Prometheus and Covenant give the audience too much credit. For example, for years now fans have been debating whether the inhabitants of Planet 4 were actually Engineers or not. Ridley Scott had to confirm they weren't Engineers recently in an interview. Despite the fact that the movie tells you, through David and Walter's flute conversation. The colony on Planet 4 are the Engineers second attempt after humans. Humans = David. The first version given the ability to create, but used the gift to be violent and unruly. Walter = people on Planet 4. Unable to create making them more docile and servile. These two Android characters aren't having said discussion about themselves for no reason. However media literacy is dead so this conversation has gone over most people's heads. Prometheus and Covenant have dozens of more examples of context, visual and verbal clues being missed by it's audience.

Maybe, even if the alien didn't know exactly what a pulse rifle is they are smart enough to pick up that 'lunch' appears to be pointing something at them and their demeanor seems different enough for it to want to hesitate before going in for the munch. @KnightYellow2 ай бұрын
Makes a lot of sense, if you look for them you can find all sorts of videos of dogs and cats managing to scare off bears and other bigger predators by not backing down or even charging them, every animal has a survival instinct and predators are no exception, when a prey animal stands its ground it typically causes them to stop and reassess the situation because even if they win they can still get injured enough that it will screw them over in the long term.
@mrcheesemunch2 ай бұрын
@@KnightYellow Yeah often times the Freeze response can save an animals ass because most predators expect to chase and catch something so their prey just...standing there makes them have second thoughts, since it's not like they know for sure what they want to eat isn't some crazy honey badger level threat. If I remember right I think there's some debate about Face being another fear response in addition to Fight, Flight, Fawn and Freeze. It's kinda in between Fight and Freeze.

Xenomorphs generally will just kill you, it won't be pleasant but most of the time it's a quick death. Getting chest bursted is truly nightmarish, especially if you know what's gonna happen ahead of time. I think this was great I just hope they don't forget about Xenomorphs, like if there was a future where they all changed then that would be super lame but they should always make use of the fact that Xenomorphs change based on the host, it's too much fun not to. I want to see a Xenomorph Horse damn you or maybe even a Queen that bursts out of something bigger than usual.

I really wanted to love this film. Sadly, my utter expectations fell into deep disappointment. The first half an hour or so of the movie was awesome. However, for me I think the huge lack lustre factor came from no real feel of dread like the original films engaged us with. The whole concept of scavenger hunters landing on a deserted space station had so much potential but failed in delivering an ominous feel throughout, something that both Alien and Aliens immersed us with from start to finish. A commentary version is a must have with the Alien franchise otherwise perspectives cannot be discussed or appreciated. This is why your channel rocks my friend. Keep up the great work.

Can someone explain to me how they could find Big Chap among the remains of the Nostromo, if he was not on board when it exploded? Remember, Big Chap explodes in space after Ripley incinerates it with the Narcissus's engines. You can even hear the explosion of the bug when Ripley is looking at it through the airlock. Also, when Ripley releases the capsule from its anchor, the Nostromo and its cargo leave Ripley behind at high speed before exploding, thousands of kilometers later. Also, if the xenomorph had survived, it would travel in the opposite direction to the ship, due to the impulse received from the Narcissus's engines. The beginning of ALIEN ROMULUS is not plausible. The Nostromo and the refinery were vaporized by the explosion of its 2.8 terawatt fusion reactor. Three explosions, which left few remains larger than the head of a pin, after such a detonation.

I thought the Prometheus callout in the lab was a little too on the nose. Prefer the more subtle nod. Way too much fan service and "memberberries" in this movie. The reason that they took out the warning fire scene is they'd already set up that the guns auto aim. That would have just confused the audience. I also think the xenomorphs are supposed to be extremely smart. They mirror our biology and have those giant craniums. The levitating visual has been done in Aliens when Bishop was lifted. I think it was good they didn't do that. The distance that tail was supposed to have lifted him was enormous. My main complaint with this movie is how the alien went from facehugger to full grown xenomorph in 15 minutes of the diagetic world of the film. Totally preposterous and defies the laws of physics and biology. Every other movie in the series had the good sense to imply this process happened over several days.

