Alien 3 when it came out. Aliens was one of the most-watched videotapes in our house, along with The Predator and The Terminator. All the years of anticipation and then in the first few minutes they throw away the previous movie completely, it was quite a shock. Then to top it off, the main character dies in the end, in the exact way she always feared the most. It was just soul crushing and I already as a kid even liked movies without a happy ending (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) but this was too much. Over the years though and especially in light of the ridiculous sequels I've come to appreciate it and even use the exact words that you do: it is the DEFINITIVE end to the story of Ellen Ripley and the Xenomorphs. Like it or hate it, it closes the book completely.

That Neo Tokyo track in the background is class Also, since i've considered Alien 3 to be the end of the franchise Resurrection was a fun watch to me because it feels like a non-canon wacky offshoot of the franchise that's focused on having fun more than anything else

The fact the theatrical release is in any way watchable is testament to the talents of Fincher, Weaver and the cast and crew.

you gotta see romulus its genuinely super good and switches up from all the prometheus/covenant stuff without removing it, plus it shows more of the xenomorph lifecycle. it feels like an actual alien movie again

I believe the story of the Xenomorph ended after Alien 3 (extended cut). People can say all they want about that film, but it wasn't as much of a betrayal when compared to Prometheus and Covenant (and especially Romulus). At least Alien 3 didn't ruin the Xenomorph's mystery and legacy. Edit: In terms of how the egg got on the Sulaco, I've always believed that the Queen was able to lay one in the dropship before she got out to fight Ripley.

Ironic how the main antagonist of the Alien franchise was always a multi interplanetary corporation and now in reality, its corporate America that’s the real villain of the franchise.

why didn't they all go inside the waste room where they initially trapped the alien? that way they would've been safe, till the rescue team came.

I liked the theatrical version - but struggled with the dog-birth thing, and especially where Ripley cuddled the chest burster as she fell into the furnace. I loved the assembly cut though as it was much more fleshed-out and it didn't have Ripley cuddling her baby alien at the end!

I love Alien 3, I love the dreadness & bleakness of it. Alien Saga is always just a trilogy in my mind. The first one is a claustrophobic horror, the second is action packed war movie, the 3rd one is just a pure depression in a movie ( and I like it!)
@drhemi886 ай бұрын
I have to agree with you, it only took me about 30 years to figure it out. I saw this when I was a kid on HBO and was unimpressed at the time. Years later with the assembly cut I was more accepting to it and now I'm more on the side of this being a really good movie(assembly cut). Is it a good follow-up to Aliens? No, but it is a good alien movie even if it wasn't what we wanted.
@lesterdarke9 ай бұрын
I actually prefer Alien 3 - Assembly Cut to Aliens- I like that there's more existential horror and that the Alien isn't just shot up with ease. Aliens kinda made xenomorphs feel disposable.

I remember watching every movie back-to-back as a teenager. When I saw the ending of Alien 3 it made me really sad. Not because I didn't like the ending but becaues I knew that this wasn't the real ending but I wished it was. It would have been one of the best horror trilogys ever made if they stopped at 3.

Them killing Bishop, Hicks, and Newt (specifically newt) really soured my first watch and I kinda hated the move just because of that and didn't give it a fair shot. I'll try rewatching it with a fresh mindset
@Carnelust9 ай бұрын
You can say killing off the characters from the second movie was a good choice but that doesn't change the fact they did it in the worst way possible. You can, like, incorporate that into the story instead of just doing an off-screen opening. Show and tell. creating a connection to the characters do add to the effect, maybe use it to influence the other character's perspective or feelings, adding emotional depth to them and affect the audience maybe. A tragic scene of Newt dying in Ripley's arms or hicks drawing his final breaths to speak his last words, there's a million ways to do that better. EDIT: Sorry if the tone sounded hostile, that was not my intention.
@FraudDepartmentYT9 ай бұрын
It's a fair enough perspective, but Michael Biehn was genuinely pissed that they were killing off his character and Carrie Henn was to old to reprise her role. I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to a recast, but if there just gonna die anyway might as well just rip the band aid off.
@YggdrasilMedia9 ай бұрын
I never felt like they were thrown away...there's the morgue scene and the funeral is one of the emotional high points for me. Their deaths linger over the first half of the film and really drives home how unforgiving this universe is.

I honestly believe if Hicks and Newt had not been destroyed off screen before the movie even started and had been a part of this movie it would have been successful. I think a great portion of the audience basically just clicked off moments after the movie began because of that. And therefore we're not open to what the movie had to offer.
