I love the care and thought that goes in to these deluxe releases but really dislike that this is the direction 4k is going in. I couldn’t care less about packaging, I just want the 4k movie. A $80 version of ‘The Conversation’ is nice but I would never buy it. Give me a basic release for $24.99.

They did release a basic 4K release from studio canal - it’s technically the UK edition but you can get from OrbitDVD for $29.99. That’s what I did. I don’t need all that junk in the big space taking box.

💯 My favorite packaging is Criterion...standard clear plastic case, no slipcover and small pamphlet that fits inside. I'm after the movie...not all the trinkets.

Did the same! My only complaint was the bonus disc being Japanese only. Wouldn’t mind as much if the standard edition that just came out had the same disc with all the same features and did have English subtitles. Which means they could have done it with the Japanese release but just didn’t

My favorites: Body Double The Conan Chronicles (I think this was early january) Demolition Man The Exorcist III Fist of Legend The Hitcher The Legend of Fong Sai Yuk Collection Seven Samurai (Ok, I haven't opened it and watch it yet, but it got to be good, filled with special features) The Good the Bad The Weird A Bitter Sweet Life I think only Conan and Fong Say Yuk was US releases.

What's the remote control trick?

I think he means the "Top menu" trick. You just wait until it's loaded and you have the region error on the screen. Then press stop, which takes you back to the logo. Then press the top menu button on the remote several times quickly. Sometimes it bypasses the region lock, sometimes you just go back to the region error. It works about 70% of the time in my experience.

Just got the new SE7EN 4k in the mail and for some reason I didn’t realize it wasn’t a normal 4k case with a slip which I prefer. Rather it’s this foldable case which has some cool art on it but the damn disc is wedged in between the packaging which makes it a pain to get out. Oh and the spine is backwards hahaha

I love collecting Blu-rays & 4K 1,690 movies and counting but it's becoming very expensive because the physical is dying more quickly than I predicted. Will continue to buy movies but $55+$65 for new releases is too much for me, obviously I wait for sales but some movies get out of print very quickly. Time to collect everything we can before it disappears.

i bought the conversion set as soon as I saw it. The movie is amazing and I never had a phsyical copy. The extras just make it so much better. Thanks for the recommendations I love this channel for this reason

I do like special collectors releases, but I wish they would also release a simple disc-inna-box at the same time too _(they dod do that sometimes)_ Like the Star Wars Skywalker 4k collection. They released it as a lovely massive long boxset, but it's so annoying as it takes up so much valuable space on my shelf. A simple edition which is 9 discs wide would have been preferable _(which I think they then released a year or two later)_

@ it was a US release. Checked Amazon just now Nov. 26th of 2023 for $7.99 Black Friday deal. It came out in 2022 in the states. Solid movie. Great 4K transfer. Should be in everyone’s collection in some fashion. Bare bones, collectors edition or steel.

That Oldboy release was bullshit. It was $75 and the lowest i saw it go was $45. Art cards i'll never look at, booklet i'll never read, just junk to upscale the price. But now its out of print, which was the only way to get the movie on 4K. Arrow released a vengeance trilogy boxset which included 4K oldboy and that was cheaper than that. What's with these 4K prices getting ridiculous.

I was shocked to see that The African Queen also got a 4K UHD release back in November, and that earlier this month (December, 2024), George Stevens' hilarious romantic, comedy, and somewhat Capra-esq film The Talk of the Town got not only a Blu-Ray release, but in 4K UHD! I have been waiting for an update from the DVD released over a decade ago. Also, Paramount will be releasing 4KUHD releases of Chinatown (this time, without the sequel), and Once Upon a Time in the West again next year, since the last batch was limited (though West is still available imported), and Uncle Buck will also get a 4KUHD release in February. Of course, we also finally got Hitchcock's Mr. and Mrs. Smith on Blu-Ray this last summer, as well as Stevens' I Remember Mama in October, and Fred Zinneman's The Nun's Story in the spring. Paramount's new 4KUHD of To Catch a Thief, I understand, is a big improvement over their earlier 4K remastered release. I am also anxious to pick up John Ford's The Searchers, which I have waiting forever to be released on 4KUHD; thank God that I didn't buy the old Blu-Ray.

Shocked to see you have this release of Pulp Fiction. It would be on my worst list. You said it was not that expensive....60 bucks? Now, if you had the UK version, I would probably agree. Their case is sturdy, ours is flimsy cardboard. Their popup has velcro pads to hold the flap down, and it was cheaper. Our version is overpriced and cheaply-made.

I didn't know where to ask this, maybe I need to check your other socials. Are there any bad blurays? I know some 4ks are bad upgrades/remasters but regular blurays are from the source prints right? Can I trust that any bluray would be fine or is there something particular to look out for?

I’ve bought Green Room and Creep from Second Sight Films. They seriously have the best packaging ever. A little pricey but worth every penny. Their covers are beautiful and the transfers are even better.

Godzilla Minus One's 4K steelbook is my favourite, but probably most of that is from my excitement to see the movie and then how much I enjoyed it. Fantastic movie, looks gorgeous, and sounds incredible. That said, the steelbook design with the slipcover is really cool, the bonus features are fantastic, and it even comes with a poster.

This hobby is getting so wacky. The Conversation is a good movie. Saw it years ago on DVD. Could pull it off the shelf to watch again if I wanted…but why would I part with a ton of cash for a big box set of a single film?

Exactly...all I want is a 'Criterion-like' standard release with a small booklet that fits inside the blu-ray case. All these 'box sets' take up too much MONEY and SPACE! 😡

Pulp Fiction wasn’t a 2024 release, it came out on 4K in 2022. A new special edition shouldn’t really count especially when it’s the same transfer

Could you maybe share this region-free remote trick on Panasonic players? My UB820 is region B locked, but I have several region A blurays with special features in my collection.

As far as I know, no player comes region unlocked straight from the manufacturer. Jeff, probably without realizing it, has bought an unlocked player from a reseller. The trick though is: You turn on your Panasonic player. While on the menu/home screen, you press eject so the disc tray comes out. While the disc tray is out & you are on the player's menu/home screen, press and hold 1 on your remote until the disc tray goes back in and the player restarts. Your player is now on Region A. Do the same but press 2 on your remote until the disc tray goes back in and the player restarts, thus switching to Region B. Let me know if it works! :)

Don’t have The Abyss on 4K due to classification issues for the UK release, but MGM did a fantastic job with the 4K for The Terminator. Lots of deep blacks, crisp blues, and still retains that grimy and gritty feel.

Bringing Out the Dead was one of my most-wanted titles on Blu-ray -- and it arrived on 4K as well. I sold my old D.V.D. back in 2006 when I started buying Blu-ray Discs...and I waited (very patiently) for Paramount -- or Criterion -- to release this film for many years.

I honestly do not understand why Pulp Fiction have that boring dark / black and white image artwork on its base Disc cover and not the actual red and yellow original. The original red and yellow is SOOOOO much better. This annoys me with alot of the 4K versions of movies..they are trying to do something that is not needed. I honestly just want the original artwork for all the movies.. Nice list.
