Agree about the impact of the characters - 'Aliens' after a single viewing you fall in love with Hudson, Vasquez, Hicks, Newt and Bishop but after two viewings of 'Romulus' so far, I can't genuinely even name any character or feel any kind of emotional attachment beyond surface-level 'cool' moments that they find themselves in situationally (the android was the most memorable of all of them) vs getting a handle on their personalities which I don't think were very well developed.

This movie was hollywood slop. It's Alien in name only. The story makes zero sense. The nostalgia berries make zero sense. The characters make zero sense. The alien lifecycle makes zero sense. Associating this film with the failed trilogy of Prometheus makes zero sense. This movie is just like Prey. It's targeted at people who have zero understanding of the lore and will just eat up mediocrity.

100% agree. There were people leaving in the cinema I was in too. I enjoyed the first hour but the callbacks, rook effects, the offspring, black goo and lack of originality in its use of the aliens completely ruined it for me. It looks great and I think the two leads did a good job with what they were given but this ended up being the same nonsense as Prometheus

The characters are the weakest part, but it is still the best Alien film we have received for 40 years. This 4k is one of the best (shot with digital camera) that I have seen, however.

It's a letdown because I was expecting something original and unique, but rather it's a lot of homage to the previous alien movies. What really stand out for me are the facehuggers and the character Andy. I did enjoy it a lot the second time I watched it though.

4th best alien film for me behind the original trilogy. Regarding the aliens and facehuggers there's some great shots in here but the storyline in general was boring and predictable. I will watch it again some day but it won't be for a while. I'm glad the production team were obviously huge fans of the franchise but it just went in a different direction to my personal taste.

I streamed the film. Midway through, I'd had enough and left the room. This film is quite literally everything you don't want from an Alien film. You might as well call it Alien: Friends in Space, the one where a group of teens venture into space and can't act to save their lives. Don't worry, I went to see Dial of Destiny, and people at that showing got up and left. Cleanse yourself and watch Alien 3. You'll wish you never despised that film ever again....

Hmm, let's see here... Alien is good, Aliens is very good, Alien 3 is ok, I guess, but I do not like the beginning of it... Alien Resurrection is ok too, but the ending made me go wtaf, and it feels a bit like a cash grab, since the ending of 3 told us that the story of Ellen Ripley was now over and done with. Prometheus and Covenant are a bit too complicated for their own good. I haven't watched Romulus yet, but I'll say this, I try not to get my hopes up, because from what I've heard and seen so far, I probably won't like it very much. All the "nostalgic throwbacks" to the old movies kinda tell me that Romulus can't stand on its own two feet, instead it has to use the old movies as crutches. And the "offspring" gives me "newborn" vibes, and that abomination was what I really didn't like about Resurrection. But I guess I'll just have to wait and see, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. Maybe...

I bought the 4K iTunes version… glad I didn’t buy the disc even though I know it’s superior. Watched it last night and was disappointed. I felt it was nothing new. Well made but the characters and story were flat to me. For those who liked it, I’m sure they love the disc.

For me everything after Alien 3 is "not needed" because the end of Ripley means the end of what I care. I like pretty much all movies in this franchise to various degrees, this one included, I don't "hate" any of them. But just being "in the world" of Alien is not enough to make me put those movies on the same level as the Helen Ripley trilogy. That said this one was well made. Too many horrible self references to past movies, yes, but the movie was like a good fan fiction. I say that as a positive thing, lol.

Do we “need” any movie? No. I’ve always hated that argument and found it lazy. Did we need De Palma’s remake of Scarface? Or John Carpenter’s remake of The Thing? Nope. But I’m sure glad those films exist. You can’t pick and choose what films, especially remakes and prequels/sequels, we need or don’t need.

I felt exactly the same as you after I saw it. I was so disappointed with what they did with this movie. The trailer looked so bad ass and so promising. But then they just shat the bed. They tricked us. Scott's black goo shoved back in there. All these rehashed cringy "greatest hits" moments. So many stupid decisions story wise, resulting in things that don't add up with the original movies, lore wise. No, they didn't think this through enough. The only good thing here, like you also mentioned, was the actor who played Andy. The rest of the movie just looked good, but was pretty hollow.

I loved this film and it was better than covenant n Prometheus they were ok but not great this had good story n character were great Andy was good he was surprise to find out he was not a human after all but robot like human and girl who was Andy friend was in civil war she played better character in this then that film . Your first KZbinr to bash this film not many ppl like evil dead by this director and amazon sold out of it quickly I had wait till after Christmas get it much into new year steelbook was gone n this was first aliens movie come out on vhs in long time . Most popular movie KZbinr in search of physical media he like it a lot and gave it good review as 4k . I saw in theater I was hooked into begging n to end .

To be frank we did not need the previous two either. At this point it's a cash grab throwing shit at the wall and seeing what stick with the least amount of effort from writers. Alien Romulus is a movie you can watch as an alien fan while decorating your front room, you think you've missed a bit and the realise oh they did this in the original 4 movies. All the other bits are the same old ideas ripped from every other movie in the last 15 years. I've seen it twice once at the cinema and once on streaming and I can't tell you a single characters name but I can reel of the copy paste jobs and cliché fan service instantly.

I really liked the design and sound..but as for the film its just the same old thing over and over again..couldnt stand the rook effects either..very disrespectful to ian holm..the auto aim pulse rifle😂 give me a break..the zero g acid blood..where were the alien body parts as they would have been floating around as well...i wish they would just stop flogging a dead horse. There are only two alien movies and thats the first two.

I enjoyed Romulus and I like the relationship between Rain & Andy. Definitely some nods to some of the Alien movies but some are going to call that fan service, I thought it was a nice touch. It's better than Prometheus and Alien Covenant that's for sure.

Repeated dialogue is one of my biggest pet peeves. I can't stand that crap. It's so cheap and unimaginative. I don't get the reasons for it. It's just stupid. Repeated scenes too. Gosh. Be original. Great review Rob!

Couldn't agree with you more. Was carefully excited for this. It started off great for me, but once they got to that cgi character scene, the whole thing went downhill for me. It was the greatest hits of past films with no suspense. I was so close to leaving the cinema but held on in the hope of some redeeming feature, but it was not to be. One of the biggest disappointments of 2024.

Yeah this film falls at the bottom of the pile for me, as much as I Hated Covenant the first time it grew on me marginally over time, I didn't hate this as much first time watching it but the more I think about it the more egregious it becomes, its just member-berries wrapped up in new shiny wrapping paper, nice to know it looks good on 4K .

I agree Rob - crap movie, horrible ill defined characters save for the android. The first half was just okay but the second half, urgh! The call backs to the other movies were aweful and unnecessary. "Get away from her you b@#$%!" The delivery of this line was just aweful and why did the character even say it?????????????????? An easy pass.