@@NotMorganFreeman. I feel like there's good ways to do callbacks and just give longtime fans nice tidbits to enjoy that the rest of the audience won't get and very bad ways. Mentioning Seegson or having parts of the station resemble Sevastopol Station are tasteful and fun nods to the audience. Having Ian Holm's virtual corpse on strings or characters yell out phrases that are clearly out of character is extremely distasteful. The Ash one in particular really bothered me because for me the implication in the original movie was that Ash was "one of a kind" since you can't really have hidden infiltrator androids if there's 20 of them walking around the office building every day. There was literally no reason for Rook to look like Ash except for the freaking "omg omg look at that!!" reaction they were hoping to get from the audience.

The Xenos were wasted in this movie. Once they show up it's just a speed run of previous movies until we get into the Alien Resurrection ending. It's a shame. One person with a pulse rifle just wipes out the hive.
@Mechasonicrocks2 ай бұрын
@@bjrnhalfhand2258 "One person with a pulse rifle just wipes out the hive" Bro, that's the literal description of what Ripley did during the climax of "Aliens" (with a young girl in tow AND adding a queen and multiple facehugger eggs), and nobody complains about that.
@bjrnhalfhand22582 ай бұрын
@@Mechasonicrocks I suggest you rewatch Aliens. Ripley shoots maybe 2 Xenos and the eggs. It's not the same thing at all.
@Mechasonicrocks2 ай бұрын
@@bjrnhalfhand2258 Then perhaps you should be more specific. Going by how you worded it, It's the same: Ripley is one person, she had a pulse rifle, and she took out the Hive. Now the specifics are what makes the scenario a bit different: Ripley's rifle had an under-mounted grenade launcher, she taped a flamethrower to the rifle, and was also carrying a belt of grenades, plus the area blew up. Context is key.

The crazy thing is we have literally terminator military robots in the Alien universe but NEVER are they used or implemented against alien itself...... likely because alien would lose.

I've been a crazy alien and predator fan since Alien first came out when I was a little kid. I was excited to take my young daughter to see this film and see loved it. I found myself coming out a little disappointed with the Aliens in the film. In the first 3 films, the aliens are almost unstoppable killing machines that stalk their prey almost like lions in the grass. In this film, they build up to the aliens appearing and they are then pretty much all wiped out in seconds by an amateur with a single rifle.......very disappointing how easily and quickly they are dispatched.
@reverbtheraptor85292 ай бұрын
To be fair, A: They were probably "stunned" by being in zero gravity as theres not a whole lot they can do floating about. B. The amateur had a rifle with an aim assist. She's merely just holding the gun and then pulling the trigger when the targeting system locks on. C. They did also go out pretty quickly in some parts of Aliens.
@CM2030A2 ай бұрын
@reverbtheraptor8529 think back to the gang of highly trained marines with smart guns, grenades and all sorts....that ventured into a hive in Aliens. Remember how menacing the whole environment was and how badly they got their arses kicked while trying to withdraw.....there was none of that feeling this time around. Another scene that always sticks in my mind as a kid that shows how lethal they are was a little scene in Alien 3. A bit where they are all chatting away and painting up the tunnels and vents with the flammable liquid to trap it. There's a scene filmed from high up a big vertical air vent looking down on a bloke paint beneath the vent and then for a second, the aliens head comes in to shot as it quietly moves to looks down on its prey like a lion positioning itself quietly in the grassy plains to strike at a deer. The head the moves out of shot and it dissappear to position itself. This for me, was a really good scene that showed just how stealthy, clever and dangerous the aliens are and that they aren't just mindless killing machines.
@bjrnhalfhand22582 ай бұрын
Totally agree. The Xenomorph was wasted in this movie. Once they appear, it's a speed run of Aliens until we get to the Alien Resurrection ending. Almost a hive full of Xenos wiped out in a few minutes by one person with a gun. Wow.

Yes! Not to mention how weak the facehuggers were. As soon as one gets on you is pretty much over, let alone actually latch on to you.

I like how the alternative version gives bjorn a bit more redemption by not being dumb before dying and the single drop of acid onto the heaart is also really cool, maybe a bit difficult to understand for the viewer, the theatrical cut is a bit more obvious with the painful death

Seen Romulus 4 times. The three additional times were intended for analyzing it and my conclusion is, IT SUCKS for Alien fans as a true successor to the franchise for three main reasons. 1) Far too much repeated storytelling from previous films and scenes that removed originality. There are FAR TOO MANY fan boy call outs and it gets weird after awhile (I'm a mega fan of the first two films and I got annoyed with it). 2) The Xenos and facehuggers looked and acted more mechanical than organic. Watch Aliens and see how so much more slimy and slick they are than Romulus. It looked like they tried to innovate from Aliens, but it fell short of that true organic/real feel of how those creatures would interact on screen. the facehuggers were the worst as in Aliens they are so damn good and simple whereas Romulus they kept using more robotics for individual movements and it is VERY noticeable. 3) The ending. Why did they double or tripple down on the same evac out the airlock scenerio as the first two films blended with a hybrid Xeno (Resurrection reattempt?). We have already seen it and it really wasn't warranted by fans to have a creature as such look hardly like a Xeno in the first place and act slow, stupid (Xenos are highly intelligent), and detached from the lore. So If I ever watch Romulus ever again, it is because I'm either paid to do so or it will help me get laid that night. Game over man, Game Over!

Thank you for this informative vid and sharing the deleted scenes with us :) I think sooner or later they will be a direct cut of that movie. There are at least economic reasons for those responsible to do. Surely an “Alien” enthusiast will prevail and I would welcome a directors cut version. Alien Romulus is a very good Alien movie though, right behind the first two legends :)

We've seen Xenomorphs stand down to threats, especially in situations where the numbers aren't in their favor. In Aliens it was Ripley and the Flamethrower as well as the sentry turrets that killed enough bugs for them to fall back and try another way. In the AVP game while playing as the alien you can see the different threat levels of enemies, and again in the AVP films. When the numbers are lower the individual bugs seem to be smarter.

@brandoncarey13742 ай бұрын
I think the reason they didn't go with the Alien backing away from a gun scene was actually due to S.D. Perry's Alien Labyrinth. In that book it is confirmed that Xenomorphs will always attack a threat to their hive regardless of the danger to the drone itself and do so above all other needs. The fact that they included the Plagiarus praepotens from Cold Forge shows that they were very aware of the different novels in the franchise and what they had to offer.

14:05 I think another reason for going with theatrical version of Bjorn's death is that it further sets up the tension in the floating acid scene later. But yeah by itself the alternate version is quite cool.

The movie does already confirm they know that something being pointed at them like a gun is dangerous. After Rain gets to Andy there's Xenomorphs on the wall that move towards her, she points the rifle and they stop in their tracks and hiss at her. Then they slowly follow her, keeping their distance until she is with her back to the wall at the zero gravity scene.

I grew up with Alien series/franchise. I went to the cinema to watch ROmulus. I came back home disappointed. Maybe I am old? Maybe it is because I compare Romulus with previous three parts!? But I was really disappointed. I mean, the first 30 minutes were qute good. Nice introduction. Journey to this abandoned station... But after the first attack of the facehuggers, it became... boring. I mean, it was not so scary. It did not make you frightened. I just did not feel the fear. The atmosphere of being in a constant danger , and Alien running somewhere, waiting for you in the darkness...was none ! Sometimes I think that the scene with Dallas being caught by Alien is better than the whole romulus ?! The adult form of Alien was neglected. We have some scenes, but that is not what we expected ?!

5:00 The mini scare-jump scare is probably a little nod to the scene in Alien when they are looking for the Face Hugger and Scott does a couple of similar bait and switches with the loud bang of Dallas blundering into a table and Ash looking in the corner before an AD drops the puppet on Ripley. (love that moment) In fairness, it's also become a bit of a horror staple/trope

Really good insight, I don't think having another character speared by a xeno tail would be too much as that's there thing in the novels, we really need a directors cut though.
